2.8 to 350 carbureted help
Hey guys! I'm new and need some help... I just recently bought an 86 camaro with a 2.8 v6 and my timing chain skipped and its flooding out. Instead of fixing this motor i found a 350 sbc thats carbureted and was wondering what all im gonna need to do the swap. I've never done a motor swap before and ive got someone who is willing to help me but has never done one in a camaro or firebird. I just want to know what all parts im gonna need to do the swap and i have a t-5 in my car which i know i will need to swap the bellhousing for now untill i can get a different trasmission. anybody have any recomendations on easiest and quickest way to do the swap what parts will i need and what would be a good manual transmission for it when i can afford it? I just got done doing a carb 350 swap in my 87 TA. It originally had a 305 TPI in it. Really the only real issue I ran into was electrical and fuel. I decided to remove the computer since it really wasn't needed anymore. Also because I removed the TPI and the computer I had to wire the fuel pump to ignition and run a Holley fuel pressure regulator with a return. I was able to use the factory lines that way. As far as everything else goes the only other issues i ran into was going through all the wiring and only keeping what was needed. Pretty much the triggers for the coolant and oil pressure gauges.

this helps me out also as i just got a 88 camaro that had the 2.8 now has a 350 carb and im trying to figure out the fuel gauge and what not do you by chance have a link to what you used?

Well I actually just finished a 350 SBC swap into an 83 2.8 camaro so I should be able to help you out. o First thing you should do is read the sticky on the V6 to V8 swap on the top of the engine swap forum, this will give you a baseline of what you will need for the swap. Basically anything that bolts to the V6 probably wont bolt to your SBC. In a swap like this its best to have a doner car so you do not get nickel and dimed to death. I completely understand being on a budget, and it probably is not possible for you to have a donor car. Your best bet is to buy a motor that already has all the accessories you will need, (power steering pump, alternator, water pump, belts , intake all that stuff). You will need motor mounts out of a V8 as the mounts are probably different, mine were atleast. Get new inserts while you're at it, they arent hard to put in the clam shells since they will already be removed. When you reinstall the mounts you have to be sure to move the mounts forward most mounts instead of the 2.8L location.
In your case you will need the fuel pressure regulator so you can run your stock pump, although I feel as though it would be nicer to get the carb pickup since replacing a mechanical fuel pump is only 20$ and takes 3 minutes compared to 250$ and 4 hours worth of work with an electric pickup. I am unsure if the V6 slave cylinder for the clutch is the same as the V8, I had the mechanical linkage so I couldnt tell you everything you need to know about that. You can use your current driveshaft, and the transmission cross member is the same.
I was actually going to do an entire write up of my swap so it could be added to the V6 to V8 swap sticky, I just havent had the time to do it yet. My timing belt snapped in my 98 ranger and I have to focus on that first. But if you have any questions id be happy to help you in any way I can. Doing the actual swap is not that hard, you just need to have certain things to make the swap go smoothly. For example dont expect to swap the motor in a weekend if 1. its your first time swapping a motor, 2. there is a foot of snow on the ground, 3. and you only have a craftsman socket set. make sure you have the area to do the swap, and make sure you have the tools and the support to do the actual swap before you dive head first in. good luck PM me if you have questions.

well my swap got postponed due to truck needing a new motor so i am now looking for a 2.8 to swap into mine for now until i can get the other one rebuilt so does anyone have a good running 2.8 motor for sale around the south dakota iowa minnesota area??
