First start up new engine
I just started my rebuilt motor its a 355 super ram, corvette 113 heads, slp cold air, tri y headers, zz4 cam. Well at first it didnt start like it was low on gas or no pressure was there. Confirmed there was fuel pressure, spark, adjusted the timing as close to 6 degrees btdc. I had to initially spray starting fluid to keep it on for a couple of seconds. The last attempt was kind of keep the throttle body slightly open. The result kinda stayed on then wanted to die but after it was on loopey idle, could here pops like backfire through the intake manifold. I dont think this is normal my electronics and sensors should be fine car has sat for 1 year i took all the precautions to make sure i put everything back together correctly. Is there something i did wrong or could have gone bad?

Re: First start up new engine
Should i try to rotate the crank pulley a full rotation and set the timing mark around as close to 6°btdc.
It still starts up but i heard some popping noises coming from the plenum

Prolly NOT the dist 180° out. Wouldn't run AT ALL like that.
Sounds like a bunch of lifters are too tight.
Back em all off a full turn. See if it runs. If so, adjust em all to zero lash, then shut the motor off, then add your desired preload.
I'd suggest a good bit more advance than the stock "spec" since your engine is no longer stock.
Also, check for enormous vacuum leaks; power brake hose or PCV valve hose not hooked up, leak at a runner gasket, etc.

Re: First start up new engine
I've put in a distributor 180 out twice... once it didn't fire and sounded like a plunger on a tile floor and the second time it fired up and backfired out the carb instantly.
If that many rockers were that tight, would it even crank?
Either way it sounds like it's certainly a timing issue (valve or distributor).

Don't beat yourself up over it. Fix it, learn how to set timing, learn from your mistake and move on.
Good little story for you.
Back when I was a late teenager, my mama's hubby was trying to change the intake on a monte carlo. He had a MAJOR prob with setting the timing. He fooled with it for 3 mo. and with my mama telling him "call John, he knows how to do it, he can have it running in 30 min"
3 mo. later and after catching his hair on fire from a carb backfire and burning his forehead he broke down and called me. I rode over there, got out of my car and 20 min later he was taking the monte carlo for a drive.
He didn't want to admit that a "kid" knew more than he did. Didn't want to be showed up by somebody 1/3 of his age.
After we got back from the drive he thanked me and asked how I could set timing so quick and easy. So I pulled the dizzy out (man he about freaked out at that point) and showed him how, walked him through it. Since then he has installed the dizzy and set timing atleast 10-15 times by himself.
Point is, sometimes it comes harder to some, easier to others, but all can learn how if you try enough or get someone to show you how
