1991 Camaro rs wont start
hey guys my name is Jakob im new to the forums just recently picked up a 91 Camaro rs TBI 305 with the LO3 engine I cant seem to get it to start when I turn the key over the fuel pump turns on. security light blinks and goes off car does have a check engine light on but car cranks over perfectly fine iv tried spraying starting fluid down in it still get nothing. I replaced the coil, the ignition control module now all that is left in my mind is the pick up coil in the distributor. I cant get spark off of anything on the distributor or when I had my buddy turn the key over and cranking while I stuck a screwdriver in a plug wire still no arc what would u all assume or believe it to be?

make sure the rockers are moving, if not you could need a timing chain and gears

Start with basic checks:
1) Do you get +12volts at the coil during cranking?
2) Make sure that 2 wire harness between ICM and coil is in good shape and plugged correctly.
3) Check ICM - some stores offer testing of ICM.
4) Check reluctor coil for continuity. (2-wire white plug inside dizzy)

Re: 1991 Camaro rs wont start
From what I've researched, I'd definitely check the Ignition control module (under the rotor in the distributor cap) first, then suspect the Pickup Coil in the distributor. I was dealing with random no starts and staling, but I went the route of replacing my fuel pump first. I do think it is an intermittent issues with an ignition problem on my car, so I purchased a new distributor and have yet to put it in.
On my Bronco, I had similar issues, and it was getting no spark. It turned out to be the pickup coil in the distributor. I would follow RFmasters advice, because that should pinpoint the ICM or pickup.
Make sure though if you get your ICM tested, that it is quite warm before (by either them testing it a whole bunch in the store to warm it up, or leaving it in the engine bay of the car you drive over in.)

Re: 1991 Camaro rs wont start
Hmm, well I would a wiring issue somewhere is causing that.
First I would check the fuses and make sure they are all connected well. If the lights work intermittently, it's probably not a fuse being that they would just blow, but still check them and make sure they are all seated properly.
I don't know enough about the wiring in these cars yet being that I got mine just a few months ago so I can't really help with where to look when it comes to the wiring.
If you can, it may help to start a new thread and give some more detail of when it happens that way other people can chime in too.

i would suspect the headlight switch ... if it were my car, i would unplug the switch and use a jumper wire to test

Re: 1991 Camaro rs wont start
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember that you need to have a certain amount of posts before you can create a new thread. I think it was like 25? Maybe it was 10. That was a long time ago though when I first created my account so maybe it changed or I'm flat out wrong.
So the picture DynoDave posted shows exactly what you need to do to post a new thread if there is no restriction before making one.

Second half of article, starting at "HEI Diagnosis". Article written for HEI with four-pin module, but much of it applies to your vehicle, except you also have the computer and wiring to consider.
