ok, everone on the east coast (specifically central NJ) knows about the crappy weather we had today. well i had school today and i was taking the snow off the car and my snow scrapper slipped and the corner hit and cracked the side view mirror. it looks like someone shot it with a BB. does anyone know if i can get a new mirror fabricated or do i have to buy a whole new assembly?

nice one...that doesnt beat my story of trying to pry my door open in icey weather and almost using a crow bar to get in when really i turned the key the wrong way and locked the door instead of unlocked it. but while your waiting for other responses give a local glass shop a call and ask them if they do it, then if not i would get one off a junker then paint it while its off the car.

ive got a cracked one doesnt bother me much but ....... at pep boys i saw a peice of glass in one section the same exact shape as our mirrors but im no sure on size looks like u just glue it on

you can prolly get another used mirror out of a junk yard and take it to a body shop and just have them switch the broken glass out for the good one from the junk yard piece. it will most likely be fairly cheap. it didnt scratch the paint on the mirror itself? oh yea and one more thing... please take the car home and park it until the snow goes away

its a PITA to get off, but you can get replacement glass and glue it on... poof, like new.



now I did a more bonehead thing lastnight.


i was parked close to my moms car in the driveway.. it was dark out... as i walk between her car and the passenger side of my car, i just walk square into the mirror of my car.

its now loose and i can wiggle it around every wich way... the entire mirror.

to be honest, i forgot about that until i read your post... i guess im taking apart a doorpanel to look at it this week....








at least its nice out... 65ish right now... and it doesnt snow here.

u think thats bad, when i had my first car in my frist winter with a 6 month old paint job i though u could use the scraper part to get ice off of the body, dont ask me what made me think it was designed to do this and not just windows! anyway i found a $hit load of lil scratches all over my car and hated my self for a long time lol

Of course you don't have a Canadian Tire but i found an aftermarket mirror replacement kit there with a glass sticker, just clean off the old glass or take it out and glue in the new piece. i forget the brand but there were several "applications" for cars this mirror fit and it was just over 10 bucks. Make sure you buy the driver or passenger side tho!

thanks for the help guys. i'm glad i'm not the only one who messes up one time or another. hmm, napa, autozone, etc for replacement glass? i've never seen them but i'll check. glass for the dealer? that's cool. i'll probably go there.

and to MRdude_1: i have first hand experience with a loose side view mirror because some jerkoff hit it and wouldn't fess up. as you suspect, you do have to pull of the door panel trim and the panel itself to get to the 2 bolts that keep it on and tight. good luck!

and to everyone on in NJ, keep that 'bird straight because it's easy to lose it out there.

I have experience with the side mirror too. When I had the 88 we had a deck in the front yard and one to the front door. There was just about the width of the car between them with 6" to spare (they were there long before the car, built when we had the Taurus). Anyway it was raining, I wasn't paying attention and CRUNCH snagged the driver's side mirror on the deckpost going 5mph and didn't realize it till I parked the car and saw the mirror kinda hanging. Then removing the body panel, the first I've ever done, I wasn't exactly sure how those tree like clips worked and ended up ripping the back of the door panel in a few places.

go to your local glass shop they should be able to cut you a piece right there like they did for me and put it on for you in about 10 minutes. They cut the glass. Tape it up, and you let it dry for a day. No biggie. Good luck

The mirror shouldn't be too big of a problem if it's just the glass. Follow all the suggestions here.

As for dumbass stories, two winters ago I shovelled the snow off my '84 Camaro with... a shovel. The scratches along the hood were spectacular.

ok well as long as we're sharing dumbass stories i got for ya, now unlike yall i live in texas so i have no where near the cold weather u do up there in NJ, bnut last winter i left school to find that it had iced and sleeted all day and all my windows were covered with ice and "snow" so i got in my car turn it on along with the front and rear defrosters, well i decided to go and scrape off the ice as it melted so i could get home quicker, well i had unfortnatly gotten a bad habit of locking my doors as i close them, so when i got out to scrape off the ice i ot locked out of my car while it was running, fortuantly i was able to call my dad within a resonably amount of time to get a spare key, i must say tho i felt really stupid

i was in texas(dallas) last winter when it iced over too..

i decided it would be fun to take out my motorcycle and do a lil ice racing in the cull-da-sac

well the house i was in had a very steep driveway. no problem getting down, but i couldnt get the bike back up the hill to park it.

eventually i parked it at the base of the driveway, and ran a garden hose... with the water running down the driveway, it eventually melted a trench.. and that trench was just wide enough to ride the bike up the driveway with..... must have looked funny.


oh and btw....




.... it was a sportbike.
