Swaping LT1 93 ---->SECOND PART

You can get a set of headman headers for 89$ and they will work for sure.I don't think it's possible to install the engine with the headers bolted on it.(that might be your prob, I don't know) I waiting for my painless wiring now ...I'm taking a week vacation and I'll try to swap in 3-4 days..and then, tunning ...

Texas lt1, can you tell me what you used for your coolant rad hoses , thanks

The problem with the hedman is that the smog pump connection on the pass side is to short. To use them would mean I would have to have someone extend that pipe. The real problem is I have spent more money than I had planned and everytime I turn around I spend more. I want some of it back This was fun until it started cutting into my beer budget!

I have heard lots of good stuff about Painless Wiring.... I have not given up on building my own harness yet - When I give up I may go with Painless.

TexasLT1, I can use some help selecting fuel lines and connectors. Thanks.

alright guys, I got the smog-less Hedmans and bolted them up while the engine was out. for the most part, it dropped right in. the only problem was that the collector flange on the drivers side wanted to hit the lip on the backside of the crossmember where the two halves of the framing are mated. I simple took the grinder to this area and ground down just a slight amount off the ridge and it dropped right down.

matt-Im pretty sure that for the radiator hoses we just got some generic hose from NAPA and cut it too the right length

multi-if I would hav gotten on here about an hour sooner I could have asked my dad about the fuel lines and powersteering lines, he found the fittings that we used and he just left for town. I can tell you that the ps line is made up of the original tubing that makes the loop, and a fitting called a Swedge-Loc. as far as the fuel lines, the engine came with the plastic lines still attached, and they were long enough that they reached almost to the stock fuel lines. to mate them, we got this fitting that tapers down to a small point and has circular ridges around its outside. we just pushed the plastic lines on to the fitting and heated the lines with a heat gun and now you would have to cut the plastic to get them off. if that isnt enough info, my dad will be back on Tuesday and I'll ask him then

TexasLT1… I am in no hurry. I can wait for you to ask him. I don't want this part of the swap to be like the motor mounts…. I think MY V6 has a different cross-member than that of a V8. The nice people that I brought my engine from cut just about everything…. I have replaced a lot of stuff… If the engine has not been so clean looking I would have given it back….

Mat89RS…. I am in Louisiana. There are as far as I can tell no emission laws here… They do check to ensure that your brake lights work. The problem I have with emission is that I will be leaving this location soon and I am not sure where I am going to end-up. So, I decided to keep the emissions stuff.

Cost:……Boy Oh Boy…. In every instance when it came time to buy something I decided to buy new.

Engine and Transmission: More than it's worth
Tools: ~$100.00
Sensors and connectors: ~$200.00 -- Did not want any old sensor and if the connector looked funky I replace it also.
Motor Mounts(Attached to engine) ~$50.00 --
Motor Mounts(Attached to cross member): Cheap, but can't find receipt
Spark Plug: ~$15.00 (I can change the plugs easily, the wires are another thing!)
Spark Plug Wires: ~$75.00
Heat wrap for Spark Plug Wires: Can't find receipt
LT1 Radiator and Hoses:~$170.00
Dual Fans Setup:~$150.00
Custom made A/C Lines:~$100.00
A/C Exit Stuff:~$22.00
VATS Decoder Module:~$150.00

To be done:

Fuel and PS lines.

Deals:

Traded my V6 and tranny for some nice size 16 wheels and tires… I will keep my stock size 15 wheels and swap when the mood hits me.

Traded my R12 for A/C work. Fellow is going to ensure the system is functional, charged and does not leak. Yea, he got the best end of that deal…

Just have not decided yet:

Optispark -- Will not decide if I am going to replace it until engine is up and running.

Luckly I am an engineer and not a business person… Company would go broke with me making decisions.

I dropped the project when I was building the trottle cable. myself I was making one with the tbi cable pretty hard when you start cutting it. I made a little bracket from aluminium that was holding on the fuel rail bolt, and then took a bicycle brake cable and linked it with the old one (pretty crappy but it would work).I couldn't buy one because it was sunday at the time and everything was closed, custom fab was the deal .

you can simply go at gm dealer or good part store and buy a lt1 trottle cable and use it or you may even go get tpi cable , it will work fine.

Well I think I am on the down-hill slide now. I am not going to buy a wiring harness. Its a slow and painful process but I am sure I can make the wiring thing work. 4th gen seats...Never paid attention. I do like the dash...If I thought it would fit..I would make the change...

Did you order a Vehicle Speed Sensor when you ordered your harness?

TexasLT1, did you need a VSS?

Just wondering

multi- sorry about taking so long, Ive been busy and havent had a chance to get on the net. I talked to my dad about the fittings, for the fuel lines we used barb fittings with a 1/4" NPT thread tubing fitting, and the power steering lines we used Swedge-Loc. we used the 95 high pressure p/s line, cut up the original p/s tubing, used hose clamps to attach the two, then used the swedge-loc to connect the two pieces of tubing. I can definately get you a pic if you need it

TexasLT1, as I am sure you are aware I do not know what I am doing... A picture would be helpful. What is a swedge-loc or who makes it... OK this may be a dumb question but what size was the fitting of the barb fitting?

90+ camaro's has a VSS, 87+ Firebirds have VSS.

Edit: OK I see what you mean. VSS = vehicle speed sensor. MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor. 94 and up have MAF, but he's wants to know about the VSS(in the tranny).

Keith5 welcome to my world! The problem is I have a mechnical speedo and no way to connect it to my 4L60 (700R4) tranny.
The way I see it I have three choices:

1. Buy something that translates the electronic pulses to mechnical turns(?)(cost is not bad)

2. Buy a electronic speedo. (expensive and won't be happening)

3. Live without a speedo. (no cost until I do 35 in a 25.

Street & performance makes a tailend housing kit that lets you add a manual speedO to a 4l60e. maybe it would work on a 4l60 or maybe they make a kit for your app.

You should be able to just swap out a cable driven setup into the 4L60 not sure about the 4L60E.

I don't know what you should do about the speedo. Camaros were supposed to get electic speedos in '90, did the dash change in 90 or 91? Maybe you could use stock electric speedo or something.

I would say just take out the VSS and use the cable setup, but I'm not sure what the LT1 computer would think about that. You'd have to do something about the converter lockup and it might throw a code or something.

Multi, do this , it works:

remove the 4 bolt on ther tail of the hold and also the new one

exchange the tail, but change the plastic gear because it's not the same, and it will work just fine .

By the way, I'm currently swapping guys, so far it's good, I've removed the engine and I'll be installing the engine tomorow. it took me 6 hours so far .

Thanks UnderDogRS and Keith5! I think the first thing I will investigate is the 90-92 model Camaro. I would like to use electronic speedo and if one of those model years had one and it will fit I will.

The VSS from JTR or painless will be my second option.

Option three will be to put a kit on the tranny.

I think the computer will receive its signal… It is wired directly into the tranny. The tranny section of the Helms is very complicated (at least it makes my head hurt).

Well I guess this swap is taking longer than I had planned. Some of my labels have fallen off. What is the black, round (1-2 inch in dia), about 5-6 inches long with the brown wire running to it. It is on the driver side near the tranny. It has a opening and looks like something plugs in like a cable or something.

thanks

Well so far it's going great, tommorow I'll be changing the fuel pump and dropping the rear-end , and I'll be starting the electronic. I had two small problems today, I was trying the drop the engine and the right side header was not fitting , I had to remove it, now the other problem is that the left side header is touching the heather core return line.I'll relocate it. hing else is working fine

multi too bad you exchanged that tranny , would ove been really helpfull

I've used 3rd gen rad, I used the waterneck from the 305 and I've found a rad hose from a g-body that fit perfectly, everything else works just fine.

I'll try to get pictures for things that are hard to figure out .

Also my power sterring line are made now with the old flex and 2 fittings that I bought at Canadian Tire. the power sterring line passes under the actual engine.

I'm in the process of building my fuel feed and return lines. I want to make something nice so I'll buy more fittings and metal lines (just the same as power sterring).

I didn't find an air intake that works with the engine . I'll probably use one from a 2.8 camaro. (it's been sitting in my garage from 2 years, why not use it)

I'm thinking about buying 3.73 gears and posi unit because I'll drop the rear-end tonight or tommorow and it's lot easier to do it while it's not on the car . not sure ... will see.

The plan is to come up with technical articles that we can post on this site. As far as archiving I think(hope) that automatic. I am also saving it to my hard drive.

I am using a 4rd Gen radiator. Not sure if its going to work or not. Have not put it in yet! With my luck it won't!

However we do it we need to write in-depth tech pages....I have spent more time searching for information than I have working on my car. I know that as a collective we can turn out some good stuff that will benefit folks like us that love our cars. I think posting on this site is a great solution and maybe cross-post elsewhere...As a collective we can lighten the next person that want to do this load.

Mat89RS is correct., we need a plan of how we are going to approach this and what our end product will be... That chat program maybe a way to get us started...

I think Mat89RS should do electronic!

Hi I posted a question in Electronic concerning --of course--an Electronic Speedo in a thirdgen... 90+ cars have electronic speedo... We should be able to swap our mech ones for electronic ones...

I don't know depends on the wheels, but since you don't need a v6 tranny I'd say you did.

On the speedo thing. I'm not sure a 90+ speedo will work in an older car's dash without mods. I know 91-92 dashes are different, 90's may not be. I guess after putting an LT1 in a 3rd gen, making a speedo fit would be trivial.

How right was I? Will it cause you to loose your lockup and throw a code? I guess you can put the lockup on a manual switch or use one of those vacuum operated switches out of jegs or something for lockup. Maybe the computer can be reprogrammed to not care about the VSS.
