i found some of this in the tool room, will it help?

I'm gonna take the battery out and clean this up, use the naval jelly, and then paint the hell out of it with the only paint i got left, my clear engine enamel.

You need to use the Naval jelly on both sides of the rusted panel, then coat the snot out of it with Rust oleum. It is normal for the battery tray to be rusty, the acid drips down and dissolves the paint and the metal. Keep your battery clean after neutralizing the rust.

Good luck

well my plan is to get the rust off, paint it, and then coat it with the left over rhino liner thats in the back room. If not then i'll use some tar.

well after a long exhaustive search through the tool room i found some rustoleum primer just for rusty surfaces. But i think i've got enough tar to finish the surface so this never happens again.

Looks like a stock radiator.. whoopty f'n-doo.

As far as the rust.. the cure would be to remove as much scaled (loose) rust as you can and then treat is with something with a high zinc composition such as ZRC (cold galv compound for treating welded areas of galv metal) or a similar phosphoric acid that leaves a zinc deposit (like Oxisolve). Muratic acid eats rust from metal as well but, w/o proper post treatment, it will stay active and keep rusting the metal even worse. Zinc is the simplest form of combating rust and keeping it at bay. Epoxy sealers of Galvaprime works as well but in all cases, you need to remove the rust to the best extent before treating for maximum efficiency.
Also, Eastwood sells a battery mat to help prevent corrosion from the battery. Something to consider. That or, a sealed battery.

and no, that radiator is twice as thick as the stock radiator. I guess the end isn't but the radiator is. when we first gott he car it was heatup up real quick so we found the biggest radiator that would fit there and it ended up being a little over twice as thick.

Por15... a rust encapsulator.. not eliminator. It's a band-aid fix to problematic rust.

To quote from the Por15 website....

"WHAT IS THE 'PROPER PREPARATION'?
We make a product called 'Metal-Ready'. It's a rust remover that leaves a zinc phosphate coating on base metal, the perfect preprimer for POR-15. NOTE: New steel is coated with a protective oil finish at the mill. This finish must be removed before using POR-15 or Metal-Ready. Clean metal first with POR-15 Marine-Clean, then rinse with water and dry. "

Every comment has been good so far and I agree with all of them. Now for a little humor. I'd take out the battery and put a fur mat in there to cover it up then reinstall the battery. You know i'm just tryin to have some fun right?

The rust dosn't look too bad with a little wire wheel action, naval jelly and rustoleum you should be OK. Have fun brother

well damn, that naval jelly really does the trick. I've only done one treatment and that rust is almost completely gone. Well i've done half of one there is still 5 minutes left before i gotta rinse it off but when i hit it with the brush the rust comes right off. I can tell this will be a very good experience for me. Learning howot remove rust.

Good news also since the battery is out, i am able to see that the entire battery tray is not messed up. the rust is not completely through the metal, yet. So this will extend the life of that tray 10 fold and extend the money i have in my pocket.

If you won't get the battery tray covered in purple fur, you might as well get an Optima or other sealed battery.

putting a thick layer of tar down after it is primered, and that will seal it forever.

well now, i'm sorry but i got cought up in the moment and forgot to take more pics. BUt i laid down two coats of my rusty metal primer. Then i let it dry for 3 hours. Then, i got my tar out and gave it all atleast a 1/8-1/4in of coverage. in some plces half an inch. But all is better now. Instead of waiting the 3 days it says to cure to the touch and 30 to put pressure on, i just covered it all with sheet metal so i;ve gote sheet metal on top, tar in between and then 2 coats of rusty metal primer. I think i got it safe now.

She runs too. Whilei was on my engioen bay project i found the loose vacuum line and now my checkengien light dont coem on. I mean the car performed liek normal but this one vacuum line was on but loose, and that was most likely the problem.
