i have been told that running chrome molly on the street in a n every day driver is bad because the chrome molly is britle. i was wondering if the same applied to the roll cages?

thanks

moly is hard to weld and tends to crack easily and is prone to hydrogen embrittlement when welded. if i were going to weld it i'd use GTAW and gussets at the joints. you'll be way ahead to just use MS and not have to deal with the problems of CM.

It needs to be TIG welded. The weight saving between CM and MS is very little when compared to the extra cost. There's no reason to have a CM cage/bar in a street vehicle.

GTAW and TIG are the same thing. Tungston welding with inert gas. It's the only way to properly weld chromoly steel.

well i guess it is a good thing i asked then. i will save a big chunk of cash.

one more question, i am also wanting sbc's and i noticed that the majority of the connectors out there dont weld to the front subframe, but rather to the floor board next to the sub frame. is it better to get ones that weld to both sub frames or does it matter. i will be making a ton of power in this car when i get my twin turbo setup going.

thanks
anthony

I can't comment on SFC. There are a lot of different brands available and they all work roughly the same. Most run along the rocker panels. Don't buy a set that bolt in unless you get them welded after they're bolted in.

Mine were custom made. They attach to the rear sub frame near the LCA mounts and attach to the front sub frame on the sides near the tranny mount. I think there's a couple of pictures on my site that should roughly where they attach. That's the proper part of the sub frame the connectors should be attached to. Not to frame supports that are attached to the subframe.

stephen, if you didn't know i was being a bit of a smart ***. come from a VT inspection class i took. some guy from Fla was there and he said all they used where he worked was GTAW, not G-T-A-W like everyone says it but GTAW like it was a word. damn we had fun with him.
