Question about 383 Stroker kit
Northern Auto Parts: - Chevy 383 stroker engine master rebuild kit
I was wondering if anyone here has used this before? I'm considering getting it for my next project but not sure if its too cheap for my own good. 625 dollars is a damn good deal including crank.

Sorry I'm very noobish but how is it balanced and can a machine shop do it for me? Is it the crank thats balanced or the whole assembly when put together?

A machine shop has to do it. They'll weigh and weight-match all the components of the rotating assembly if they're not already, and then spin the crank with weights added to simulate the weight of the rods and pistons. Imbalance is corrected by adding or removing material from the counterweights on the crank.

that kit from northern, doesn't come with rods does it? it says crank using 5.7 rods, not that it comes with the rods, but that it needs 5.7" rods.... Still a good deal even if it doesn't include the rods, just seems strange to have cam and lifters and all that, but no rods...hmm.

I'd check out CNC-Motorsports.com also. They have an excellent selection of stroker kits very well priced. I've done a lot of business with them in the past.

balancing
Your right about balancing, which adds a bit to the cost ($150-$250) and hope they don't have to add alot of weight to the counterweights, that gets very expensive. But with a 383 you use a 400 crank, which is externally balanced (weight on flywheel) The 350 is internally balanced. so you have to use a 400 balancer and flywheel/flexplate, The 305/350 parts won't work.

DO NOT IGNORE the suggestions about balancing. Stroker motors do not last near as long as regualr ones to begin with, and they initially start out with a vibration problem. Also, because of the increased stroke there is more wear on cylinder walls.
