Mystery Firebird???

I got this 91 firebird with all of this special edition packages and what not. It has gold rims, gold firebird emblems on the side, with trans am aero front and rear faceals, and side moldings. Under the hood is a 5L TBFI 305 V8. I have the original window ticket that was in the car window when it was first sold that tells all about the special edition sports features and what not. The crap of it is is that I do a search on the Vin Number online and it says that I have a Firebird formula but I know I don't because I would think that it would have said it on the side of the car or it would have said it on the ticket, plus it doesn't look like any other type of 91 firebird formula that I've ever seen. So I'm just wondering if anyone that goes to this site has ever heard any thing like that for a 91 firebird?

Show a pic of the window sticker and look either in the glove box, or the small storage in the back for an RPO sticker. The sticker tells you every option the car came with. Its got a lot of alpha-numeric 3 digit codes.

I found a sticker in the compartment in the hatchback trunk area. At the top of the sticker there were rows of code and at the bottom there was like 3 sepperate codes. It will be awhile before I will be able to post a picture of that window sticker. I don't have a scanner. At the bottom of the sticker I found something that said that it was a 1991 Firebird/Trans Am. But no where on the sticker does it say anything about it being a Firebird Formula like what the Vin number says. I think this site is the only web site that says that my firebird is a regular firebird, the rest say mine is a firebird formula. The origional owner of my car said that this was a very rare car and the manufacture only made a small handful of cars like this. The Vin number is 1G2FS23E9ML246206 if any knows something that I don't.

I searched the RPO numbers of my car. 7 of the codes didn't work out. I tried every closest number and letter but it still didn't work. The 7 that didn't work out are V1B,R6A,4B3,6X4,4Q1,4X1,462.

Sounds to me like someone may have swapped the VIN tag. There should be sticker inside door jamb on drivers door and one on the engine and frame with VIN. I would check these and see if it has been changed. I sell used cars and rebuild a lot and I have had this problem before. What does the title have on it, does it match VIN on the car???

The Vin number is the same. I also checked the number on the window sticker and it was the same too.

Formula Code

First off the RPO for the TBI 305 is L03. That is the base engine for a Formula, but was also available for base models. The magic RPOs to look for on a Formula are W66 (Formula option) and WS6 (FE2 suspension). If it doesn't have these it's not a Formula. Gold wheels indicates otherwise, as typically Formulas either had 16x8" Deep Dish High-Tech Turbo wheels (245/50ZR16 tires) or optional, the black crosslace rims, also 16x8", also 245/50ZR16 tires.

I have the LO3 code, but none of the others. I'm going to go by my local GM dealer ship and ask them. It's like you said if it doesn't have those parts then it can't be a firebird formula. I'm just curious as to why the Vin number says that it is.

Deal With Formula

There is no separate VIN for a Formula, only the RPO code. However, if a Firebird has the TPI305 (LB9) (VIN code F) or TPI350 (L98) (VIN code 8) the engine codes in the VIN number would indicate Formula, as these engines were not available with the base Firebird. Since you have the L03 (VIN code E) it could be either, as this was the top base Firebird engine, and also the base Formula engine. Like I said, the absence of a W66 RPO indicates you have a base Firebird. In 1991-92 they were available with the Trans Am style ground effects package and a gold crosslace 15x7" wheel which resembles the Trans Am wheel in style, but not size. Note the Firebird has a decklid spoiler whereas the Trans Am and Formula have the so-called "aero wing" spoiler.

There is actually a different number for the models on the VIN. The fifth and sixth number indicates the series and body style. The Formula, TA, and Firebird will have a different number than each other. It doesn't determine the Body style by the engine code. The Designated Title Agent website that I use will show whether it is a regular Firebird, a Formula, or a Firebird just by typing in the VIN. This was added to VIN so that people would not change a vehicle and sell it for a different model.
