85 trans am stock radio/ speaker set up check this out
i have an85 trans am, just wondering if this set up is stock, i installed a new head unit and was about to replace the old 6x9's in the back when i found that theres no 6x9 speakers there instead a fiberglass or plastic box with a 4x6 speaker above a 6 1/2 kicker speaker or sub bc it only picks up lows and to activate the kickers theres a gain switch on the dash thats why im thinking that it is stock but my problem is that i dont know how to wire them up. i can send pics of it please help!!!!!!!!!

any idea on where the amp would be located for the subs or if there isnt one, wheres the wires for the gain switch maybe i can get them to work that way so far i only found RL RR FL FR speaker wires in the harness and that plug with battery wire. do you think the subs run off of just rear speaker wires?

I believe the "amp" is just in the head unit. I'm not sure whether the gain control is a passive or active unit, and I can't recall where the wiring for it goes, but the head unit has the standard harness plug, so whatever it's doing, it must do after the head unit.
My head unit didn't work when I bought my GTA, and I never bothered to play with the factory crap before ripping it out, so unfortunately I'm not real familiar with the system.

There is an amp for the factory subs, its located behind the plastic panel where the dash pouch is. The whole system is designed to work with the factory stereo. Do a search, there's quite a bit that's been written about them.

awesome guys, thanks for the info. just need an opinion now im thinking about taking that box out instead of messing with the dash and the wiring and putting in 260watt 6x9;s and then usung a 12' audiobah in the back so i think that would sound a lot better then stock performance stereo anyhow right>?

If your taking you stock system apart let me know if you don't want the wiring harness to the rear sub speaker boxes. I'm interested in that if you can get it out in one piece. Also the gain switch.

Actually no im not taking the harness out just the boxes they are already out and 6x9 are in and 5.25 are in the front just waiting on the amp but so far it sounds kickass, so now im wondering how much power do i need for the sub? its dual coil 400watt sub, 800 or 1000watt sound ok?

Re: 85 trans am stock radio/ speaker set up check this out
Did u take the dash off and check the up fronts to be sure thats the size im looking into buying new up front for mine and I thought they were 4x6's in front? My 85 is the same way gain bar and had them weird what I called "first gen component speakers" lol im doing the same thing putting 6x9's in there place and a good set with some baffles will sound better im also going to be running two more high powered 6x9 components in boxes with an amp and two 15 inch diamond d3's..... what is the rms rating on your 12 is it 400 watt peak are rms? That what matters if its a 400 watt peak power sub not rms a 400 watt rms amp will blow it to pieces
