I don't know man, some ricers have some pretty clean engines. You wouldn't want to be considered a ***** would you?

Haha, I couldn't resist.

Seriously, I would. I think it'll look A LOT better even if it is relatively clean. I'd like to do mine someday but.. nah.

I cleaned my engine the other day nothing fancy just sprayed off the plenum and valve covers to get the gunk off them. I don't see why not clean it.

Heres what I do...

Go to one of those do it yourself car washes with the high pressure hose. I cover the carb, distributor, and alternator with aluminum foil. Spray down the engine bay with plain water to get off what I can. Being extra careful around wires or the areas I covered with foil. Then I spray the whole bay down with simple green or some engine degreaser and let it soak. Then I blast it all off with water again.

Works great and is fast and easy. You just have to be careful not to soak something that water will ruin.

I like simple green and that castrol super clean degreaser (use a mask) for degreasing, for all the plastics and rubber hoses, I used some armorall tire foam. they shine better than new

There are added benifits to having a clean motor, on average a car that has a clean motor will run 8-10 degrees cooler then one that is not. Also its easier to spot any leaks that may start up.

Brian, it's not chrome, it's actually made from billet. I had it made along with a bunch of different pieces at the same time. I just paid a total bill and it didn't break down the cost of the different pieces so I can't even tell you how much just that piece cost. I know if you make a template they can make anything. There is a link on my page to J & B Microfinish in Pontiac IL.

A white engine bay......

Now that's brave.

My sissy a$$ just painted everything gloss black. Sure you can't find leaks easy, but no one else can either.

Yes, you should definately clean your engine. I keep mine spotless. I enjoy it. I dont even show my car. I just like to have it clean. Think about this, dirt holds moisture, moisture makes rust. Plus a clean engine is easier to work on.

No, it's still not painted. I have some issues with the seams, the red glazing compound I used to smooth it over is giving me tiny hairline cracks. I found some epoxy that they use to glue rebar into concrete with, I'm going to try that - if that cracks too, then I don't know what I'll do next. But she ain't getting pearl white until that's done so... until then, she's primer gray...

I think you should clean it up, just look and see what a large bankroll and some elbow grease can do !

This is Eddie Barra's engine, a fellow Recaro T/A ower.....

Eddie Barra's '86 TA that is a bedazzling beauty in 24K gold plate done over seven years by hundreds of hours and costing tens of thousand dollars. Even a digital camera is hard pressed to bring justice to this incredible work of art and a man's dedication to create one hell of a "I don't believe this!" kind of tribute to a Trans Am. And it isn't all show. This car will still perform as a Trans Am should... smoking tires in the parking lot with that unmistakable TA growl!

LOL! That was too funny! No, not much deters me anymore. Matter of fact not much should deter anyone from making mods to their car that they are going to appreciate. To me your car is basically an extension of yourself, it reflects you so, dammit make it reflect you.

If it makes you happy, just do it.

Steve

EDIT: One Eye - Which engine are you talking about? There are, what, five or six on this page? Mine cost around $5000. If you're talking about the gold plated one, read the description below it when he states "hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars" That takes some nuts.

Eddie's car is awesome, you very well might have seen it on TV. He probably has won the most trophies ever for any 3rd gen and is an inspiration to myself and many others.

I have seen his car many times over the years in a variety of publications. Most like his 24k gold "accents" ,I appreciate his original Recaro seat option

Car: 91 RS Convertible
Engine: 305 TBI
Transmission: 700R4
Here's a pic of our engine.
Nothing special I know, but we're getting there. Your looking at a Stock 305 TBI that has a tad over 125,000 miles on it.
Just added new wire loom and vacum hoses.

------------------
91 Mystic Teal RS Convertible. 305 TBI, Auto, stock.
125,000 miles and still going strong.
Only minor mods planned for the near future.
Like headers, flowmaster exhaust, some ignition mods, K&N airfilter, Perhaps a chip if needed.
Waiting for the motor to blow up so I can install a ZZ4 crate motor. Let's just hope it don't blow up too soon.

nice motor scauffiel, i think you should paint your car yellow, im painting mine orange , then we can cruise around in va beach and give everyone whipflash ,
the 24k, gold trans is bad, allso, but hummm i wonder if people say putting a 4th gen ram air hood and spoiler and prehaps the whole 4th gen inside into a 3rd gen, then how is gold plating every nut and bolt in a car not rice ,my point , do what you thing looks good and thats all that matters, !
