Boycott?

I guess this is the right section to post this in. I saw this post on camaroz28.com and thought it needed to be seen here too. My buddy posted it so I don't think he will mind if I just cut and paste his message.

"While watching Channel 2 news here in O-town Tuesday night I witnessed a terrible thing. Allstate showed a commercial discouraging parents of young drivers to allow them to own sports cars. Guess what two cars they showed....yep a 4th gen Camaro and Trans Am. First they showed a scrolling side view of a red Z28 then showed a T/A at night turning on a wet road w/ the tail end hanging out. The person talking claimed to be an Allstate agent w/ a teenage son. This is bad. Many f-body owners are between 16 and 25. Allstate basically admitted in the commercial to charging outrageous insurances prices to deny us of our rights to drive those vehicles. This campaign from Allstate IS GOING to directly affect sales of F-bodies to minors and discourage young buyers. There weren't any Mustangs or Dakota R/Ts just 2 f-bodies getting beaten and bruised in this commercial. WTF. We need to speak out. My very supportive parents have agreed to switch insurance companies (I already am switched because of their prices) and I'm sending Allstate a letter explaining the discontinuation of our families insurance. I think GM needs to be aware of this assault on their maketability as well. Not that it is illegal for Allstate to do what they did (no badges were shown that I saw) but they seem to deliberately bash GM. Lemme hear your comments."

If you want to see what the people at camaroz28 said, this is posted in the F-body lounge section. Basicly they are proposing a boycott of allsate!

I semi agree with Allstate's commercial. No 16 year old kid should have a 4th gen F-body. The cars have too much damn power for an inexperienced driver to handle. Hell I see alot of them smacked up driven by people who know how to drive.

They probably didn't show other cars cause they don't get as many claims from them. I rarely see a teenager driving a RT.

But I'll boycott them anyways cause their rates suck.

I dunno if I fully agree with that
statement. 99% of the kids that cut me off
are in hondas and jap box's. The only kids
I see on the roads in f-body's seem to
drive with care.

The kids in the mustangs. Now they're a different story.

19 yr old here... couldn't afford their rates even if i wanted to use them...

One positive about them using fbodies is that it shows they know what a "real" sports car is

I had a 93 formula and smashed it 3 weeks after I got it. It was my first car and I was 16.

Some of you guys aren't getting the point...
A: It should not be Allstate's right to choose who can drive which cars.
B: We shouldn't allow Allstate to badmouth F-bodies, American muscle cars in general, and the people who drive them. (which includes everyone on this site, if you like these cars enough to sign up for this site, this comercial should really **** you off.)
C: It is not the car that causes accidents. (I drove a 400hp 68 camaro all through high school, never got a scratch, my friend totaled 3 Civics in 3 years)

I don't agree with Allstate badmouthing f-bods. I find that most of the time that, the nice f-bods are usually not the ones in the accidents. Mostly, its the crappy hondas and toyota cars that get into the accidents. There is a reason why the parents didn't buy them an f-bod, and that was because the parents KNEW that their children weren't responsible enough to handle a nice sports car.
Now, I am only 19, I haven't even had my licence a year yet. I bought my car way before I even got my licence. I NEVER race it anywhere that is not legal. In fact, I don't even speed w/ my car. I bought this thing CASH, and I am/have been putting alot of more cash into it. I am going to do everything in my power not to get it in an accident.
I pay $108 a month for liability(AND the bare minimum about required by law) on my 305. There is no way I could even afford full coverage, just because I am under 25.
I just hate it then when insurance companies ASSUME that I am a bad driver, just because I am under 25, and I drive a fancy schmancy sports car. Though, they give lower rates to 4 door rice burners, who you see ALL the time get into accidents.
I have more trouble with those A$$Wipe 85 Mustang 5.0 drivers who think their car is the sh*t, and at ever street light they want to race you, weather or not there is a cop at the corner. The f-bod owners seem to be much less worried about smacking down a mustang owner, than a possibility of racking up their car because of a stupid race.

***All opinions expressed are of SONAR_UN's, and SONAR_UN's ONLY, so if you bada$$ mustang owners want to flame.. go right ahead, YOU KNOW I AM RIGHT ***

well, it all comes down to the driver of the car really. If a 16 year old is a crazy driver, he can be stupid in 4-banger too. I am only 18 years old and i baby my car. I don't drive crazy or beat it to hell. My little brother is 16 and he babies his camaro too. The only thing is that when you have too much power, it can easily get away from an unexperienced driver. A friend of mine has a 350 formula and a vette. He is 16 years old and he is in coma fighting for his life because he was an idiot trying to impress someone in his vette. So drivers can be stupid in any car, but it is just easier to be stupid in a fast one. If you are careful, you will be fine no matter what car you have.

Allstate is not the only one doing this, if you get an estimate from any other insurance company they will almost always give you a higher price just because of the "greater risk factor". I agree with you guys that not every young or F-Body driver is a reckless driver. I have seen far too many "soccer moms" racing to get their kids to soccer, t-ball, or whatever they do after school, and they drive these big SUV's.
Around here though most 4th Gen. F-Bodies are driven by middle aged people and most don't drive bad at all. Now them Hondas and Mitsubishi's are another story.
I will also agree with the fact that most accidents are not caused by sports car drivers, but the four door sedans and SUV's, or those who love to chat on their cell phone while driving. Now there is something they are not talking about.
I was 24 when living in New Jersey back in 1990 and was driving an 88 Camaro, my insurance was over $2200 per year, and this was from a no name company. I now live in Florida and my insurance is about $1300 a year for 3 cars, go figure. This is all with no accidents. I don't insure with Allstate and never will, their rates are way too high for the same coverage.

Allstate's at fault for discouraging the ownership of sports cars.

The young drivers are at fault for not knowing what they're doing. I always hear of how f-bodies are bad to drive in the rain, or how they get into accidents in the snow.

I've had my car since '94. I have never lost control or damaged the car in rain or snow. I even drove in the NJ Blizzards a few years back, when the state of emergency was called, and the plows stopped running.

I learned how to control my car by practicing in parking lots in rain and snow. A few months ago, I took off out of a parking lot (nobody around, thank you) and kicked the back end out sideways. I corrected it, and cheered my efforts. My girlfriend panicked, proceeding to scream at me that I was "damn lucky". I told her that was skill that kept us off the curb, that I knew 100% what I was doing, and was in control as soon as I felt the back end slide out. We fought the rest of the night over that. Yes, you guessed it, she lost control of her '87 Camaro in the rain before I met her.

I find it very hard to believe that these cars are so bad in poor weather conditions, but I've never wrecked. That tells me the fault lies with the driver. It's a rear wheel drive car. It acts differently. The majority do not seem to get that.

Allstate should promote some kind of driving school, or parents to teach their children better, or something. It's not the car's fault.

I can vouch for the poor drivability in the rain. I have been known to get the back end loose a little in hard rain. Nothing that I can't control though (Probabally from the hundreds upon hundreds of hours playing racing simulators w/ a steering wheel on my computer). I can drive my parents Intrepid, and that thing is ROCK solid in the rain, its like it isn't even raining, but the first drop hits that concrete, and with one touch of the gas petal makes the wheels spin. Grrrr..

As long as you know what you are donig and dont do stupid ****, you will be fine no matter what you drive. But insurance co's think that if your young and own a car with some power that your gonna go **** around and drive like an idiot. AND it is easier to lose control in an f-body than many other cars. However, i think that they should charge you a normal rate Until you get in an accident. That way we atleast have a chance to prove that we are good drivers. I think what they are doing is ****ed up. Its like telling someone that they are going to lose before you even play the game. I dont like that kinda stuff.
I have lost it in the rain once before, but that was mainly because I had the crappiest tires on there i have ever seen in my life...bald Remingtons...last time I checked they made bullets and stuff...i guess thats what you get when you buy cars in the ghetto
But i've never even gotten a ticket, never even been pulled over, so insurance cos can kiss my ****

Hey I use AllState and am 100% satisfied. And as a matter of fact I comparison shopped all the major insurance companies and they gave me the lowest price. AllState using the Camaro and Firebird is just a prop, i dont feel that are going to discurage anyone from future purchases. And it is a stastical fact that teenage drivers cause more accidents than any other age demigrafic, and these same teenagers have an interest in F-bodys. In my neck of the woods insurance companies run similar ads alerting the dangers of teens and SUV's and they use S-10 Blazers and that doesnt affect their sales in the least. Lastly, these companies outsource their commercials to ad agencies, AllState didnt make the commercial, so find out which ad agency decided to use the F-bodies and boycott them.

It's all in the driver. I drove f-bodies through 13 Michigan winters with no major problems. (Got stuck on a hill once in major traffic ) My only winter incident occurred because some foreign yahoo that had no business driving a new Firebird ('97) took it across 4 lanes and took out the car directly in front of me. Fortuneately it was my winter beater Grand Prix.
Anyhow, All-state blows. We dropped them last month and I'm saving $500 every 6 months.

I was at $2800 a year back in Chicago for my bird a few years ago.

Allstate wanted $4900 a year to insure it... Which do you think I went with?

Right now I am paying only $720 a year for the bird up in Detroit with State Farm. And Allstate still wants to charge me over $2500 a year for the firebird...

Do we see a pattern here?

Why would I choose a company that is over 3 times the amount I am paying now for the same full coverage package? Makes no sense.

They just do not want our business. Which is fine by me. I rather stick with a company who wantsmy business and that I have never had a problem with.

I totally agree that it all depends on the driver. I drove a 65 Malibu with well over 400hp for six years now and have never had an incident. Practice does make perfect and nothing makes up for on road experiance. Funny enough, the only accident I've ever been in was when some idiot smashed into the back of my pops 88 Town Car when I was sitting at a light. Now, i live in atlanta and there are a bunch of spoiled rich boys, who's parents have bought 4th and 5th generation TA/Z28's for them. These kids will get in accidents on almost a daily basis. There a danger to me and everyone else on the road. What i have noticed is that kids who have purchased their own car have a greater respect for it and drive it appropriatly, while these other kids give us all a bad name. I have to admit, that it also bothers me to see these undeserving brats driving 25-30k cars. I'm now 22 and not in a position to purchase a new TA.

Iiii dunno... I know a certain somebody who may or may not read this post who wrecked his nice new white 98 LS1 Z-28 a week after he got it because of his lead foot and hot head. They're partially right in that they shouldn't have anything like that at that age as a first car. But considering that we deal with thirdgens here, even a high end stock thirdgen isn't on the same level as a 4th gen TA or Z28 so there's nothing wrong with a thirdgen being a first car for someone that age.
But the first time I saw that commercial, I was pissed about what they were implying. I would definitely support a boycott of Allstate.

It is funny, as I said I drove a 400hp '68 Camaro all though high school and never came close to an accident... the only accident I have been in was when I had to borrow my Mom's prelude (it was a 86 POS, so it doesn't fit into the "kid screwing around with a fast car" thing) I was screwing around with some of my friends, I was behind him, he slammed on his breaks (in his newer car, ie better breaks) I slammed on mine and slid right into the back of him.
(thanks for reminding me of that with your post bzznczzn)

I'm with topcat40 on this. I too am a 100% satisfied customer. I'm 28 and married and I only pay just over 500 a year for both of my Camaros, one being a V6 and the other being a V8 Covertible.
Allstate or whoever it was that decided to use the Camaro/Firebird in their commercial was a good idea in my opinion. Espcially when I keep seeing TEENS week after week or at least every other week, killing themselves in street racing or just joy ridding. Maybe give some of them parents a wake up call and not spoil their son/daughter with a brand spanking new car.

jza,
Please, give me a break! Don't try to tell me that 4th Gen F-bods are on a totally different level than 3rd gens. A 16 or 18 year old kid or even an adult can still wrap either one of them around a tree just as easy as any other car.

As far as what they are implying, I'm all for it. I would even like to see some type of restriction of 16-20 year old kids in not being able to drive any type of sports car, but being realistic thats not going to happen. I'm glad to see Allstate take the measure to increase insurance rates to discourage parents from getting there 16 year kid a new sports car. I think its great.

Just my opinion.

Well just so you know, not all of us are spoiled little punks whos parents buy us brand new cars, some of us worked hard to buy and continue to work to support our cars. Also, how come i'm not seeing all these TEENS dieing all over the place, being that i am one and all, and probably know and see more teenagers than you? just curious...

One other thing and then I'm over this post, Saying that we should not be able to own sports cars is totally F***ed up, probably half the dads i know owned some kind of muscle or sports car when they were in their teens or early 20's, And like me, their cars were more than just transportation to them. If all i wanted was a means of transportation i would get a civic or something and buy gas like once a month instead of once a week.
Thats it for me.

I agree, I am going to change my insurance company too. All of my buds that drive Camaros do drive with care and with respect for the power the car has. What they should show in the comercial is punk teens wrapping there jap-crap hondas and nissians out to 10000 RPM and lighting up the front tires, those kids are the WORST driver's by far!

I agree that if a parent buys a kid a car they will probably not have respect for it. But I don't think there should be any restrictions against who can drive what. Thats bs. I'm 18 and have a Iroc-Z. My parents have had the same insurance company for a long time so I get my insurance pretty cheap. I also have a lot of respect for my car. I had to pay for it and all of the restoring that I did.

Since most companies base their insurance rates on accident history of the particular model car and the history of the driver, rates are just bound to be higher for cars with a lot of power. I see it all too often when a kid just gets his license and thinks he's the best driver in the world. It happens to a lot of people with powerful cars and that is why our rates will be higher. Insurance companies are obviously going to gear their advertising toward parents so when a parent who agrees with them sees that commercial they might say, "wow, they really care, i am going to switch to them" I just accept the fact that if i got a nice car, i am going to pay a lot for insurance. The rates might be ridiculous, but i'd rather pay more than drive some pos jap car. Wait till one of you buys a badass new ta or something and the insurance company just will flat out not cover you. My buddy's dad bought him a ram air and had to take it back cause they wouldn't cover a 16 year old in that car. That is the same buddy who now has a 94 vette and a 91 formula. His dad bought the cars and he had no respect for them. That is why he has been in a coma for almost 2 months now...that is why our insurance rates are high.

Hmm... i gota funnnny story,
once i raced a fourth, the driver was a forty year old, well, guess what, he crashed, i can handle our cars better than allllot of adults, just something to consider,

i bought my car, i bought my second car, ooh, and my third, in six months, i pay my insurance, all 150 a month, i pay repairs ive asked for gas cash all of maybe two times.
this is my baby, and if any part of the goverment tried taking my car, they can find the keys next to my revolver.

Just my two cents, oh, and dont ferget, they come after us, all performance vehicles would be next.

Live on, Drive Hard, And Enjoy Our thirds.

Car: 1991 Pontiac Firebird
Engine: 3.8
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: Dana 60
From what I had seen in high school, the kids that paid for their own cars took really good care of them and the kids that had mommy and daddy buy their little sports cars for them either crashed them or ragged the **** out of them and killed the engine. I got my 91 firebird when I was 17 and a senior in high school. (summer) and a friend of mine had a 79 Cobra that he had bought. Our cars lasted till now, these kids with a 96 GT and a 94 Z28 and a 98 SS/T and I have talked to all of them and they hate their cars now because they always have to take them in or they have been in wrecks with them. So I know for a fact if I ever have a kid and he wants a sports car when he is 16, he is going to have to pay for it.

well i know if i had either of those cars when i turned 16 i proboboly would have totaled them. Same with most 16 year olds, man espeacially those 16 year old girls whos daddys buy them sports cars...thats a death wish. Anyway i doubt they were trying to single out those cars. they were probobly just using whatever sports car they got the best rental deal on to make the ad

Car: 89' Chevy IROC
Engine: L98 350
Transmission: 700R4
Hello,
This is an interesting topic. I personally beleive if I would have got a more powerful car at the time I bought my first car I would not be here. I purchased an 89 IROC (350) back in June. I have put 2k miles on it since and I can say I honestly find new things out everyday. This was the first car I ever bought and the car I passed my test for my license in. I paid a years worth of savings down and continue to pay 150 a month just for liablitiy. If this car was handed to me Im sure there would be no respect for it. At this age, 17, its easy to make mistakes just out of inexperience. These high performance automobiles have no room for error. I know 9 out of 10 of my friends couldnt handle it.

This does not give all state the right to "assign" to us what type of car we drive by our age. This seems like an encroachement into our freedoms. I also feel that its unfair I have to pay 150 a month for just liability on an 11 year old car and should atleast be able to get a drop in price the longer I have the car not after I turn 25.

It doesnt matter the weather conditions, they do take consideration though, or how good a driver you are. It could be a perfectly clear day out or a terentual downpour. Anyone can get distracted, along with everybody else on the road isnt always the best driver. I do think kids, we still are kids, can get distracted more easily. It should go case by case. As far as All State just picking on GM in the opening of the comm. the insurance agent was aparently at a Ford Dealership. Sorry bout the rant but thought you might like to see a 17 year olds opioion.

Martin

I don't have allstate now but I wil definatly not use them in the future! I have had my firebire since I was 16 and I still have the same one now. I'm 22 and I pay less than $800 a year, With USAA and I have everything except collision. F-bodys may have more power but they are also heavier and your more able to survive in an accident than in a POS tiny Honda. F-bodies are considered med-size cars. You'd think that would help. Plus Most of the ones I see on the road and the younger ones driving a v-6's They don't have the power the V-8's do and I know they are still being penilized. Also when I went to get my licence in my moms station wagon I failed. I know the cop was looking hard at everything to fail me hand signals and all. In the end he said I failed because of the car and that it didn't have a center hand brake for him to pull on... He didn't say that till the end. He pretty much told me NOT to bring that car back the next time. So I brought the Firebird instead. Got the same cop and he just sat back and didn't pay much attention to anything except for the car. Didn't even ask for hand signals. So I guess the cops don't have as much agains teens driving in F-bodys as much as people think. Anyways Allstate is wrong for singling out just F-bodies and not even mentioning those honda death traps which I'm sure more people get killed in!!

I shop around for insurance, and I use Allstate. I only pay $1100 per year for full coverage on both my 91 Z28, and my wives' 95 Cutlass Supreme. They had the best deal for me. Insurance prices just vary from person to person depending on where you live, your driving record, and what you drive. As far as them using an F-body in the commercial, anybody that is going to be deterred from buying an F-body just because of a stupid commercial, doesn't deserve to have one. That's just my two cents.

First off, the comments about teenagers driving performance cars being bad, Everyone said the same exact thing when i bought my 94 zx7r. "its too much power for someone your age, your going to kill yourself, bla bla bla" Wrong, IRRESPONSIBLE kids driving fast cars is dangerous...not every kid is irresponsible. Thats like saying all people over 21 shouldnt be able to drive fast cars, cause they probably drink and will drink and drive. Theres going to be kids doing stupid things in every car. performance or not. That doesnt give the insurance company right to tell us not to use them. Second point. Someone mentioned 5th gen z28's and t/a's....hmmm...am i just left in the dust here, cause as far as i know were still on the 4th generation.

exactly josh! ironically thats my name too. there is not one damn fbody at my high school period(cept mine, and that was last year before i graduated). now, ive seen girls roll suburbans, my girlfriend flew her new explorer right into the back of another SUV, and every other dumb accident that could occur. now.. if there had been more camaro's, would there have been more wrecks? not necessarily. just because someone cant control a car and cant respect it doesnt mean that their peers(peers being people their age in general) shouldnt be able to drive. I'm almost 19 now and ive owned an 83 Z28 and have a 74 Z28 right now , both of which are plenty capable of spinning out, more so on wet pavement. ive drivin plenty of cars, some with lots of power and others i still swear were powered by rats pushing it along. i havent managed to scratch another car or get a ticket. luck? mabye. but i consider myself a good driver. mostly because of the fact that my dad beat it in my head that if i dont acknoledge the fact that a car will spin out quite fast when its wet out, then i will be hurt. that ive done, and im still here, alive and in one piece. saying that all young and inexperienced drivers are not a high risk and shouldnt be aloud to drive certain cars is generalizing, and that is wrong.

I am the father of two girls. The youngest is now 21. We had Allstate for our insurance carrier on everything until our oldest turned 16, and got her permit.
We had bought a new car, and were going to give the old car to my daughter when she got her license. Allstate insisted on raising the rates on all three of our vehicles because of a teenage driver. Everybody else that I talked to said "she can only drive one car at a time, so tell us which car she will be the primary drive of." Needless to say we switched companies, and haven't been back to Allstate since. Frankly, Allstate does not want to insure any driver under 25 for any reason.

Ironically, I almost Rear Ended a Tarus Today, Cause I got Distracted was Looking t a SICK 65ish Ranchwagon parked along the Road

Im 19, I drive a Fbod ( obviously ) and I will tell what car I was driving had nothing to Do with that. I also Had a 79 firebird that I totalled In a head on Collision With a nissan Maxima Doing a left turn. The Car I was driving there had Nothing to Do with that as well.

As A Note, I do have allstate VIA my parents, and as far as customer service is concerned, they Rock. Prices are High yes, But they Settled My 100k Claim No questions asked.

Now, You can Be stupid in Any Car, and you Can Kill Yourself In any Car. Now, If you Sen d Yourself around a Corner at WOT in a PoS Jap Car or in My camaro, Your prolly going to Be more inclined to Bite it In the Camaro, Duh, Your going faster. But what Really matters is the brain that says " yeah, lets hit this corner at WOT cause I think im invicible " thats what causes accidents.

Im Not a Bad Driver, But I do get distracted. I really Dont think that has anything to Do with age.

As far as Allstate urging anyone what car to buy...that's WRONG. Insurance companies shouldn't be able to influence the type of cars the public drives. I agree with the comment about if you buy your own car, you have more respect for it. I'm 19 and my dream car's always been a 92 Firebird. In the past 3 yrs I've went through 3 cars to get to my bird. I bought all of them with my own money and took the best care of them, because if I wrecked them...mommy and daddy weren't there to help me out. I'm a lil different too, the smaller my engine, the more I dogged it. I guess I felt I had to prove something. All of my cars have been rear wheel drive too, and I don't get why people can't seem to figure out how to drive them. I was ridin w/ a girl friend of mine the other day in the rain, and she said something about sliding in the rain, and said it sounded fun...so I looked around. There were no cars, so I pulled a 180 fishtail (I needed to make a U-ey anyways) and didn't feel out of control at all. Sure I slide at times, cuz I like to...but I've only had 2 times I lost control. When I first got my Nissan (my first car) I fishtailed around a corner(first time in the rain), and when I first got my Blazer, I did a 360...it was a standard, I wasn't too smooth with those yet. My Firebird (and I know it's funny) I don't drive hard. I know it's only a 3.1, but unless you're a car guy or you ask, mine looks and sounds like the v8, so people drive next to me, and are afraid I'm going to spank their @$$. I don't talk ****, and I don't race, but my car has respect. I don't feel like I need to drive it hard to prove anything. It's my dream car and I'm happy with it.

Back to the idea of parents buying their kid's vehicles. Friend had an LS1...totalled it. Another friend had a 98 T/A...2 weeks later, 3rd and 6th gear were GONE....3 more weeks, Totalled. Girl friend of mine...99 Mustang GT...not even 3 days later, totalled. Of course, her parents had her a new one within 2 weeks. Rich kids **** me off. Kids who's parents buy them a car have no respect for or a sense of value of the car.
