Where's the best place to get a custom chip?
I've done the mods in my sig and it's time for a custom chip as the stock one is just holding me back.
Where's the best place to get a custom chip from? I heard of one guy a while back but can't remember his name, web page etc. I've also heard to stay away from TPIS.
Your suggestions are appreciated.

You'll never find a better PROM than one you burn yourself for your specific and unique application.

thats what Kevin Crain does, custom chips. he fits them to YOUR app, not a general area of people.

Well, having someone make a PROM for you when they don't have access to raw data from the car is not any better than having an off-the-shelf PROM in your ECM (ie. hypertech, ADS, etc...). You simply cannot tune a car's PROM without having the car there to monitor, and take readings from, before and after a change is made in the PROM. And the process will take far too many iterations of the bin to get it right to be viable for the person doing this 'custom' PROM. Having Ed Wright or Kevin Crain or someone like those guys make you a PROM will probably (and I use that loosely) get you a better running setup than the stock PROM, but it most certainly won't get all of the power out of your application and likely won't come close to ironing out all of the little driveability and fuel economy qwirks...
So you might say that these people will work with you and get it right..... Well I have burned upwords of 50 iterations of my bin so far, and I know for certain that there is more power and smoother driveability there for the finding. How many times are these guys going to work with you and re-burn your PROM? Who's paying for the shipping on this? How about the new PROM each time, or are you sending yours back and forth? See where I am coming from?
A word about the term 'custom' : I make a lot of the changes that I make to my PROM bin because I want this thing this way or that - not because there is some rule out there that says "If part X and part Y is used, change figure Alpha to 144 and figure Bravo to 255"...... It just is not that simple.... The thing to remember is that every setup and situation is unique and there is simply no way around it.
The great thing is, is that there are people out there willing to help people learn how to burn their own PROMs..... And they will help you for free!!! There are many places to get advice on PROM tuning and one of the (if not the ) best places happens to be right here on this site. The DIY PROM board has many many members that are well versed in PROM tuning and will help you out every step of the way for free..... All you have to do is ask! (I do encourage you to read the PROM tuning article written by Traxion before posting a question about the basics, as his article will answer most beginner level questions on what to buy and where to start).
Hope that helps!!

iagree on your point there MattGTA, if you have someone with diacom and someone htat is out of state such as Kevin Crain, having dia com is the key link. if you dont have dia com ordering a chip without your cars specs is a waste of time.

ok just to let you know what the heck I am talking about by a haltech
I have a link for the demo to see what it is like
it is not software to burn a PROM or anything like that
this is a whole computer setup
used a lot in racing cars
this thing is sweet as hell
here is the link
http://rx7speed.homestead.com/files/e6kDemo.zip
should only be 600-700k
all it is though is the software that will controll the computer
but you get the software and the computer all in one

I have heard of the Haltech systems often. People seem to like it until they find out how much it is to deploy. I remember someone telling me a much higher price than $600 to $700 that you state.... But even at that price, it is not anywhere near as economical as burning your own PROMs.

I know they are a little spendy
and if you are going for a non-spendy way then yes they are not the way to go
if you want something that will allow you to tune ANYTHING on your car as well as let you datalog ANYTHING and for the most part have full control over the motor even while it runs and able to tune it at a moments notice then this is the way to go

Firstly, thnks to everyone that has replied.
rx7speed,
I looked at the Haltch. It is indeed very impressive and I think it would be great, but the price over what I'm wanting to pay. It looks to be a great system though.
Matt87GTA,
Ok, so I think you've talked me into buying the stuff so I can burn my own PROMS. I'll have a read through Traxions article again and start making a list of what I'll need...appart from help from here
I'll keep you posted
