Factory looking double dinn bezel for Firebirds

Re: Factory looking double dinn bezel for Firebirds
I stopped working on the bezel, and released what I had done on Thingiverse here. It still does need a few more things. I stopped for a couple reasons:
1.) My build plate isn't big enough to print the whole thing in one piece. Could break it into two pieces, but meh.
2.) I don't own a Double Din radio to check fitment. Took all measurements off of the standard sizing
3.) Mostly Discouragement. One thing I hate are what I call "choosy purists". The people that want to mod a piece, and know that what THEY want to mod won't look factory, but are totally unhappy with anything else associated with the mod that is not an exact factory (or factory looking) piece. I understand being a purist, if you are going 100%, but if not then you can't argue with whats available or being made available.

As stated before, hawks has the factory bezel reproduced. The company that makes it already has the dimensions. The opening would be the only adjustment to that bezel needed.

Using the grid pattern as a template, the grey lines represent a 2-DIN cut-out. And the areas boxed within the black lines represent portions of the grid that should be eliminated from a factory-style 2-DIN repro so the grid matches the lines of the new opening, in the same way that the grid on the factory design matches the lines of the 1.5-DIN opening.
Radio fitment could be a problem, though. Without having a "standard" for mounting a 2-DIN radio, a wide variety of hacks are likely to be created. And because people rarely agree upon such things, it will be important that we come-up with an acceptable, simple modification.
It's true, obviously, that a 2-DIN radio isn't factory, but by having it installed behind factory trim, at least, such a radio will have the appearance of how it might've looked if GM had designed 3rdgens with 2-DIN radios, and we can blend-in some new-tech without making the interior look molested.

Another 2-3 years of 3d printing tech will make this thread obsolete, hopefully!

Agreed. If they can perfect the process for making whole automobiles, then small parts should be easy.

Re: Factory looking double dinn bezel for Firebirds
On my 1991, I had the shift plate and the switch pod sanded and painted flat black to match the double-din faceplate I ordered from DoubleD mods. I think the car looks much better without the Tron pattern. (I kept the grey on the sides of the switch pod.)

You like 3.1L Firebirds too instead of L98s, so your opinion is invalid. =p How far are you from Montgomery, AL? I'm stationed there now. You still in FL?
Why'd you move from San Antonio anyway?
The inside of my car is apart right now. I will take pictures of the parts (eventually) and get them to you.

Re: Factory looking double dinn bezel for Firebirds
I found this site recently because I want one for my car. I don't see the 3rd gen firebird one listed but I have a link to their site on my smart phone that I saved not long ago. I just emailed them to confirm availability.
