ShiftyCapone: Way to tell 'em @ Chevy Hi
Chris, I just wanted to say "thanks" for making those boys @ Chevy Hi Perf fess up about how their modded TBI 305 really ran with that aftermarket cam. They apparently forgot to mention how horribly the engine ran, despite the deceiving power numbers. Seems like those guys sometimes get in such a hurry to publish their stories that they don't cover all their bases...good job at calling their bluff.
By the way...I can totally appreciate the difficulties in properly tuning your chip after mods...my 350 H.O./454 TBI combo is still nowhere close to "ideal" after about 15 chip attempts!

Way to go Chris!
its nice to see even the mags agree that after a cam swap it is a 'undrivable mess.' That quote really helps our DIY chip tuning case.

That was an excellent letter there Chris. It could have been written any number of ways and still come across as condecending, but you managed to keep it very nuetral and informative.
If you had written it any other way I'm sure it wouldn't have gotte into the article.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I just had so many questions (most of you probably did to) after thier first series of this build up that I had to say something. Everything that I mentioned in my letter they agreed with. I didn't tell them anything they didn't already know. What I did was try to tell them that they may have some diss-allusioned readers by the way they talked about the cars gains. Although he didn't quote me in the article he did apolozise sorta for the points that I mentioned to him over the phone. It was really cool to talk to them. It was great to see the gains they got with tuning. The only thing i do not know about their swap was what fguel pump they went with. I have a hard time beliveing they used the stock pump but I could be wrong. I sent another email also asking about the legality of this swap since it was a registered cally car. I think it is funny how they used my screen name at the end of the letter. The last question he asked me was what my screen name was and up to that point I had only identified myself by by name.

Good job, Shifty!
Many mag articles are misleading, whether its intended or not.
You can read an article where a certain part is used, go buy the part, and find it takes 2 hours of grinding/fitting to work.
And everything is a "bolt on" part
If you've guys noticed, there are more and more TBI articles and such appearing in a number of mags.
I think they would be amazed at some of the things we do:hail:

Don't I remember them talking to Ed Wright from Fast chips in the first article about that car? Or was that another write up on another car?
Anyway, if it was the same article, Ed was not mentioned in the second part.

I wouldn't take any credit, I got all of my information from other sources also. Grumpy, Rbob, DanW, and a few other come to mind, they are the real hero's in this. They were doing this before I even started modifing my car, which i still don't think is anything all the special (yet). BTW, i am taking donations, to make it special.
, really all I did was talk to a couple of really mechanical savy guys, and the combination of 3 or 4 ideas, worked itself into a project. DanW suggested the manifold, Chevymad (local to me, VERY smart guy) confirmed that idea, nad also helped me with SO much of parts selection. Then there are the dozens of folks who helped me along when I started tuning, Although i learned alot myself, sometimes by trial and error. There is no resource like the DIY-Prom board. We are SO lucky to have this information available to us so freely. I also own and Audi, and the computer work on those cars is so far behind what is being done with the GM ECMs. I really wish more people were willing to try it, there are not alot of other places where you would ever get a chance to access that kind of expertise for free, then you can get the equipment for under $200. I really cannot understand why anyone drags their feet, and doesn't want to get into chip tuning.
I also remeber when the whole single plane idea got rehashed on here about a year ago, it wasn't new, there were several folks who posted that had run similar combo's a decade earlier. But i am excited to see so much interest in TBI right now, the more people who get onboard, and start trying new things, the more good info will come out for everyone to use. It also looks like we might get the some real inovation for the computer system here shortly, with the work on the SpeedReader, and Rbob's source code. I am really look forward to seeing the project completed. That peice will really make convincing people to tune more appealing, with all the added function, and the new found ease of tuning.
I just hope that CHP, GMHTP, ect will continue to show TBI build-ups. I would love to see one of the TGO TBI cars featured at some point. There is a lot of hard work, and a lot of inovation that has happened with these cars, i really wish one of these mags would show it. Seeing a low 13sec TBI car in a magizine, might just light the fire for so many of hte TBI owners, who don't think there is any potential in their car.

i'm still waiting for your "tbi tuning for dummies" guide!
i just sold my s/r torquer 305 heads and am getting ready to sell my ported zz4 heads. after i do so, i've got a line on a set of pro-topline vortecs that the guy will sell to me, milled .036 for compression for 579.00!
by the way, there are a number of places to buy the gmpp vortec tbi egr intake (pn 12496821) for less than the 345.00 at sdpc2000.com.
jegs.com has it for 329.99
sallee-chevrolet.com has it for 305.00
and best of all, gmpartsdirect.com has it for 288.46! that's more than 60 bucks cheaper than scroggins-dickey!
also, two in the past week went for just over 200.00 each on another site, but there's a secret to finding them and i'm not going to let the rest of you in on it till i get mine.
