Anyone use a set of these? And if so, whatcha think? Any noise or whining or anything? If you set them up yourself, how was the install? Is anyone running the 3.90s? Cause that's what I think I'm gonna get.
i gotta a set of 3:70's, didn't put them in myself, a little noise when new if you really listen hard. went away as soon as they meshed into eachother, i give them a good break in and have been dumping them for a year now with no problems
I wouldnt buy motive anymore after the crap I went through. They use to be made in Italy and have started useing a place in korea and the gears are crap. When summit sent me my gears that were drop shipped from motive I sent them back the next day and bought some richmonds.
when I got my 3.90's from strange they were motive gears from korea or china. They made so much whining noise, I just could not take it and sent them back. I would recommend not buying that gear set

I have a set of Motive Gear 3.73's in mine. No abnormal noises or whining. I installed them myself as far as difficulty its not that hard but you need a pinion depth tool to set your pinion depth properly and a good how too book and take your time shimming it all up properly. One trick i learned is to buy an extra inner pinion bearing and hone it so it slides on your pinion without being a press fit that way you can figure your pinion shims out first and then have a shop press the inner bearing on for you when you have it all figured out.
Thanks for all the input guys. I decided to not go with the Motives. Went with 3.73 Richmonds instead. And as far as the honing out the the pinion head bearing, can anyone chime in on what technique you used to do it. I was wondering what to hone it out with. I was thinking a sandpaper flapwheel maybe?
Thats exactly what i used and it works great you only need to take a couple thousands off. Now some guys may say why are you doing this extra step why don't you just swap the factory pinion shim press the bearing on and set your carrier backlash and call it good(allot of shops i found out do). Well not all grears are made exactly the same it may be a few thousands different than the "factory GM" gears you are replacing. As with my install i needed to change the shim thickness. Extra wear, Noise, and stress on components can be added.(oh if you are wondering i have the Proform 66516 set up tool). My friend a GM Tech and I use this method and tool.
