91 Camaro Rs tbi reliability

Hoping to get a nice deal on this camaro..

It's a 91 Camaro Rs with the 305 tbi.

The cons are it has almost 200k miles. According to the guy the PO rebuilt the engine 110k ago. No paperwork so assuming the engine has 200k (though the guy sounds promising with the rebuild can never be too sure) would you say Id get some good driving out of her?

Mechanic owned apparently and they only want around 1500 for it. Problems are it may need a starter soon and steering rack is beat up a bit.

What do you guys think. Deal or no deal til I can buy another one in greater condition in a years time.
Also has 20 inch irocs on brand new tires.

New to third gens and this would be my first

Re: 91 Camaro Rs tbi reliability

Depends on the rebuild and who rebuilt it for how long it will last now.

I have 322k on my 89 tbi and it has only had the valve covers off. They can last as long as you keep them running. Mine is super-stock with only exhaust though. Can't speak to those who have modded theirs more than a cat-back exhaust.

Its a 305, drive it until is asplodes, then build a 350 for it.
For 1500, why not? Hard pressed to find any car that runs for that much, much less a good ol' fashioned GM.

Re: 91 Camaro Rs tbi reliability

Mine has 195Kish on my TBI 305 and I drive the ***** of the bitch every day. Every time I drive it I pretty much rev it up close to redline, its been raced, its done burnouts, ect ect. Only sign of it getting tired is a little bit of oil consumption (about a quart every 3,000 miles). Keep oil in it and run it. And save up for an engine.

I have a 150000 mile 305 that's totally dependable.that being said it leaves a cloud leaving stoplights.probably needs valve seals.

Re: 91 Camaro Rs tbi reliability

I recently purchased a 305 camaro that was heavily neglected. The transmission wasn't installed correctly, it was highly sunrotted from the AZ sun, and the interior was garbage.

The engine smoked a bit on startup but hasn't given me issues. I changed my valve stem seals and did some needed cleaning (sea foam etc.) and the engine runs beautifully now. It has about 160k miles on it. If you like the look of 20 inch wheels, and the tires are new. I'd say get it if you haven't already. I spent 1100 on mine, painted it, and have done some other work and really enjoy it. It's still a project, but I can use it as a reliable means of transportation at the same time.

322k? That's impressive. And to think the Gas Monkeys called these "disposable cars". I'd like to see one of their beloved 64 Impalas or some such thing get that kind of mileage. Good luck.
