Does this mean that if you are issued a front plate before Nov1, you have to use it until you register again?

ARTICLE 9. REDUCTION IN NUMBER OF LICENSE PLATES ISSUED
SECTION 9.01. Subchapter A, Chapter 502, Transportation
Code, is amended by adding Section 502.010 to read as follows:
Sec. 502.010. ISSUANCE AND DISPLAY OF LICENSE PLATE. (a)
Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary, including
Section 502.180, the department shall issue only one license plate
for attachment at the rear of the vehicle for which the plate is
issued.
(b) Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary,
including Section 502.404(a), a person is entitled to operate on a
public highway a vehicle that displays only one license plate if the
plate is attached at the rear of the vehicle. A person may operate
on a public highway a vehicle that displays two license plates if
both plates were assigned by the department for the registration
period as a set of plates.
(c) In any provision of this code that relates to the
issuance or display of "license plates," "plates," or a "set of
plates," the term means only one license plate.

SECTION 9.03. This article takes effect November 1, 2005.

 

From what you quoted, it seems that: after Nov 1, if they have two plates and want to display both, that's fine. If they only want to show one plate on the back, that's fine too.

 

That's the drift that I got............

 

Well, I guess this is typical.

The Engrossed (?) version says November 1.

The House Committee Report version says September 1.

And $95.00 would be a hard hit on my pocket too. But all the $95.00 tickets didn't tally as much as the additional cost of making two plates vs one. I guess the cost of prison labor has gone up.

 

Hell Yeah--They gota pay for the Air Conditioning--Color TV's--And all the stuff that the bleeding heart Liberals think that prisoners deserve--BUT THEY DON'T! Jail is supposed to be punishment--NOT A COUNTRY CLUB!

Well, TxDOT hardly ever has to issue new plates when reregistering a vehicle because the current plates last so long. I guess we're dealing with the issuance of plates for a registration period beginning on or after the date of the new law, so if my current plates happen to get run over by a bulldozer while I was repainting the bumpers, I guess they'll have to issue me new plates, or, I mean, a new plate.

a friend of mine is going to be even more pissed, as he got a ticket last week for no front tag.

 

the 2 times an officer asked about the front plate I just said I had replaced the front grill and was waiting for the correct bracket to come in. wasn't far from the truth either, it'd just been 4 years since I replaced the front grill

If it applied to govt they would say "the department" instead of "person".... And if you already have a PAIR of plates you CAN NOT take one off... You have to go and get a new tag that it only issued as a SINGLE tag or "plate"... Dont let these lawmakers confuse you on this so you screw up and they still get you... You cant just take off your front one.

 

Notice the underlined word. That leads me to believe that we are not forced to use both plates even though we were issued two of them. Am I reading this wrong?

Yeah, I asked about it too when I got plates recently for my sons car and they gave me two. They said that two plates are still required and you can get a fine for it.

 

It never passed. Got shot down because so much other crap was tacked onto the bill. politicians

 

what is odd, is that they are still deliberating on it... They realize that they will be making twice as much money on license plates after they pass the bill. I am not sure what the holdup is.
