check engine light on sometimes?

i have been having a problem with my car. when it gets warmed up sometimes the check engine light comes on. it seems to run sluggish when the light comes on. if it comes on and i shut the car off and restart it it sometimes goes out and sometimes stayes on. is ti something to do with the smog pump and air tubes? i deleated the belt to the smog pump but its still on the car. also the cat is gutted out. anyone have any ideas? cars in sig!

I don't think it is smop pump related. Have you checked for codes? I would start with that. It could be an EGR problem but until you check to see what the code is it's kind of hard to tell.

i was also thinking maybe the throtle position sensor may be off some? well my dad has a snap-on scaner and when i hooked it up to the car it tells me it cant communicate with the computer? i have no idea what to do now. it did ti again tonight. you can definitly hear and feel a difference when the light comes on. it runs really sluggish and sometimes doesnt want to idle.

Check the codes with out the scanner. All you need is a paper clip or a small wire.

well there is good news i was reading in my tpi performance book i have at home and i was looking through the descriptions fo the trouble codes and iwas reading on the throtle position sensor. wheni start the car up the check engien light comes on and you can hear its running sluggish so i pulled the connector off the tps and it smoothed right out. i took a tps i had laying in my garage and put it in. it runs good now just needs to be calibrated badly i could barely move the car around after i put the new one in.

my dad who is a mechanic said i should get the car out first and run it out for a while before i do anything else. it has sat for about 3 years and had very minimal driving. like minimal i mean about 4 miles.

Kind of related to your topic, but.......

My car, a '86 Caprice Classic, and engine-wise stock for right now, does the same thing. After about 30 min. of driving, the CEL comes on, but I can't tell a difference. Its a 305 carberauted, and I'm not to worried about it because the previous owner was my grandma, and she pampered the thing and always took it to reputable mechanics and all, and they said that its nothing. Also, its gonna have a crate 350 with TPI and all new wiring, so I'm really not worried about it until I get the swap done.
