Just got a 91 GTA cheap and it needs love

I picked up this GTA last week for $700. It has 126k miles, the wrong nose, mold, and a significant wiring problem. I've done a tpi and 2 lt1 swaps into my 91 RS so I figured Id help save this repo'd GTA. There are a few connectors I have not seen before and I'm having trouble getting info on them also under the drivers dash is a mess. If anyone recognizes electrical the items in the pics I post please help me out. I'll add a few overall pics of the car so you guys can see it. It's really not too bad...

Re: Just got a 91 GTA cheap and it needs love

The headlight control module is gone, that's the two connectors and mounting bracket on the firewall.

All the relays and the module hanging under the dash are probably related to the alarm/keyless entry.

The green switch with the metal bracket is the hi beam switch, it normally is on the column by the ignition switch.

I'd start by ripping out the alarm. Everything with a wire nut should be inspected and repaired properly.
The bundle of wires under the driver's side kick panel area probably used to go to the start enable relay. That's part of the VATS system, the relay would have been in that square hole under the tar-like goop the factory used. Your hand is in the way in the best pic that would show the relay, but it looks like it's missing. The relays are most likely there to drive the keyless entry, the power lock relay is on the driver's kick panel above the start enable relay.

Once the alarm is out, you can start putting things back to stock.

Re: Just got a 91 GTA cheap and it needs love

Thank you! That helps a ton as so much of this is absent from my Camaro so I have no reference. Do you know if the headlight modules are the same through all years? I found a cheap one for an 89.

Also here's another doosey. This relay is in the passenger side front fender below a black box and has multiple wires that look modified and one ran all the way to the trunk.

That looks to be aftermarket as well.

Re: Just got a 91 GTA cheap and it needs love

There are two or three different headlight modules used across GM platforms, Sunbirds, Fieros, Corvettes, etc. They all look the same on the outside, but some are different internally. I'm not sure off-hand which ones interchange. 16514174 is the original part number for the module on a 91 Firebird. Should be able to find a crossover from that number. Jump on Google and search a bit and you'll find an answer.

The module has a mildly complicated relay inside that likes to fail spectacularly in random fashion. Sometimes you'll get one light that comes up and won't go down, or won't come up at all, etc. It's pretty common for them to fail, and the only real fix is to find a good one. Check the wiring, etc before plugging in a good module. I've seen where people have tried to splice the left and right headlight motors together, which just fries the module.

That looks like some kind of aftermarket relay or module, the bullet connectors give it away. Follow the wires as best you can and usually you'll figure out what they're for.

I too would start by removing the non stock wiring and electrical. IF you have enough experience to tell the difference. (Or ask here).

Then start testing.

I'd spray the mold w/ Lysol brand disinfecting spray.

Re: Just got a 91 GTA cheap and it needs love

Thanks, I'll give Lysol a shot. I got a lot done removing the alarm and discovering other issues. The relay in the fender is for an aftermarket power antenna for which I've found the stock wires. The rear hatch motor had the orange wire cut, and I've found the missing starter relay. Rear hatch motor
The parasite has been removed
Can anyone tell me what the copper and orange wire/connector are for here. The rest is the neutral safety switch and trans wiring.

Here is the driver side minus the alarm. A few wires to fix but not too destroyed. Nothing missing thankfully.

Orange wire with white connector is for the cig lighter, I think the wire with the missing casing is also for the cig lighter in the console.
