Ok I haven't been on the boards in a very long time, I've been busy with work, but anyway, I am re building my camaro after it was severely damaged in the April 27th tornado, it was one of the few things I had that wasn't completely blown away, but before the tornado I had the intake and heads off and the lifters were exposed to the elements for 6 months after the tornado, the ones that were raised in the bores had some slight surface rust but looked otherwise undamaged, the rollers look fine, I am more worried about the internals as the whole lifter valley was full of house insulation (the shredded paper kind, that's what they used in our house)...what do u guys think.

Sounds like bad news, moisture, surface rust everywhere, it will only be worse inside where you can't see it. I really hate to say it but I think the whole thing needs to come apart for a proper cleaning :/

You should be able to re-use them if you hit them really well with an emery cloth. Otherwise get new ones so they don't wipe the bores. Considering you aren't even supposed to mix lifters into different bores, I wouldn't chance it.

Sorry forgot to mention, the engine is a 550 hp 383 full roller, and I'm already having the whole bottem re - done due to the fact that the oil pan was completely full of rainwater, I'm trying to keep costs down as insurance didn't cover it, we kept the lifters marked so they will go back in the same bore, I'm more worried about the lifter innards than anything ells, if I can fig out how to shrink pics I'll post them, I have about 20 or so

Should be able to take the lifters apart and have a look.

Never taken a lifter apart...they are comp roller retro conversation lifters. Somebody have detailed instructions?

yes. disassemble the lifters, clean and re-use. or hit the JY for another set from a motor that looks clean and hasn't been opened to the elements. they may look good on the outside but the innards can gum up.

He can't do that. Using retrofit lifters. I would ask comp if you could send them in for inspection and a rebuild personally. Not worth risking a huge failure over a relatively small price.

missed that thanks. would definitely not re-use without though without someone inspecting and/or cleaning them. I've run into gummed up lifters that looked fine on the outside.

Any internal engine components exposed to the elements, dirt, etc. should be cleaned, dis-assembled, inspected, cleaned, re-assembled, and cleaned.

Did I mention the parts should be cleaned?

If in doubt replace them with new.

I'll contact comp, hopefully they can do somthing with them, it's close to 5 bills for a new set, also dose anyone know how to shrink the size of pics with an Android, I lost my computer in the tornado, I have pics of the damage to the car, but they are all like 2 meg and no clue how to change them w my phone

Upload them to photobucket. Get their app and it will auto resize them.
