look very closely at this pic, it IS adjustable for 153 and 168 tooth flywheels, so you are right there, thats why it has 4 holes. now show me where the bolt hole for the old style blocks is at?
there isnt one, meaning id have to drill my block to use that starter because ALL of those bolt holes are inline.
sprojam, the problem here isnt the starter, its the block, and my limits of what i can do since i have a small bellhousing and a 153 tooth flywheel. i dont think any of these guys are idiots, theyve actually been very helpful
sofa, sonix,
i found the tools at wholesale tool (6 bucks apeice for the bits!) and i bought a 8 inch piece of 3/8 brake line. which had a inside diameter of 5/16 and can be had at any parts store (mine delivered my piece to work!)
i bolted the starter in place and used a straitedge to check the gaps behind each side of the starter in reference to the bellhousing. I drilled 3/8 down with a 3/8 bit, then put the brakeline over the 5/16 bit, and went to town. the hole does look a tad off compared to the other one, but im not sure if thats because the casting on the other bolt hole is different than the other block i measured in the back of my truck. ran the tap through it, bolted it up, and re checked the gaps with my straitedge, which were the same still.
it all bolts in fine no binding whatsoever. i hope this works, or ill just put a automatic back in it and hope for next spring

You'll also find that the mini-starter and all that, will fit and work perfect when your T-5 grinds itself up into dust, and you get a T-56. Which is what I ended up doing; I have about a 96 or 97 T-56 in my car now, with the same mini-starter.
Glad you were able to find all the tools and all locally, and get it done. Believe me, you're not the first to end up in this situation, and you surely won't be the last! People just about always find out about it the way you did: motor is in, everything is hooked up, they're laying on their back trying to bolt up their starter, and OOOPS.... what do I do now???
I seriously doubt that you'll find the stock starter satisfactory. Mine wouldn't turn over my 400 more than about 3 or 4 revolutions before it got tired. I got stuck in parking lots on a regular basis, waiting on the motor to cool down to where the starter would spin it (no, it wasn't "heat soak", whatever that would be if it actually existed). I went through more starters and batteries than I care to remember, trying to get it to where it would start hot, especially (the starter couldn't overcome a cyl that fired BTDC); the mini-starter TOTALLY eliminated that. It whirls my 400 over about twice as fast as the stock POS would even spin the original 305.
Enjoy!!!

Just a little FYI, GM used a staggered bolt gear drive starter used with a 153 tooth flexplate/flywheel on alot of the Vortec 4.3 S10 trucks.
IIRC, the Autozone Part number is DL9997S
