keep the hard top or T-top it?

debating weather i should cut my hard top and get some T-tops so enjoy the SoCal weather. what do you guys think?

if your putting out alot of HP and TQ, you need to keep the hardtop for added support

Believe me...having T-Tops is not as fun as it may seem.
And with the work involved in doig it..I don't think it's worth it.
Keep the hard top mang. Hard top cars look nicer and they are more structurally sound.

if you want t-tops go buy a t-top car dont cut yours up and pay out the wazoo for the thrill of having t-tops ...they are a blast but if thats what you want get a car with them in it already and just swap all your goodies over to it then sell your hard top or have sister cars...

I have T-tops and even though they don't get taken off much I wouldn't trade them for anything. I have to agree w/the general though, just buy a T-top car. I'm not saying it would be a hack job or anything (I doubt that t-tops came directly from the factory anyway). if I was going to do that I would use as many GM parts as possible; just my

I agree... its not worth it to convert a hardtop car to a t-top car. If you want t-tops, sell your car and get one with them.

I don't know how people can say they aren't fun, I love mine. This summer, I had them off 99% of the time I drove the car, no joke. Even coming home from work (about 7-10 minute drive) I'd take them off. I wouldn't trade them for anything

t tops all the way i needa replace my seals only down side but i live up in michigan to but i also took mine off everyday at work at lunch and since it was a small shop kept em off jus for the 10 min drive hom i love em great in the summer and for them early fall cruises

i got t-tops on my car, and they have been nuthing but problems, i personally would love to make mine into a hard top lol. So yea if it was me i would keep it a hardtop.

Having owned both (2 hardtops and 3 t-tops) i would never want to own another hardtop car. As others have suggested it's just easier and cheaper to just buy a t-top car, switch over all your good/performance stuff.

I have t-tops in a car that I autocross. They leak, they make the car weak, in fact if you run the car with the t-tops in, you can put your fingers between the body and the tops, and your fingers get squeezed as the ca ris cornering! The ca rhas SFC's and it still does it. I have had them off once ina awhile (I live in FL) but If I had my choice I'd stick with the hardtop. The t-tops are also heavy and I'm sure that doesn't help the handling. Let's see, extra weight on top of the car-bad, weakening the frame structure-bad, leaks and uses expensive gaskets-bad. You can take them off twice a year when it's cool enough to go cruising-good. 3-1 bad.

I gotta disagree there. I passed over a few (admittedly cleaner) 3rdgen convertibles before I finally found my current t-top car. There's just nothing better!

Though I do agree that fashioning t-tops is a task better left to the factory. It'd be a nightmare....I shudder just to think. A couple of members have attempted targa tops and to my knowledge neither have completed them yet....but I'm not positive, I rarely keep up with such things anyway. :shrug:

TTops are the #1 reason to own a thirdgen.
TTop cars are a rare sight these days.

Cutting a hard top car is a bad idea, imo.
Driving at nite with the tops off is why I still own a 3rd gen.

reason im asking is because some companies offer the factory T-bar now. i have a set of T-tops(glass) from my old 86 iroc. there are plenty of good body shops in Socal. i just dont know the cost. doesnt seem like it would cost all that much because the T bar is already made and is factory. i may be wrong though.


as you can see in my sig, i have put a lot of work into the car, so im not selling it. that would mean all my mods including the engine swap, rear end, front brakes and T56 were in vain.

Some of you guys sound like you have it good. I had to search for about a year and a half to find a hard top car for sale around here. It seemed like hardtop was an add on option instead of t-tops LOL. I used to be BadBird84 by the way. I just added an 86 to the garage and I changed my name. I would stay with the hardtop if you are serious about racing at all. Ever seen that video where a guys t-top flys off on a drag strip run in a 4th gen Camaro? Just my opinion though, I know some people that love them!

i dont race, so it wont apply to me.. rarely do i go above 95mph. i just like to go out in the hills and canyons and let her rip. usual speed is 30-70mph.

i have done all the bracing to the car, plus im adding a 4 point cage.(just in case some moron hits me, id like to have added protection)
