Fiebrid Factory Sub Amp location
Fiebrid Factory Sub Amp location
I am heading out to a junkyard, and there was a GTA there that had the factory sub woofer option (i already grabbed the Performanmce Sound radio trim plate) and i am going to be grabbing the subs and wanted to know where the amp was located? i'm sure i could find it but it's been cold here latley and didn't want to spend too much time.
Thanks
Thanks
The subs were located in where the 6x9's would have gone.
Here's a pic of all the equipment, the sub boxes, amplifier, Perfomance Sound radio trim plate, and the gain switch for the dash.

I pulled a set pf the speakers/enclosures from a Camaro here in Seattle but couldn't locate the amp or gain switch. Don't know if they were factory for that car.

Found a nice sub woofer set up today at the junkyard in a firebird.I got the subs, amp, and gain switch. The radio and trim plate had already been removed. That is the second set up like this i have seen. The first was in an 86 Trans Am.They seem to be a rare find.

My SECOND 87 Formula, has the option, but I do not think it works, as when I tried to use it when I bought it I did nit hear any difference...
I probably should have the amp re-built.
My first Formula has the gain switch, just because I never liked the blank filler plate, same thing goes for the fog light switch for the T/A's I got that too, because I did not like looking at the plate.

They are supposed to be 5 1/4 inch subwoofers. I guess the guy before me took them out. My car now has 6X9's back there. But it still has the gain control and the amp.

The enclosure fits in place of the factory 6 X 9. It houses a 5 1/4 sub and a 4 X 6 just like what's in the dash. I replaced the 5 1/4 speakers with some Bose units and replaced the 4 X 6's with some Cerwin Vega 3 ways. Ahhhh! music to my ears. The plastic enclosure is really designed and tuned well. It just needs better speakers than what came stock.

Does it still have the radio plate with the performance sound emblem on it? If it does, I would be interested in that, as I bought the setup from the dealer years ago.

sail panels are the same, you have to take the original fiber boxes out to replace with the plastic ones and they screw into the original 6x9 mounting holes.

Back in the day, pretty good for factory. Realize that if GM decided to put in a kick butt system in a car they could do it. Unfortunately if someone lost their hearing from a factory system being too loud they would brobably be sued.
The factory systems sounded pretty good when new and with the correct equipment. Unfortunately most cars the factory stero stuff is gone and no one has a real system as it was back when it was new. With that said, no one will ever know what they really sounded like new.
I have a friend that bought his 86T/A new and still has it. It had the "Performance sound" option. Unfortunately the car has been stolen 3 times, one time they took the original radio, and GM could not replace the original stereo because it was no longer made. He claims it sounded great with the original setup now it just sucks with the wrong radio.
Keep in mind that a good soudning system can be had with 5" subs. I had one and it was great, Two 5" KKicker sub stations, powered by a little 250 Watt Amp. Not really loud where I would rattle the windows in my house but it sounded clean and it was pleasant.
