Cool, good luck, Dave! Make sure you have the right tools- that's the best shortcut I know of. See my message at:

Buy a breaker bar, a 1/2-inch-drive extension that's long enough to reach from the front of the trans to the back, and a 1/2-inch-drive 18mm socket. That'll take care of the trans-to-engine bolts. Avoid the thin 3/8-inch-drive (socket set) tools. Also buy a torque wrench if you don't have one.
I followed the directions in the Haynes 82-92 Camaro (or Firebird) manual. They're the same as in the GM Service Manual, and they don't leave anything out.
The most important tip of all: Make sure you seat the new torque convertor in the new transmission FULLY! Some guys mess that up- and then they need a new torque convertor and new trans-input-shaft.
Here's how to tell the TC is seated fully. When the new trans is back up and mated to the engine, thread two "trans-to-engine" bellhousing bolts in. Next, check the distance between the flywheel and the torque convertor. The two should NOT be mashed against each other! If the TC is seated fully, you should be able to slide it back and forth, along the trans input shaft, a few inches.
If the torque convertor is TIGHT against the flywheel, it's not seated all the way!! Drop the trans down, and spin the TC until it seats. This is a pain, here's why- our lockup torque convertors have two sets of splines to engage. If you only engage the first (easiest) set, the TC won't be able to slide all the way into the trans. You should actually be able to ram the TC all the way back into the trans's fluid pump so the TC hits the tranny bellhousing. If you start the car and the TC isn't fully seated, everything gets ripped up.
Oh- before you seat the TC onto the trans, lay it down on the ground with the opening up. Pour two quarts s-l-o-w-l-y into the center opening of the new torque convertor.

Altho one of my "life plans" is to see a California sunset.

Well, I'm in Va. Right smack in the middle between Richmond and Washington, D.C. I could check with my cousin to see when his annual car show's gonna be this year (it was up to 175 cars last year
), if you'd like a suggestion on when to take your vacation.
