Shaving antenna

I'm getting a paintjob anyway, so how hard would it be to take the antenna off during the process? What is the best way to cover the hole up? Does anyone know anything about a replacement 'hidden' antenna so I could still get radio stations?

Thanks, Doug

Go to this site....

www.dakotadigital.com

They have an antenna that has no external rod. You attach it to the interior of your car, probably in the rear hatch or at the top of the front winshield.

I'd just bring the car to a reputable body shop and have him fiberglass the hole over and sand it down to level. Make sure you go to someone who knows his crap though, or the patch will fall right off!

We shaved mine. Ended up welding a plate in and having it only slightly filled. More work, but it will last longer.

I think radioshack also sells a setup that goes along your windshield in your interior, used to have the part # but i think i lost it.. I also heard it has good reception, I plan on trying it.

Yeah they do. It looks like a clear piece of tape, with a tiny black line in the middle. I was gonna get one when I used to work there, but never got around to it.

I don't think you can get one w/o the hole. They are all stamped in when the fenders are made. If you used and aftermarket fiberglass fender it may not, but I don't know where you would get one. Plus, the body work needed on a fiberglass piece would make it quite labor intensive.

Just fill the hole in your fender. I think you would come out better in the long run. Its not that much work to fill one.

yeah take it to a bodyshop and get some quotes. should be around 300 or something inc paint. i had a friend who had the hidden antenna on the top of his windshield running horizontally. he caught stations just fine. when i shaved my antenna i just ripped the radio wire out and threw it all away. i cant stand radio

Cars that had factory radio delete, what did they do for the fender hole for the antenna?

the 1le's i've ever seen still had the antenna or at least the base, no camaro that your average consumer could buy came from the factory with a "shaved" antenna.

as far as the radio shack antenna, i went with that only because it is smaller as well as cheaper than any alternative out there. but, it only gets in the strongest signals and even still gets some bad reception........nothing like the stock antenna. you true best bet is to find a factory car that has a hidden antenna and try to duplicate it.

otherwise, unless your lucky reception sucks..........the price you pay to be different i guess.

call classic industries they have a right hand front fender listed for $192.00 and it says it doesn't have the pre-drilled hole for fixed antenna mast, and it says this in a couple of different places so i don't think it is a typo. It is also an original gm so none of that aftermarket crap. hope that helps.

AFRO IROC Z, Where did you see it for that price? I looked at the Classic Industries web page and it was $338. Doug

I am sorry i didn't notice you had a '91 Z, that price is for the 82-90 front fender. But that is in the catalog that i have. But i also checked for the price of the 82-90 fender on the site and it says 271.00. so the catalog i have must be old, but that is a pretty hefty increase in price almost a hundred bucks. Also in the catalog i have the price for your fender is 280.00. Seems they bumped their prices up quite a bit. Again i apologize for the mis-information, and will pay more attention to detail next time.

Well, I am liking the idea for a new fender more and more each minute. My old one has a small dent in it anyway, so I can kill 2 birds with one stone by getting a new one. Now i just gotta start saving more money....
