Aight, pulled the V6 3.1L out of my '91 Camaro and rebuilt the lower end...since I have it out now, I misewell paint it, eh?

It's pretty much all prepped for paint...few things left to do...just haven't decided on a color yet. Any suggestions and why?

Also, any suggestions on a specific brand of paint etc?

At this point, I'm going to either paint it gloss black...or perhaps GM blue. Not sure...

Blue...it's due for a paint job in a year or two...by then it'll also be time for a engine swap.

i had mine painted silver, and it came out great. Its a bit different from the usual black/blue/orange, and have had several people think its an aluminum block. Coupled with aluminum heads, its a nice neat looking piece.

yea there is a cast aluminum color that they offer in engine paint, my friend used on his trans, drive line and rear end on a 86 ford ranger, it was a pretty sharp color, looked natural

But chevy orange and blue is always pretty......seen a Ford Pinto with a Grabber Green paint job on the lower end ...BRIGHT to say the least

I think it might look good with color to match the body.

I dunno, I'd be more inclined for the black engine with polished stuff under the hood. I guess though, you should wait till you get a v8 to do that. I like when you pop the hood and see everything in black and chrome. Looks hot!

My vote would be for the sterotypical Chevy Orange or Black...As for the kind, if your looking for rattle can dupli color has High heat engine paint in many colors..

well, you don't need engine paint. I've used the 69 cent walmart paint before and it's fine, so that opens up a lot more options.

Personally, I gave my engine a white basecoat with walmart rattle cans, and then proceeded to paint it flourescent pink. No oil leaks are getting away from me...and plus when I pop the hood people double take at the pink...it's priceless! (to me)

I went with the black Duplicolor high heat engine paint on my new engine -because that's what it came with originally. (The old engine was so rusted that it had no paint left, so I went to the dealership to discover the original color). Also, that's the color the engine re-manufacturer painted the long block I bought, so I didn't want to change it. Before installing the engine and all the other junk, the engine looked especially great, especially with the brass freeze plugs. Then I painted all the bolts black, the color they were too. Only regret is that I wouldn't have used such a glossy black, as in the wrong light, the new paint can sometimes look like it has an oil leak. Should have gone with a flatter black. The water pump, the valve covers and a couple other items I painted that cast aluminum color (also high heat paint). On the alternator, I only painted the middle stripe part black, as it was, and just cleaned the rest of the metal with a dremel.

Of course, after installing all the junk on the engine, you don't see much of the actual block anymore. Still, it's nice to know that it's clean and looks good. Had to do some touchups after installation scratches and missed areas. I don't know if it's appropriate, but I did the final paint cleaning prep with rubbing alcohol, and wore plastic gloves. Discovered that some parts could be better painted when hung from a wire, or on a wooden dowel rod. Good luck with your project!

I think I'm going to go with the aluminum looking stuff for the block and heads...and I'm going to paint the valve covers and oil pan gloss black. I'll post pictures once it's done in a week or so.

I like the chevy orange, as well...but this is a V6...V6s are not special enough to be painted such a sacred color.

I painted my block and heads Chevy Orange, left the oil pan black, and painted the valve covers black, as well as the upper plenum. The lower intake and intake runners I painted aluminum color. I love it. I dunno how chevy orange would look on a V6 though, it seems sorta out of place unless it's a V8. I used dupli color. It says use primer, which I didn't. It has about 4000km's on it right now and there are no bubbles, marks, or anything else. it looks great still.

lol, i seen a V6 (block,oil pan, water pump, timing cover) in a blazer painted in plasti-cote (or dupli color) engine red (its a high heat engine paint...DUH), its a shiny red, kinda like a fire truck, looked pretty good, heads, intake, and the ***. brackets were in a natural aluminum cast color, like my friend did on his ranger...so that red my look good, but that cast color looks natural and looks real good clean

It's aluminum, technically...It looks more like silver in the pictures.

This gives you a good idea of what it looked like before...It was being degreased at this point...

As I get to building the engine for my Formula, I think I'm going to paint it all black except for the heads/valve covers, which will be red. Ought to look pretty mean.

Thanks for the compliments...I really didn't put too much work into it as I'll just be ripping her out and putting a V8 in sooner or later...but I'm still very pleased with how it turned out. She should be running again by tomorrow.

She's back in now...finished up everything under the car. So, she's sitting on all fours again for the first time in 6 weeks. I just gotta hook up a bunch of stuff under the hood yet...she'll be running again by tomorrow afternoon.




Yea, I know...my engine bay isn't the prettiest thing in the world.
