Questions about undercoating my car with POR-15..
Just have a few questions about undercoating my car with some POR-15. Id like to do this before my car gets put under its new car cover for winter, but i'm not sure what or how much i need. I know they sell a starter kit for like $15, and additional pints, quarts, gallons for added prices. My question is, what exactly do i need. I plan on doing basically just the undercarriage...or as much of it as is accessible with the car up on jackstands with all suspension components completely intact. Any tips on what and how much to buy and tips on applying would be GREATLY appricaited. Thanks...

i used it on my car. I used the clear POR15. I used 2 of the little cans but still had some left (i covered from around the y pipe to end of floorpans). Just paint it on, its pretty easy. I did a light sand of my floorpan rust and slathered it on...
here is after i sanded it
i dont have any pics of the por15, but here is the finished product

Alrite guys im thinking about getting a quart and the super starter kit. You think this would be enough to do alot of the accessible undercarriage and then the brake drums??
Also, what color should i get? Black or semi gloss black?? I know someone said that one of them made it look like a powder coating. I think i want that one.

uh i forget exactly what, youd have to check their website but it comes with brushes, some prepping stuff, enough POR-15 to do a 12 sq. ft area, and like i said some other stuff that i dont remember. Its only 15$ so i figure what the hell. I'm hoping thad and a quart of POR15 will be ample for what i plan to do.

I used POR-15 on the a-arms, springs, and rear axel (and a few other things). No need to worry about the POR wearing off--chances are, if you follow POR's directions, the coating will be present long after you've disposed of the car. A local body man once told me that undercoating wasn't always a good thing, that it could trap/hold road salt, etc. and actually promote rust. Whether that's true or not, I'm unsure, but I doubt you'll need anything more than an application of POR-15.

1. why are u on probation dan?
2. I have a few tiny tiny surface rust spots under my car. It was garaged all its life before we got it a few months ago so its in excellent shape. I think my dad said he saw about 2 little 1 inch by 1 inch spots on the bottom. But since its gonna be outside this winter i want to get a protective coating on the undercarriage.

sounds great!
i was looking at you avatar and it reminded me of eddie murphy on comedy central last night. I was some taping from the 80's or 90's (uncensored) and i remeber he was mocking italian people and he said "why dont you get in you little IROC Z28 and get out of here"...it was so funny. Camaro refrence by eddie murphy! Do italian people drive camaros? I didnt get that part....

Well dan since you seem to be a magnet for moderator attention...this topic will probably get locked for off topicness, but while we're on the subject of eddie murphy and camaros...
This weekend was like eddie murphy weekend on comedy central and they played beverly hills cop 1, beverly hills cop 2(from which my avator comes from), and golden child a few times each day..along with some standup. In BHC2 the bad guys drive a realllllllly nice black iroc (89-90) with rear louvers and black leather interior. They also drive a really nice black 1980 camaro.
Anyway, in order to ATTEMPT to stay ontopic, i will reiterate that i will get some pics when i do put the POR-15 on. Oh, almost forgot...Does anyone have any color reccommendations. I'm thinking about doing either black or semi gloss black...any opinions and/or suggestions?????

gloss black, no point in spending big $ on por-15 and get a crappy looking matte finish.
the starter kit only comes with enough metal ready and marine clean to use with the amount of por-15 you're getting (I assume).
I don't think the metal ready is all that crucial, as por-15 is supposed to adhere best to rust. Marine clean however is a WATER based degreaser... (I have only used castrol super clean, as an effective water based degreaser before...) they say that you should not use solvents (ie. petroleum based) degreasers to clean prior to por-15, so keep that in mind. Perhaps just get the por-15 and some marine clean, if it works as well as they say it does, then you'll have plenty of other uses for it (marine clean that is...)
Also, if you intend on just jacking up the car then painting, without removing things, you'll probably be disappointed... I was going to do the same thing, but there is so much in the way, it'd just be painted spots, and some things are easy to remove, so might as well...
Then a few things are a bit harder, but oh well, then a few more things are much harder etc etc.... and now my car has no exhaust, rear suspension, rear axle, and the fuel tank is coming down....

Sonix....I agree with you that you should remove as much as possible. But I def do not agree that you should not get metal ready.
I have POR-15ed my entire car's underbody, TWICE. And even once on the inside. 3 coats on the wheel wells.
Believe me cleaning the area is no big deal. Use whatever. Just rinse the ares well with rags and stuff. Then spray metal ready on....let it dray and the zinc phosphate will evaporate...leaving behind a layer of Zinc. This is what the POR-15 LOVES to stick to. Like Glue. When it touches it, it becomes almost like a tar feeling, almost.
I did all the work to mine with 1 gallon of POR-15 and 1 spray bottle of Metal READY. I have plenty of metal ready left over.
But I am out of POR-15. I used it on other things too.
If you wanna see what an entire undercaridge looks like and interior coated check out my site. There are a TON of pics and explenations.
If you wanna see some other part of the car let me know. I also did my moser 12 bolt in the stuff. I coated 1 side with the metal ready and forgot to on the other side. The side I did not coat doesn't look as well coated as the first. buy metal ready.

well this thread has encouraged me to get the starter kit as i really looked over the underbody of my car and i got a few spots of rust starting. I figure sence ill be driving the car this winter might as well get this thing protected while i still have nice weather!
Im gonna buy the starter kit as it says 12 sq ft. seems to be enough for what ill do...im gonna start out with the pinch welds front and rear bumpers then frame rails and then floorpans...ill see how much of the stuff im using then decide if ill buy more. I think i should be ok. I was gonna go ahead and get the flat black as i dont really wanna draw attention to my undercarrage. This will be a nice project for next weekend so i might take some pics when im done.
Oh and dan unlike creating a 4+ page of bs, crying for help, i need attention to install headers i actually fixed my oil leak and didnt make a big deal over it and feel the need to share. But thanks for wondering.

I am 100% sure he is all set.
Go for the undercoating. I used semigloss. check my site if you wanna see how it looks. It gets pretty shinny. hehe.

I plan on doing mine before it hits the road again. Ive used por 15 for a while now in all types of applications. I think the best bet would be to wirewheel everything you can to get it to stick and then if you want use the metal ready. I will be zinc phosphate washing my underbody, wirewheeling it clean and the putting 3 heavy coats on it. It also doing the engine bay as well but that will be blasted clean. I will be doing all of it with a spray gun though so itll look really good. Im also going with flat black as well.

lol, you guys are too much.
This stuff is supposed to be hammer tough, resisting chips and whatnot...how does it work against sheet metal thats kinda brittle because of rust?

I'd just get a gallon and do everything you can especially in the floor pans since those are high rust areas anyway. Both of my Iroc's are blessed to not have any rust inside or out. The only rust spot I've found on my project car was a dime size hole where the rear bumper bolts to the car about 2 inches to the left of it. I don't think you'll hear your floorboards crack with padding and carpet on one side until it's to late. So if there's any rust you can about guarantee its just as bad on the inside. You could order one of the por-15 six packs. just an idea

I got the starter kit to work on some rusted door seams. Pretty good product as far as prep and painting, no long term results yet. This kit has a really small can of paint, a 3 x 4 foot section would be stretching it. To do an undercarriage I'd think you'd need a good bit more. Surface prep is the key to a lasting finish for sure though.

i removed the whole front suspension, cleaned it as directed, installed new bushings, laid down two coats of por 15 frame coating and once i put a jack on the k member, the por 15 scraped right off down to the bare metal so you need to be careful with it
