Overhead console event wheel substitution?

I have done several searches, and I can't seem to find much success in replacing the event wheel at the front of the overhead console with anything useful, other than some power window switches. My car already has power windows, and I like the switches where they are. I saw a lot of people wanting a compass/temp display in that spot. Anyone have any luck doing this, or anything else?

Pictures are much appreciated!!

I've thought about mounting a radar detector and/or tweeters there. Haven't seen any pictures of it done though.

Re: Overhead console event wheel substitution?

It would be cool to have an external temperature readout there. I have one in our minivan.

Re: Overhead console event wheel substitution?

Something like OBD status messages / error codes could be useful. Could be done with a 320x200 px tft and an arduino. Seems like a bigger project though...

Just need to build a face plate and may need to stick out a bit. But it may just fit. I have to measure my overhead unit.

Pretty neat! I could see doing that to mine.
Just a 38" cable to the remote sensor. Where would you mount that? Maybe extend the cable?

Yeah that would be the question, is where to mount the sensor. Cant be that big of a deal though I would think.

Re: Overhead console event wheel substitution?

This is kind of neat too. Not sure what it can be used for and would need a raspberry PI to run it. but it would be cool.

What are those Hawkeye1980? Are they used like a small tablet?

Re: Overhead console event wheel substitution?

Yeah that's what it looks like. But I THINK you need a small computer to drive them. They make these small Linux computers called Raspberry PI and this one has a touch screen so it seems. I have to look further into it, but its neat either way.

They have an enclosure for it, but it may be too big for what we want:

Re: Overhead console event wheel substitution?

I've seen the space used as a switch panel before. But I'm sure there's more useful things for that space.

Re: Overhead console event wheel substitution?

They have a Bluetooth ODB 1 tester now. Could be a Raspberry Pi like above can be installed, if it has blue tooth I can get diag. from the ODB 1 tester. Doesn't look to be all that expensive either.

Re: Overhead console event wheel substitution?

That could be really cool. What about GPS? Has anyone had a GPS that would fit? Or is the hole too small?

Might be too small for GPS. Not even sure if the screen would fit, but its fun finding ways to improve the overhead unit.
