I'm sure I'm not the only one like this, does anyone else have what i can only describe as an obsessive compulsive tendancy to let a SMALL project somehow lead to a HUGE project? My origional plan was to do a tuneup and polish the TPI intake on my 87 Formula, but now I've got all the accessories and brackets off the motor, the intake off, valve covers off, and pretty much the whole cooling / heating system apart and the exhaust manifolds are coming off tomorrow....
Its crazy. Go to replace the thermostat, end up polishing the thermostat housing, decide i might as well replace the water pump as well, now i've got all the pulleys off and a drying after cleaning them completly with a wire brush and spray painting them, WTF!

Should look nice when you are done. Actually, I am the same way. The last thing I did was replace my tie rods, and while they were off, that turned into wire brushing and sanding the whole front suspension (control arms, calipers, sway bar, springs, struts, etc.), crossmember, and anything else I thought should be black, and painting it all with gloss black ceramic motor paint. I even sprayed the tie rods with adhesion promoter and then clearcoat after that so that they would stay silver longer, instead of getting rusty the first time they got wet.

Ah yes...don't you just love our hobby!
I am very detail oriented when it comes to my car also..but not so much with anything else!
For my current 383 project, I had the Super Ram polished...then had to have the Throttle body polished...then of course u need to polish the thermostat housing...put everything back on and then took it all apart because the fuel rail just did not look right not polished. While the fuel rail was off, ordered new injectors and polished their housings.
I had then painted my pully's, and they looked good, but after comparing them to my polished parts, they just didn't match...so I had them chromed.
I can go and on....it's like a chain reaction!

Yes.. I went as far as painting my MSD the color the body will someday be to match underhood.
(this really isn't exactly A&D tech either but... eh..)

im a victim of OCD...i started once just by changing the oil and it lead to me replacing the engine.

If youre on this site, i think you have to be at least a little OCD. Hell, my neighbor, who has been diagnosed by being "crazy" by the state, said to me that i have OCD for anything Camaro..

you know my co-workers friend had a 69' stang, fully restored. he lived in the boonies, he drove from his house to the street, pulled over, wiped the car down (2km), drove into town (20km), cleaned the car, did his thing and drove back to his driveway, wiped down the car again, drove back to his house and wiped it down and changed the oil. 45km and he changed the oil, and probably wiped off all the clearcoat too

Changing the oil after 45kms?!?!?! Thats rediculous. Then again,Its a different story if he didnt drive it in a long time.

i remeber when my water pump went out, i ended up getting new upper and lower hoses, all new clamps, a new serpetine belt, and a new thermostat and gasket. the funny thing is that none of those items really showed any wear. i tend to go all out while ive got something apart. thats a little OCD imo

How do you guys paint the engine parts to match the body color anyway ?

Do you use high heat engine paint primer and body paint on top of it, or do you paint the parts with engine paint, scuff them and top them with body paint ?

I started to replace a rear main seal in my daily driver. 3 years later its still sittin on jackstands stripped all the way to the unibody with several thousand dollars worth of suspension and brake parts sitting in boxes behind it.

I started by replacing valve seals...ended up ditching the carb and building a custom F.I. setup. 7 months later(hey, I got kids), it's just now almost ready to start.

BUT...I have a temperment for addiction. Just ask my other vices(smoking, drugs, adrenaline).

Just for the record, I believe to actually be considered "O.C.D.", your love for f-body's must interfere with your daily life. (example: you got fired for working on your car instead of going to work) Throwing the term around like this is disrespectful to those who actually suffer from this debilitating disorder.

Just because you can't finish one project before beginning the next doesn't make you sick.
Maybe the thread's title should be changed to Attention Deficit Disorder.
