I would like to put mine on the upper flat part of the hatch, but didn't know if I would hit the gas tank if I drilled through. any suggestions for the bust flow and position? post pics if you got um.

That's a good question. HAS anyone mounted it on the top part of the trunk? Drilling though shouldn't hit the gas tank with a small screw...I wouldn't think so.

I have seen many mounted on the upper level hatch floor.
Yes you do have to use caution not to drill into the gas tank or the fuel lines if you mount anything to the upper level of the hatch area floor. I know of a guy that drilled right into the gas tank trying to mount an amplifier there in a TA.

Nope... it won't hit. I saw a guy here in jersey at Atco runnin that setup. I made a platform out of plywood to fit that little hump on either side and radiused the corners...it fits perfect and looks trick. No need to drill holes in the body... I hate hackin things up. I didn't cut any holes in the body for the nos stuff not even the supply line. Later Derrick

 

When I had nitrous, I had my bottle mounted in the following manner:

I fabricated a 1/8-inch steel plate which the two bottle brackets bolt to. I removed the passenger side rear seat cushion, drilled two holes in the seat bracket, and bolted the steel plate to the bracket. The blowdown tube vented through a hole in the floor pan to under the car. The beauty of this location is that I could reach around to the bottle from the driver's seat and turn the valve on or off. I could also turn around and see the nitrous pressure gauge. Any other location and this would be impossible. With the bottle out of the car and the seat cushion back in place, all mounting holes are unseen. I can't think of a better location.

Great suggestions. I'm thinking about mounting it to the back of the fold down rear passenger seat. I keep it foded down most of the time anyway, and I'm going to use winged bolts, so I can yank it with no troube at all, fold the seat up, and no unsightly holes.

Hey willie, did you say that msd adjustable timing modulator pluged right into stock ignition? My contacts are saying you have to have MSD ignition module to use it. Any input???

 

l mounted mine in the hatch, not on the top part but the bottom deeper in, its in my opinion the best spot, hecubus has a good spot too, very original, easy access, and l dont think someones going to try to steal it, but at the track do they let you run without a safety blow down tube? the bottom of the hatch can easily conceal a bottle under a blanket, and instead of buying one of those expensive NOS bottle blankets , it's easy to stuff a big sleeping bag over the bottle and keep it at a constant temperature even in the dead of winter. Its a safe place to drill holes, and it keeps it out of the sun in the hot summer.

 

The module I use (MSD #8683) is made for the GM HEI and not to be used with any MSD ignition box. The installation instructions state, "The PN 8683 timing control is designed to easily install to GM vehicles that are equipped with an external coil and the small cap electronic distributor."

There are two plug-in connectors at the distributor. One has four wires, the other has two. On the four-wire connector, two of the wires are cut (can't recall which two offhand). The MSD module has four wires. Each factory wire end (4), is connected to the four MSD wires.

I put mine behind the driver's seat, but am thinking about moving it to the passenger side for easier access while sitting. I have also added a braided blowdown line with 90* and bulkhead fitting for a clean install. The metal mount for the seat cushion makes a nice base for the bottle (just reverse the bottle mount for the correct angle).

I've got my fuel pressure guage hooked up, and some of the hardware mounted. All that's left is to run the lines and tap my throttle body.

take out the back seats and throw it in just like the one pictured except behind pass. seat. Then you can look over at the guy youre racing, stick your arm behind you seat and turn the bottle on, flip the switch, and see the look of IMMINANT A S S beating wash over his face.

Did you guys pass Tech with the bottle mounted behind the seats like that? I want to do mine that way.

 

Quick and easy

 

If you only spray on the track I'd put it in the spare tire spot, or on the other side, so it's out of the way and no one can see it. If you juice on the street you can put it in the back seat, or you can get electric solenoid valves to turn it on/off if it's hidden and use pillar mounted pressure gauges to keep track of it.

 

This may not help you any, but it is the sneakiest install I've even heard of (beenm using this for 9 years now):

I ran an entra long line from the motor to the hatch area (20 feet or so), drilling through the rear well for the line. I put the line in the channel (between the top trunk and plastic panels) so you can't see it. I then mounted the nitrous bottle on a piece of thin plywood large enough to hold the brackets - slightly smaller than the bottle. Then I bought a large Nike duffel bag (Glow orange and put it in there with a few towels (to keep it from looking obvious). i topped it off with a weightlifting belt around the bag. Not one person ever guessed that there is a nitrous bottle in there.

In order to get at it, I put the bag in a position (with the bag open just enough) where I could reach behind the seat with my left hand and turn on the bottle without turning around/stopping.

I also ran the lines under the car in a way you cannot see them (and painted them black). Same thing under the hood, except that it is right in front of you and nobody ever noticed the solenoids either.

Don't put it in the top part of the hatch, it blocks your view and gets heated by the sun (bad in summer, good in winter).

 

im thinkin of puttin my bottle where Hecubus has his. the only problem with my bottle is that its a 15lb bottle and its the older style bottle (long and blue even though all the bottles are blue from nos) and in my case im going to have to remove the whole entire back seat. like the fold down part and since no one rides back there the passenger seats too.

true ya got me there. i keep on forgettin that the sniper kit is from NOS. i havent really seen people with that kit. either people have the NX kit or the Nos kit

put mine in the hump between the two back seats. also makes a good armrest for anyone in the back (if they can fit back there!). i just used some self tapping sheet metal screws ,and it holds the brackets on there perfectly.

The screws I used were not near long enough to get to the dirve shaft. I don't know about the rust though, I live in Arizona so I never have to worry about rust.

If you use nitrous on the street and you don't want to spend the $ on a remote valve opener, etc. the place in between the back seats looks like the best to me. Is there any good way to cover it there though? Sure, it looks cool, and it's handy, until you get pulled over. How can you explain a big blue bottle with the letters NOS on it when Mr. Policeman is asking for your license, registration, and proof of insurance? Even dumb cops have seen The Fast and The Furious!

hey Desert86Roc how did u hook the braided line up to the bottle like that in the 1st arrow? also how did u hook the cap backup to the blow off cap? im just curious so when i get my bottle refilled i can have a new blow off cap put in.

how gay is that? I saw that nebraska was trying to do that too. They were going to make you wear a scarlet letter a big red "N" on both ends of your car to embarass you and to "warn other drivers that you were some kind of "suicidal freak". Unfortunately they realized that most cars in nebraska already have big red "N" all over the cars and trucks for the gay colledge team. I fail to understand how some governments could see that nitrous or a certain kind of gun, or schools could say a certain type of dress is illegal or offensive. it leads to laws and rules that are "feel good"

 

Most states have a DOT regulation about having gas cylinders in them.. They must be placarded with the nonflammable n2o sign..

But, there are stipulations.. ie: amount of gas, reactions of gas, and the way it's being transported.


In florida, to get around the DOT standards, the bottle has to be hooked up.

There are two laws in the books about nitrous oxide. (in florida)

One is for controlled substances nitrous.. Which is not nitrous sulfur dioxide or whatever Auto Nitrous is. They are referring to medical grade n2o.


Second is about the placarding on vehicles. This is only meant for vehicles that are transporting it, if it is hooked up; you are exempt.

 

Unless that's strictly a local thing, that's not entirely right. Basically hazmat laws for N2O don't apply till you go over 50 or 200# depending on the container and where

 

Like I said, that is only my experience with Florida.

I have no clue about other states.

Mounted mine in the spare tire well. Put the cover on and you wouldn't even know it was there. Also have a remote open solnoid on the bottle with the control sw. mounted on the side of the shifter panel.

Having had both the spare area....


and Between the back Seats....unless extreme stealth is more important then accessablity then I recomend here, SOOO much easier to get to on or off.
Double check in the burn out box, how many times have you heard or seen someone not turning on the bottle, fouling the run/race

-plus it does shorten the distance traveled. That does keep pressure better, hince more power, sooner, minor but another plus
