My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

Thankfully I was able to buy a car at a great price, that had recently acquired a great quality paint job. Plus, whoever painted it was pretty experienced.

After saying that it sucks at times. Just like many others, I put many hours into washing, polishing, waxing, and even clay barring to keep the paint top par.

1. No matter how far away I park, someone parks RIGHT next to me. Not just the parking spot beside me, but so close that I have to pull out of the spot in order to let my passenger in. This has happened a few times.

2. Speaking of passengers, everyone thinks it's OK to lean against the car with their nice jeans and BIG shiny metal buttons. Then there's purses. Holy crap. If I had a dollar for every girl that either placed their purse on the hood, roof, or spoiler. I would definitely have a built LSX under the hood.

I kinda grew up around nice cars, so I know how to "interact" with them. Maybe this allowed me to have a clear understanding of what not to do around nice paint.

I'm a pretty nice guy. Anyone that knows me can agree. I simply let it go some times, and at other times I will jokingly say something about it, , and they will stop and take no offense.

Oh yeah, my highschool parking lot/ warzone is a story for another day.

Anyone wanna share similar experiences?

The hood, or should I say table.

Nice looking car.

I had an 84 TA in 1986, fairly new, anyway parked far away from the congestion, some a-hole keyed bothsides of the car, sucked.

This is why I kinda don't want to paint my 85 yet. I know in a matter of months it will be scratched and I will be crying for every one of em.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I've had the same things happen to my cars over the years. I came out to find a 8in long dent in the drivers side door of my 86 Camaro when I was in college(it was parked way out in the parking lot to avoid such issues but someone hit it and drove away). The paint wasn't too great on the car but I was still upset about it.

Someone threw a brick through the back window of my 84 and stole a speaker box out of it back when it was a daily driver. The broken glass left scratches on the paint and interior plastics. I spent all of my savings as a broke college kid at the time to get a new back window installed. After installation I washed the car and discovered they didn't use any sealer between the window and deck lid. The trunk was full of water. I found pieces of glass inside the car for years after that.

A cat got accidentally locked in the garage one time and decided to walk all over my car, left several scraches from it jumping on and off.

Then theres the usual people leaning on it, touching, ect...drives me crazy. I feel your pain!

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I just painted mine 3 weeks ago and the week after it was painted we took it to the track. Ran it threw tech inspection and the guy pulls his hat off and throws it, the tech card, and his pin on the top of my car to look under it..... I was fighting mad. It didn't do anything to the paint but damn people show some respect...

I know how you all feel...

I had my low mileage GTA at the gas station once and a girl drove between it and another parked car getting gas. We were the only two cars at the station and there was plenty of area to avoid what she did. How she didn't hit either of us was beyond me. I called her some words she'll never forget then her boyfriend wanted to be a tough guy...let's just say it was the most embarrassing moment of his life!

I have learned over the years, it doesn't matter what you do to keep them nice: some a-hole will swing a door into it, lean/sit on it, or run a shopping cart into it. It can be the only car in the parking lot and some dipsh!t will find a way to f*ck it up. That is why I refuse to spend a lot of money on a great paint job. Just because you are careful doesn't mean some disrespectful person will be.

I used to try and control my temper about this...now I just get mid-evil on their @ss. "If you are going to do stupid ****, you'd better be tough!" is my motto...and I am the Enforcer of it.

Came out one day from work and some girl was sitting on my 91 GTA. There were 3 cars total in the parking lot including her's. I smiled at her and asked which car was her's? She pointed, and I went over to her car: hacked up the nastiest, mucus filled spit I could muster right onto her hood. Seriously, I thought I was going to throw up it was so bad.

Oh, and the other thing that impresses me...strangers putting their hands (complete with rings and watches scratching the paint) all over the car and paint. I tell them, "it ain't your f@cking d!ck, get your hands off my car."
Politeness won't fix your car after they are gone-you get to live with the damage the rest of the time you own it.

As you all can tell, I am beyond fed up with people who don't respect my property. I, like you, grew up around cars and was taught to respect them and the owners. It really isn't that hard...much like a friend with a hot wife, leave it alone. Nothing good is going to come out of it....

I just had my car painted over the winter and now that the spring is finally here, I've been feeling kind of worried about taking it anywhere... this thread isn't helping with my paranoia at all!

When I first got my car a guy i know at my wifes work put his water cooler thermos on my hood. I mean this thing holds like 3 liters of water. I was pissed and my wife could see it. i asked him nice to take it off. He says its just a car. So i launched the stupid *** cooler across the parking lot and said its just a cooler

Hahahaha way to tell them! Unreal how some people just don't get it. One time I came out of my house to hear my camaro revving up higher and higher each time....turns out it was my own brother.....grrr was ready to kill him, then another time I got gas at a local gas station, came out to see my car missing, I was flipping out when I realized the owners son moved it to the side of the building to be a wise guy. Was the last time I ever left my keys in the car. His son doesn't think I have a sense of humor after I sprayed his gas pumps with gravel while laying some rubber/gravel spray. Lol

When you have a beautiful new paint job just expect to be in a different world than you were in. There's a before and after effect.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

This parking thing is soooooooo common throughout the world.
I usually park the car somewhere far off and away from the mainstream parkers and still there's someone parking next to me. most times on the left side, as close as possible, so I can't get in through my driver's side.
The ENTIRE lot can be empty, but that is the MOST desired parking spot in the WORLD! No dents so far, though.
At times I have to get in through the passenger's side and let the car drive out in reverse before getting out and switching sides.

I just take up 2 parking places in the back 40 everywhere i go. If we are at a restaurant where i dont have much of a choice i find the most expensive and well taken care of cars to park next to.

Just a car...... pshhhhhh

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I am the same way about my cars and bike. I park so far out it's not funny and will take up 2 spots-never do that close to a building. I hate door dings and such, Sure stone chips are going to happen, don't like it, but it happens, but you can try to pervent other damage. Yeah I hate the leaners, the setters, the touchers. A month or so ago I witnessed a hit and run so I called the police and filled out a report, the cop walks over to my car-thank God I was in the RS and not the new Jeep or TA and he about slames his big metal clip board thing on the metal part of my hatch to find me a pen. I was like good thing I have not done the body and paint work yet. Unless your a car guy I guess you will never get it, but I have even seen alot of car guys be very disrespectful to other's cars. Alor of people suck and we are not going to change that.

Haha theres some good stories in here.

SweetRevelation, I STRONGLY suggest ALWAYS having a good coat of wax over the car. I wax my car monthly, and that seems to save me from many scratches and nicks.

This is exactly what I try to do. It normally works, but then there's the times when I park next to a nice car, and when I come out the nice car is gone, and some huge POS managed to wedge into the lot.

When I'm out with the Sand Rail this always happens. Everyone loves to grab the bars and touch whatever. It happens when I'm talking to them or even when I'm not around. People even touch it at car shows. Its funny that they touch the buggy but won't dare touch the Chevelle parked next to it.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I found this after I got back from work last night... I intentionally park up the hill at my apartment complex where there's usually empty spots specifically to avoid any kind of parking lot damage anxiety...

Note: It's springtime and there's pollen and tree blossoms all over it, all of it from the last 2 days. Also, Im a little close to the line, yes, but I didnt care because no one usually parks up there.

I agree with all the above, some ppl are too stupid or just don't respect the time we have into our cars. I never touch a car at shows. I hate to come back to fingerprints. That van would have no windows if it was that close to my car

Isn't this people parking next to our nice car exactly what we are trying to avoid.
I could swear that is one of the biggest problems we are talking about.

The average person looks at a car and sees an appliance. They don't think there might be time/effort/money/passion invested in them. They will never get that our cars are our pride and joy simply because they may as well be looking at a really nice fridge or laundry machine. This is why my GTA is not my daily

I like jerkoffs like that idiot in the van. This is why I also carry a tube of lithium gresse with me. Alittle under the door handle fixes them.

Haha, it's the common little things in the world that brings us all together. The parking thing has happened to me as well so many times. Frustrating, but it's nice to kow I'm not alone!

The fear of rock chipping from oncoming cars also drives me crazy. It's come to the point I hold my breath every time I meet another driver on the highway! haha

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I saw this topic and instantly had flashbacks >_<

Back where I used to work, I would always park my previous car atop of the hill so no customers would hit the car. While working, I hear a loud "bang" sound. I didn't know what it was at the time, but when I got off work, I found that someone intentionally rammed the back end of my car with a STEEL grocery cart :/ Left the back bumper the nastiest gouge (wasn't just a scratch, the bumper actually had indentations from the impact). I was sad because I just waxed the car the day before.

The way I see it is, if people are jealous of a car, they'll do anything to get their marks on it. The worse part is, they WILL go out of their way to do such things, and things like that irk me to no end.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

This story is about the opposite of touching the car but it does pertain to new paint and is a rare event.

I was pulled over for speeding by Highway Patrol and I could not believe it when he said nice car did you just get it painted. Yes I did not more than a week ago. Then he said something I was not expecting. He said that's why I did not lean on it and I wont set my clip board on it. Love Camaros he said. It did not get me out of a 10 mile a hour over ticket though. I guess that's why he swung a U turn to get me in the middle of no where and the only car on the road. Wanted to take a closer look I guess.
As far as people touching the car Ive been lucky so far with only one small scratch from a guy loading lumber at the furthest parking spot I could find. I did not realise he did it until he was gone. My alarm system has a panic button that I have used from across the parking lot that gos ,chirp, chirp, if you touch it once and will usually keep people at a distance. If not there's the short siren burst. Any way here's the paint after 6 years of daily driving. =

I feel your pain ever since I got my car painted I don't feel safe leaving it anywhere. Luckily I got to put the first scratch on it myself that's suppose to be good luck, but I guess only time will tell

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I've had the same experience over and over in my life. I've been dragging my pregnant butt from the "back 40" of the parking lot all winter in an attempt to avoid any marks on my DD 2010 CTS. I had kept that car in PRISTINE condition for three years and then just a few weeks ago someone put a nice door ding in it.

Then, a few weeks ago I traded in the CTS (not because it was damaged as those who know me like to laugh) on a brand new loaded Buick Lacrosse - another very nice car for my DD. Before it even had 500 miles on it, I noticed a nice little door ding on the rear driver's door and a decently annoying scratch on the rear bumper. What is wrong with people?

The aforementioned cars are leases and DD's, so I can kind of dismiss those as other people's ignorance, however my 91 RS sustained a rather nasty scratch / gouge on the rear quarter just days before I parked it for the winter. It looks like a shopping cart was intentionally rammed into the side. Luckily it didn't dent it, but no matter how much I compound that area it's not coming out.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

Yup i got the same stories as everyone else. I got my car painted about 2 years ago or a little more. Still looks great today. Anyways i pull into a local mall with my GF and i proceed to park in the most far away area of the parking lot i can find with no cars. She just rolls her eyes but knows the drill at this point. When we get back some douche in a subaru outback parked right up next to me on my passenger side. I ended up having to back out so my gf could open the door enough to get in. I was so pissed. There are a ton of other spots why pick the one next to my car!!!

Oh and as far as parking across two spots i dont dare do that around here. Ive heard way too many stories of people being jerks and parking as close to that car as possible because they used two spots and not one. Stuff like that. Luckily i dont drive my car daily and it actually rarely leaves the garage. Just on nice days on the weekend basically.

Yeah that's a huge no-no Steve. I remember being a kid at Riverside Park and a CROWD of people pissed off about a dude who parked his vette like that. Those crazy bastards picked up his car and put it in one spot.

I was **** about mine for awhile. I still park it out of the way, rarely ever take it to a store or put it in a parking lot. The first scratch was across the bumper from someones splash shield letting go on the highway. Came off in 2 pieces. Dodged the first... didn't see the 2nd. Still gotta get the bumper cover repainted. Other than that... it's just money, and the car is an endless pit. It gets messed up too bad, I'll just have it done again in the off-season... (fingers crossed I won't have to).

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

Yep i feel everyone's pain! The Z28 does not get much road time so i have no story's of her but my Cadillac Seville..... I park as far as i can away from cars so i don't get any scratch's or dents and some how this ******* found his way next to my car. Well there was a ding in my passanger side door so i what happen next was. I had Jungle Combat Boots on from 1988 Spiked protected meaning there's metal in the shoes well i kick the guys door in and left a size 13 extra wide boot dent in his door. Then getting gas don't get me started! The Gas guys are dumb and leave the cap on the paint! I yell at them every time one does so. I use to be a gas guy and i never left the cap on the paint and i never touched a persons car. I'm lucky enough that the Gas station i worked at still lets me pump my own fuel. I don't trust anyone with my cars not friends, family no one.

Wow. You have full serve gas stations? I haven't seen those in at least 15 years aside from the one in the small town my grandmother lives in.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

Here's a trick that i have seen people with nice cars use. Take a corner spot in a parking lot then put a grocery cart on its side in the spot beside your car. The theory behind it is sound as people are too lazy to get out of there car to move the cart.

Or just pull in 2 spots diagonally at the end of the parking lot. Always works for me.
If the parking lot seems "full-ish" I will park elsewhere and walk. Not worth the aggravation and potential law suit

On another note, a paint marker and a note on the window can remind people to respect nice cars. Have a buddy that will write "I park too close to other people" across the front windshield if his cars personal space is violated in the parking lot. Obviously paint comes off of a windshield easy enough, it's still funny as hell.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I had a old 84 Ranger truck that I used as a daily driver and when I spotted a nice expensive car that was unprotected I would park next to it, but, not too close, to keep some idiot from damaging it. It makes me so sick to see beautiful cars damaged by carelessness and ignorance.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I know how you guys feel. About a month after my car was painted (2 years ago) I was at the mall. Parked away from people and everything. Didn't notice it until I got home as there was no one around me when I came out. But some idiot doomed my passenger door right on the body line and left a nice little chunk outta the paint. I was pissed and still am about it everytime I clean the car.
Kinda hard to do a touch up on a custom Color as well.
Car hasn't even seen 1000 miles in the last two years and stay in the garage under a tarp now.

I hate leaners and touchers. its hard to keep anything nice.

a week after my dad got his 72 nova painted, he got pulled over and the cop put his clip board on the hood. my dad threw the clip board down on the ground, and did not avoid a ticket that day lol

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

I recently bought a 88 Iroc. The paint on it is decent but it has its share of nicks and dents. I cant EXPLAIN how much easier it is to drive that thing compared to my 91 z with good paint. I can park the Iroc anywhere without worrying if its going to get nicked or dented. Sadly, thats a great feeling.

When the Iroc goes in for paint and body work next month, I'll be back to where I am now with the z28, at the VERY back of every parking lot.

Re: My quick, I hate having nice paint rant

This thread is giving me stress, LOL. Way before I owned my Z, I had a little black Geo Storm. My wife and I were traveling and we stopped at a Burger King for dinner on the way. You have to understand, I have OCD, and so I always ensure that my car is always centered and not a problem for whoever's parked next to me. We came out after eating and this idiot had parked so closely to me (I was centered, remember) that I couldn't get my door open more than six inches. I was furious. It was an old van, and my Geo, although nice, wasn't perfect, so after I climbed in through the passenger side, I shoved my door open as much as I could and left a nice dent in their van. It wasn't the nicest thing to do, but I was ticked. I don't know what I'll do if someone ever does that to my Z. Hoping I never find out.
