Pick-N-Pull

So while I was in there today, getting a trunk latch for my mother-in-law's Saturn, I scored an old Edelbrock Performer 2101 intake manifold. Took me 20 minutes to pull it. I got up to the sales counter, the old price boards were nowhere to be found, so they ring it up. $58! I'm like: "That's maybe $5 scrap value, I'll give you $20, that's a guaranteed $14 profit after tax, right now." The unintelligent people said they'd wait for another customer to want it. I pointed out that the truck I pulled it from was at that very moment on the forklift being carried to the crusher, and if they wouldn't sell it to me, then they owed me $5 for pulling it. No dice.
Good thing for them that they don't try to charge half what a new L31 costs, they'd be out of business 1 second later.
Anyway, I won't be going back there again, I know another yard that's willing to negotiate prices.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

Something noone else wanted enough to remove, any profit at all off it would have been better than scrap value. Plus being the previous design of 2101, not the current ( still outdated ) design, it's no better than the current Chinese offerings Summit sells for $120.
Some stuff may bring half, but this was stupidity on their part. They got too greedy and got $5 for something I offered them $ 20 for.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

Pick-N-Pull is only a deal anymore on half price days. However, all the prices are posted on their website (HiPo intake - 51.99 + 4.99 core) and their inventory is mostly up to date on Row52.com. At least you know what you are getting, unlike some yards.

Story from a local yard; they posted a 1994 Firebird on Craigslist for parts. Showed up, they told me what row it was in... went looking, and nothing. Searched the entire yard, nothing. Found it at the bottom of the crushed pile. Go in and ask and the lady at the counter says, sorry, sometimes the owner comes in and just crushes some cars and doesn't tell us. Ok, fine, how much is a door, 80 bucks, for everything. Works for me, go pull the door off of a 91 Camaro RS 3.1L that I had pulled a bunch of good parts from a couple weeks ago. Take it in and the counter lady says, oh, prices for that car are double since it was the owners car. I told her there was no way I was paying 160 dollars for a door. She attempted to call the owner to see if he would budge, couldn't get him on the phone so she sold them to me at normal price.

I've never been jerked around like that at Pick-N-Pull and it's why PnP continues to get my business.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

Yeah, last year when I was building an FB RX-7, I found a yard that had 3. I bought a few things, posted about it, went back months later, found the FB's had been heavily raided, the guy charged me for a whole door when I only needed the window. I pointed out that there were 2 more back there, he answered that those cars were suddenly in high demand. I asked him why he thought that was, and I could stop it as suddenly as I started it. He wouldn't budge, so I smashed the window on my way out. Posted about it. Every single person who had been commenting in my build threads PM'ed me promising to stop using him. He bit the hand that fed him.

Same reason parts store have core charges. They get sent in bulk to places that remanufacture them and sell them to the parts stores.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

That's true for alternators and starters, but for things like engine blocks, it's just to get back the scrap value ( several times over )

My favorite yard is 40 miles out, but they'll negotiate prices. I got my Explorer axle there, for about $ 25 less than PNP, with the rare 3.08:1 ratio I wanted.

You really have to go to PnP during their half price sales. Most of the time it's a holiday weekend. Used to be Thanksgiving and Memorial Day weekend, but they've added more. Paid around $120 OTD for my Explorer axle, brakes and core charge included. Yes, you have to plan ahead, however it's a great time to pick up project type parts that you'll need in the future. Last time I picked up a couple wiring harnesses, complete, for around $20 each in planning for a 0411 ECM swap and a "modernized" underhood harness.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

core charges- its a racket. they know that half the people are not going to keep up with their receipt, pull off their old part, and return it within the allotted time frame. the ones that do return the cores will possibly go back into the yard for more stuff while they are there, and the core itself gets sold as scrap or to a reman outfit. its a win win win win for them.

1/2 off days- my experience is they will break everything down to a much more basic level on those days than normal. for instance, you no longer have a bumper. that is now a bumper subframe, bumper support, bumper cover, L fog light, R fog light, L signal lens, R signal lens. so it pretty much equals out to a normal price if you were to buy that bumper assembly on a normal day.

just my experiences.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

If I see something of value to me that takes more than a minute to remove, I always negotiate the counterman first before pulling it. They kinda got you by the pills if you already took the time to remove it.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

Is it that damn LKQ that's buying up the JYs & raising prices.Prices here went up when the local PYPs were sold off & also "half" price days are only 40% off.

Makes me wanna wear baggy pants to stuff my pockets, socks & anywhere else I can with anything that fits.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

I was in desperate need of a new column about a week ago and Pick N Pull had "one" Camaro on the lot. A 89 with Automatic Transmission.

When I walked up to the car, it was picked through really well and parts scattered every were.
I opened the door and took a look.

A complete tilt column in exhalent condition with shiny new keys in it.
I could not believe my luck.

The OP bypassed VATS and installed a new key cylinder.
I had VATS removed from my EPROM so that worked out perfect.

I got it for $70.00 and she did not charge me for the ignition switch or the switch for the lights.

$70.00 sounds reasonable to me considering that same column listed for $ 300.00 on EBAY.

I have never had a problem with Pick N Pull here.

Re: Pick-N-Pull

Had nuthin' but good luck with Pick&Pull,...

My Trailblazers' wheel folded after a tie rod failure about a month ago. I found that P&P had a couple Trailblazers so I went to check them out. I bought a couple things I NEEDED and returned because the parts were so cheap, the place was very organized, and they had a decent selection.

Their part prices are posted online,.... EXAMPLES:
Manifold Intake-Hiperform Car $39.99
Transmission Rwd (Auto) Car $119.99
Head - Aluminum W/O Cam Car $54.99
Door Assy W/Hinges(Cmplt) Car $55.99

What have I bought from them in the last month:
(03) Trailblazer CV Axle = $20
(03) Trailblazer AC Door actuator = $15
(00) S10 (Awesome) Leather wheel= $30
(00) S10 Rear Calipers = $15 (each)
(98) Camaro Delco Monsoon Amp = $15
(98) Camaro Upper Strut Mounts $15 (each)
(98) Camaro Front Calipers $15 (each)
(95) Camaro Taillight = $15
(98) Camaro Assorted rust free brackets $5 (each)
(03) Escape radiator = $17
(03) Escape coolant bottle = $5
(05) Malibu center caps $12 ( set of 4 for 95 Z wheels )
(07) Impala tail lights, pair $30
(07) Impala Dash Cowl/Sensor $25

The biggest thing; When I returned to my Trailblazer to install the CV axle I found that the 4x4 "engagement actuator" was busted off the side of the oil pan and I had no idea it was like that till I tried to pull the bad axle out.

I couldn't screw around and NEEDED a replacement NOW. This "actuator" was a $350 parts new and on E-Bay they were all $200. I returned & the P&P price was $17. ( I DID get this during 1/2 off weekend as well as other stuff not listed above. )

Sadly; I've never found a Thirdgen in a Pick&Pull. There are only 2 P&Ps in the north-east, but it's still the type of junk yard that If I go there and see ANYTHING that I want,..... I pull it and have NO complaints about their prices. There is NO other junkyard around here that will sell me a good complete door for $60, a tranny for $120, or pull an aluminum head for $55.

P.S. Vehicles do NOT LAST in this place !! Several times I've returned to get parts from vehicles that were there during my previous visits,... and after only 1-2 weeks those vehicles were gone. In 1 case the Trailblazer arrived new/complete and was GONE less than 2 weeks later. ( It wasn't there 1 day, 2 days after I returned & pulled the 4x4 actuator and 1 AC Door actuator from it & it was gone about 10 days later ) Almost nothing in the place lasts more than 2-3 months.
