Speedo rewinding.

i have 4.10 gears in my trans am , the speedo is way off. It pisses me off cause the miles go up so fast . Well i disconnected it and the ses light comes on. Now i didnt think it would since its an 85 with a cable driven speedo. Now the question i have , can you rewind the speedo with no problems or will something happen like silver lines . I dont plan on selling the car but i want the miles low. I will keep the car forever but i just dont want the miles going up by 2 like they are.

other then taking it to a speedo shop willing to do the work, no, you cant "rewind" it.

all FI 3rdgens, and some carbed 3rdgens have a VSS... the cable operated cars have it on the back of the gauge cluster.

what will happen if i try to rewind it. I mean will it do it , or will silver lines show up between the numbers. I didnt know the car had vss. When it was disconnected the cruise control wouldnt work. Also , is thier a top speed limiter on the car .

i know it has a "void/tampered" responce.. i forget what it is though.

cruise on your car is electric.. so without the VSS it wont work.
if you had a earlier car (like my 82) the speedo cable would go from the trans, to this box underhood, and then from the box to the speedo.. that box underhood had its own VSS and electronics for the cruise control.

Well, you can't rewind the odometer miles, but you need to replace the speedometer gears with the correct ones for that gear ration, then the speedo will read correctly and the miles will be correct after that. But the extra miles you put on will have to stay.

or do what i did.... drive the car with the speedo disconnected sometimes. i put roughly 700 miles on my car like that when the VSS broke... and another 300 when i was waiting for my SGI box after the T56 swap...

but im making up for it right now... the SGI box is set where it was with the 2.73s, and i have 3.42s right now.... it all evens out in the end.

This thread is now closed. It is ILLEGAL to turn back an odometer, even if you plan on keeping the car forever.

TGO will not be part of ILLEGAL activity or discussion. I have taken the liberty to edit the posts that contain the "How-to's" of turning an odometer back.

I am not going to delete this thread, as I want others to be warned about this sort of discussion.

Questions? PM or email me.......................
