I guess I really just have one question, should I try to get another clear protective "sticker" like the one that is on there from the factory, or will I be ok just painting it and leaving it unprotected? I have had 2 verts and one of them did not have the sticker and it seemed ok.

I have been having a bitch of a time finding that clear plastic sticker. I would definatley recommend getting it, because it does protect the paint. Finding it is a bitch, but I know guys who have had new tops put on which came with that clear sticker too. Just gotta find out where they had it done!

My 'vert is missing that and the paint has suffered for it there. I'd like to find it too. I say you should definitely try to replace it if you can.

I am painting my tonneau cover and need to find out where to get the clear protective sticker that goes on the tonneau cover.

Hey,

We had our vert painted over a year ago and ran into the same problem trying to find the plastic.

So we opted for something a bit different.
They outlined where the plastic once was ans shot it with 6 coats of clearcoat and then feather sanded the edges to make a nice blend.

So we still have that raised edge and appearance of that plastic strip, but now it's made out of clearcoat. When ever it gets nasty on the clearcoat I just buff it and it comes right back to new.

If their is any interest or confusion I could try and post a pic this weekend sometime.

Just something to consider.

I'll try to get a picture up in the next couple of days. But I'll warn you in advance. The area where the top sits on the clearcoat has not been buffed in quite some time so it looks a tad icky.
I was going to wait until the weekend before I post a pic, but then I thought about it and I figure this way you'll see a dirty version and a clean version.

To make it plain and simple.....
I'll post two pics. #1 in the next few days to show you how the clearcoat looks. and #2 a cleaned up version of the same area using elbow grease not computer wizard type photoshop stuff.

I'm also going to the super Chevy Show in Pamona this Sunday and I'll be haeding to the camaro section first thing. If I see any verts out there that have been repainted and they have the plastic
in place I'll ask them where they got it.

Not going to show the car, it will just be gleaming in the parking lot.

So give me a day to jump outside before work to grab a picture with the digital camera and I'll post it. Then I'll post the difference by this weekend.

Got a part number from someone here and it has been changed. New number is 12520107 and price is 145.30 . That is too much for me. I will have one made somewhere

Ok, got some pics fer ya.

Pic # 1 was taken from the drivers side looking towards the passenger side. You can see the raised edge of the clear coat where they masked it off with tape to get the raised edge. Then they feather sanded the edge down a tad to give it more of a blended look.
You'll also notice the marks from the rubber piece from the top. These marks do buff out with a little elbow grease. And you really only need to do it twice a year. I've been using what I consider a soft wax, you might get better results with carnuba wax and it may take longer for the marks to show up.



Pic #2 is a top down look at the clear coat.
I tried to take a couple of different angles to give you an idea of how this looks.
Sorry for the bad pictures. I took these at 7am in the morning before I went to work and there was not much sun peeking over the house next to us.



And the final pic for right now.
This is with the top up or roof on so to speak.

Currently the paint is about 15 months old and I've had no problems with this area at all.



Well, that's the slide show for right now.
I'll do a clean up of the area this weekend and show or at least try to show you what it looks like buffed out.

Frankly I think clearcoat is the better alternative here. You can buff the clear coat again and again for a long time. Once the plastic starts to yellow it's history! Then you'll spend another chunk of change for the plastic and have the whole thing done vver again.

Just my 2 cents.
