Best year for a tilt steering column?

The shift interlock is messed up in my 86s column that's a non tilt wheel so IV decided to pull it and upgrade to a new tilt wheel. Since I don't have vats what's the best car for me to hunt down for a proper column?

You can use a 1984-88 Camaro or 1984-87 Firebird.

Re: Best year for a tilt steering column?

I think the early columns had some minor differences, hopefully someone else will chime in if the earlier columns will fit with changing something minor.

Re: Best year for a tilt steering column?

Earlier column is no good due to the Wiper Motor wiring that runs thru it. The 82-83 Wiper system was different than all other Thirdgens.

Pretty sure the 88-89 Columns should work too. If they have SWC or VATS you just don't connect that wiring. IIRC the 90-92 will also work,...... ONLY if the wiper plug at the base of the column is re-pined.

I've got a couple decent tilt columns that would work in your 86,.. .one has a Grant wheel hub already installed on it. if you can't find one local feel free to send me a PM for info.

i pulled one from an 87 GTA at our local yard. Tilt works well as well as everything else, even had the ignition key as well. Thanks for the offer though John!

Awesome ! Finding bigger stuff local is always cool because you avoid the RIDICULOUS shipping expenses that way. The fact that is had a key is beyond lucky too! Glad to hear that you're 'good-to-go' !!
