walbro 255 fuel pump?

Hey guys, curious to see if any of you have experience and or complaints with this pump. Just did a big fuel system overhaul cuz of persistent problems and am now having what would appear to be issues with the brand new pump. It won't hold pressure. Curious to see if you guys have any other fuel pump suggestions

Re: walbro 255 fuel pump?

My walbro has been working fine since I put it in a few months ago, and I know there's a lot of people who have had it for years without issue. Of course there will always be exceptions, but from what I've heard it's generally a good pump. By won't hold fuel pressure, do you mean after priming or while it's running?

Both...I guess there's a check valve in it. When the car is running the pressure is way low. After I did my fuel system overhaul the pressure was up at like 55 without the vacuum line disconnected. I drove it that way for a couple days then put it away and went to move it from the garage the other day and now the pressure is at like 30 and dies immediately. Upon dying, the pressure immediately drops to 0. I did the leak down test and it shows the pump isn't holding pressure

Re: walbro 255 fuel pump?

I'm removing my walbro 255 today and putting in an EP381. Tired of the walbro making noise, etc. It's way too loud.

I don't think I'm going to go back with them. Edelbrock sells one on summit, I'll probably go with them. I feel like I can trust them more

Walbro makes most of the 3rd gen pumps under many different brand names.

Re: walbro 255 fuel pump?

Have you made sure that a leak didn't develop on the connection between the fuel pump and the fuel line inside the tank? That would certainly cause fuel pressure loss and would make the pump appear to not hold pressure. Just a shot in the dark, but might be worth checking out. The walbro pump is a bit loud though so I wouldn't blame you for swapping it out.

I've had a high press Walbro 255 in my supercharged Integra GS-R for 9 years. No problems in 70,000 miles. It regularly sees 60+ psi.

I dont know how to check that other than drop the tank and check it that way. there is a possibility there is a pressure leak between the pump and pulsator, but i'd need to drop the tank. if i drop the tank i'll change the pump just incase anyway. I have been getting suggestions to just remove the pusator too

I get instant pressure to about 30 psi then it seems to start leaking back and then when the pump is kicked off its instantly 0psi

Search the forums!. This is a reoccurring topic and well documented on TGO. There are a few things you need to inspect/replace when you change your fuel pump. I don't have all the links for the threads, however if I remember correctly, there is a piece of hose that needs to be inspected/changed and the fuel damper also needs to be inspected and most likely changed. If you change the hose it needs to be fuel resistant approved.

Best of luck

the reason i think its the pump is cuz it was holding pressure before i changed the pump, sender, filter, and pulsator. my only other thoughts is that the pulsator isnt fitting tightly against the pump, which would make me think that maybe i should delete the pulsator as a few people here have done when i replace the fuel pump. when i searched this topic everyone was blaming the check valve on the pump

Re: walbro 255 fuel pump?

Sounds like a tank drop is in your future to fix a cracked pulsator or whatever.
My pump has been in since the late 90s. Kick the key on and bang, instant PSI. Never held psi very well after shutoff but while running its just fine.

Re: walbro 255 fuel pump?

Stupid question that must be asked.....any rust or debris in tank being sucked into the screen? Will knock out the fuel pressure every time and will restart after sediment settles before the ride.

When I dropped the tank just over a month ago, I did not see anything. The sock was still clean and the filter was flowing fine. I thought maybe water in gas too but it runs too long without moving if I keep the rpms up

Re: walbro 255 fuel pump?

FYI.... you are not supposed to use the pulsator with the Walbro pump. This actually could cause a fuel pressure loss if the seals in the pulsator are bad. Even if they are not bad, it should be omitted when a Walbro pump is installed.

I did not know that. Until this problem, I thought the pulsator was completely necessary. When I replace the pump again I'll definitely remove it

Didn't your walbro come with a short piece of hose and two clamps?

I think it may have. Honestly i just tried to get it together quick and get home to my (at the time) 2 month old baby. Thinking about it, i believe there may have been clamps and a short piece of hose though.

Well, that was to delete the pulsator. You've probably got a huge leak.

Ive been running a 255 walbro for about 4 years now. No complaints at all. Decent amount of Hp Ive been asking of it and it works well. Just my 2 cents.

I used one of their Chinese pumps a few years ago for an LSx. Not too bad.

??? You're changing the pump even though there is an excellent chance that something else might be wrong??? I guess you'll have a spare pump at least lol.

It is such a pita to pull the tank to replace the pump in these cars I'd rather relace it than find out something is no good after putting it all back together. I'm not enthused about spending another 125 bucks but if it's to be positive then I will. This racetronix pump does feel much more substantial than the walbro. The weight feels more significant and I've heard nothing but great things about these pumps. Gonna give it a shot

The LSx one I got was a chinese pump.

he was the only one at the time that had the pump with the stupid little primer hose thing. Everyone else sold the whole fuel module.

When you pull the pump, Install the hoses you omitted last time. They often leak after a pump change if they are at all marginal.

i put one in and had it fail within a year and less than 3k miles. the warranty replacement should be here Wednesday.

other than a sprinkling of poor reviews everyone seems happy and im fairly certain i wont have issues in the future.

Re: walbro 255 fuel pump?

Ok guys, sorry its been forever without an update. I finally had a chance to do the pump last night. I have a sick wife, myself and 7month old so its been difficult lately.

I pulled the tank, replaced the pump with a racetronix pump and put in pulsator delete. Once i started it up, it was MUCH quieter. Once i got the car out of the bay i was using i took a good look at the pulsator and the whole side was blown out. I put my harbor freight fuel gauge on and it blew it apart a bit today so obviously the pressure is too high. It keeps topping off at 60psi w/ vacuum line on before it sprays fuel all over the windshield so thats my next task but atleast it's running now lol

Good to hear! I wonder what's causing the pressure to be so high? Maybe a restricted return line? Keep us posted!

Nice to see it was fixed, even juggling time with the family. (I know how that is with a 2.5 yr old)

Where are you hooking up the pressure gauge?

Re: walbro 255 fuel pump?

no, i put an AFPR on. When i was having original problems i tweaked the pressure up and down several times and it never changed (this was when i found out it was the pulsator originally) and must've left it wide open. After i replaced the pump with the walbro and the pulsator i saw the pressure was cranked but never had an opportunity to adjust it but it was never this high. Then a week after i put in the parts the pulsator apparently ruptured and i didnt move the car for months. Now that i have another new pump and no pulsator i need to adjust the pressure.....but now i need to get a new gauge since the pressure blew apart my harbor freight gauge lol
