Pioneer heat unit won't turn on

Just got my 92 RS on Saturday. It came with one of the Pioneer 1.5 Din cd players, but the PO could never get it to come on in the 5 years he owned it. I pulled the harness out of the back of the unit and put a multimeter on the red and orange wires, both have 12V with the key turned over. No lights, sound, nothing on the unit. Any ideas or is the unit dead? It was made in 97. I forget the model but it's like DEH 45 something or other... one of the ones that everyone seems to like for older GMs. My plan is to get one of the HU Mounts and a new MP3 receiver but would like to use this one until I get the money for that, if possible.

Red, Orange wires in the radio harness or the car harness?

On the readio, Yellow should be 12v. Red should be 12v with the key on. Not sure about Orange but in most standard schemes, Orange/White is to the dimmer.

Re: Pioneer heat unit won't turn on

Sorry I should have specified... when I pulled the harness out of the back of the unit, I put my leads right into the harness holes to make sure the 12v was coming all the way through all the jumbled wiring mess. I was going by memory last night before bed and thought it should have been Red and Orange. I'll check and see what yellow does tonight. Probably need to check all of them to make sure there isn't voltage coming through a wire that shouldn't be getting any!

First of all did you check the fuse in the back of the Pioneer head unit? If not check the fuse for assy and the fuse on the back of the radio.

That's a good point. Some of them are accessible from the back of the unit and others you have to remove the cover to gain access.

Re: Pioneer heat unit won't turn on

Haven't checked the fuse again yet. Got caught up trying to fix other problems last night. Tonight I'm hoping to check the wiring and fuse. I know there was an inline fuse on one of the wires that was still good, but I don't remember seeing one on the back of the unit. I'll have to check again. I took the cover off the unit hoping to see something but I would have to seriously do some disassembly and wasn't really in the mood so I just put it back on. Didn't see an obvious fuse inside though.

Re: Pioneer heat unit won't turn on

Tried giving red and yellow 12v, red and orange 12v, and red/yellow/orange 12v, none of which produced anything. I think the unit is just dead. There's about 4 generations of wiring harnesses all spliced together so it's been around the block.

Based on your description she's probably toast. Can always pull it and test it with a 12v power supply or battery on the bench.
