Power mirror switch options
Hey guys,
I shorted out my mirror switch (again) this week. The PO had gotten lazy when he swapped the doors out and it is one connector i didnt look at close enough, needless to say i am now looking for a new mirror switch, i do have an add in the classifieds.
However my question here, has anyone found a power mirrror system that operates like ours with a joystick style controller? I know there will be some rewiring to use the 4th gen style, but im heading to the JY this weekend so I figured id take a look. I am thinking about trying to use the 'Bird molded door panels, and if i get the right joystick style it wouldnt look out of place, in fact it should fit right where the remote mirror stick went in front of the arm rest connection.
Any ideas would be great. Thanks all

The typical joystick has 4 single pole, single throw, normally open contacts.
The stock switch is a double pole, double throw, center off type.
To use a joystick it would have to control relays to mimic the stock switch.
What you need to do is obtain 4 double pole, double throw, center off relays.
Those relays contain 2 coils.
2 relays will be for the left door mirror, 2 will be for the right door mirror.
1 of the 2 for the left door will be for UP-DOWN, the other will be for LEFT-RIGHT.
Same setup for the right door.
You can retain the present Mirror Select Switch.
Have the joystick direct voltage to the appropriate coil.
Have one of the center (movable) contacts of each relay pair connect to the Mirror Select Switch.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Another option would be to eliminate the Mirror Select Switch and use 2 joysticks.
You would still use the 4 relays.

Re: Power mirror switch options
I had a 4th gen bird switch and a Caprice switch for using later third gen mirrors in my 87. If I run across notes or parts you might need, I will drop a line.
My testing of the third gen mirrors with Caprice switch was easy. You should have an easy time if you study the diagrams.

Re: Power mirror switch options
I went with the early 90s Caprice switch for non-third-gen aesthetic reasons.
In one pic, you can see the firebird switch mounted in the trim piece which mounts above the door panel adjacent to the a-piller.
The 4th gen firebird switch is nearly the same as the Caprice except for the **** color / shape, and minor differences in o.d. and shape. For all intents and purposes, they're the same.
These style switches are physically close to readily replacing the cable control style **** assemblies on some older GM vehicles. I personally think the driver side cable **** in a second gen that points towards the driver would be nicely replaced by the Caprice switch since it's chrome. Maybe there's a third gen cable control place on a door panel where the fourth gen switch would look natural? Since the third gen Camaro cable controls go 90deg. out of the **** setup, and the wiring of these switches does, it would work well?
I did some research on terminal pins, so I may have some more notes on wiring. Let me know if you think the fourth gen switch would help your car.

Re: Power mirror switch options
well thats exactly why i am asking.
I am working on a molded firebird door panel swap and would like to put a joystick style controller in the cable style bezel that pops into the door panel in front of the arm rest mount, make it look almost factory. I think using the molded door panel gives me a little more room between the face and the door for the switch to fit. then its just a matter of cutting and splicing.
but who knows, maybe i am crazy.
