My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

So I got this car about 2 weeks ago, havent even had to put gas in it yet, and its already parked in the garage and im tearing it down for paint and body work.

Its a 89 Camaro RS 305tbi and 5 speed, no real modifications. the passenger side fender was dented pretty bad, and the passenger side rear quarter has a huge dent in it. The rear bumper cover was cracked, and the hood has some nice dings and dent on it as well.

I started by replacing the fender, and then pounded the majority of the rear dent out from the inside. Got another bumper cover for it, and started sanding, and sanding.

I started to bondo work on the rear quarter, and my girlfriend wanted to give it a try. Well I went up town to grab some more sand paper, and when i got back there was a mess of bondo on the quarter. I asked what happened and she said it started gettin hard before I could get it all on. LOL
Well after doing a few other repairs I ran out of bondo. So here are a few pictures of it so far. I got lucky and have no real rust just a few spots here and there of minor surface rust.

The plans are, I gotta get the lights hooked back up so I can bring it to my shop and im gonna weld the antenna hole closed, im debating on shaving the corner markers in the fenders to. Im gonna be shaving the emblems on the bumper and the ground affects. Drip rails have been removed and probably gonna keep them off also.
Paint wise im going with Acrylic Enamel because Ive shot it before and had great results. Why change what works. I want to do a BC/CC paint but Im not gonna do it on this one. I have changed my mind on colors a thousand times in the last week. Im getting it from Restoration Shop, I was going to go with Hugger Orange and black mirrors, and ground affects, but then I like there Firemist Copper Metalic so Im not sure yet. Any input on a paint color would be great, I dont want 1 solid color though, I want to 2 tone it some way, there paint color are here if you all wanna take a look. http://www.tcpglobal.com/restorationshop/rspcolors.aspx

Other then that, the plan is kinda day by day. Let me know what you think and give input along the way.
Thanks...

Here it is when I got it.

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

most dont know but if you paint it with enamel and let it cure for 3 months and then block it down with 400 you can spray urethane clear over it

after 45 min dry time of the enamel you could spray urethane over enamel as well

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

Yea, it should have a nice shine to it, but I will probably shoot clear on it sometime...

Its not that big of a project to me. The last vehicle I bought was a 94 Explorer, and the rockers were totally gone. I filled what was left of them with foam, and fiberglassed over it, then a few more touch ups and I sprayed it Jet Black and sold it for 1600. I bought it for 200.
This is my life, what can I say. I love working on cars. It keeps me sane LOL.

Anyways I plan on having the body done this weekend, then im gonna shoot primer on it, and then get the paint ordered the following week. But who knows. Projects never go perfect. LOL

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

Here is a few more pictures to keep you all updated. I quit for the day. Put the tail light back on and went out and drove it... Camaro got its first spankin lol, pulled up next to a WRX STI I spun through 1st, and half of 2nd. I lost but make hella marks on the street..

Anyways heres the pictures. I keep putting filler on then sanding and putting more on and sanding again because I want it perfect so it takes time. Threw a pic of the motor in there to. Nothing special, and its gonna be removed after paint in favor of a 355 and TH350 trans.

Till next time..

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

Well I just couldnt stay away. I put in a little more work, got the driver side quarter done, and then started building a hood scoop out of cardboard. I think I might build one before I paint it. Wont be to hard, and it looks good in cardboard 4 3/4" high

What do you all think?

Since you mentioned Hugger Orange, check out the website below..

http://www.birdsandbowties.com/

Click on "custom paint" and then "88 Camaro drag car". I spoke to the guy that painted it a few days ago and he's very proud of it. It might help you make a decision.

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

I find it funny we are both burning a hole in our pockets at the same time, just different sides of the country. we even both have a 5.slow. As far as paint goes there is a poll on my thread it's basically a blue orange gray question and as of late the vote is orange. perfect paint is in the prep and prime take your time and have fun, we should have a little friendly competition as to the finished product, we both want perfection. anyways good luck.

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

Ohh man your all gonna get a kick outta this one. So when I started this I was trying out some new bondo I wasnt familar with and it never set right on the drivers side door, so I tried sanding it off with 80 grit and wasnt working so I brought out the big grinder with a wire wheel on it. I was tearing it off when I ran into some other bondo,
So I got a wrench and started tapping the door here and there. Well one part sounded like it was rock solid. So I jammed the wire wheel in there and it put a slice through the bondo 1" deep. WOW
I mean for what they spent on bondo and all the paint, they could have just got a better door.

Other than that not much progress but on the hood, and rear quarter still not good enough for me. Ive been waiting for Napa to get me 24" hand sander in.

i would suggest taking the whole car down to bare metal and THEN starting your body work.. that way you know what you have. your paint job will only be as good as what's underneath it and judging by that door.. i wouldn't take any chances. that's just me though.. it looks like you already have a lot of time into it. i just wanted to throw that out there.

good luck with your project.

The door and rear quarter are the only bad spots on the car. I havent messed with the door, Im just going to get another one. The quarter I made looks as good as possible but have a few leads on a new quarter panel as well.
I am finishing up a TH350 swap I just have to run the cooler lines and its ready to roll again, I decided to drive it till its starts getting a little bit colder, and then put it in the garage and do a complete teardown over the winter. That will give me time to pull the motor and get the engine bay cleaned up and so on.

For now im leaving it in gray and gonna have a little fun with it before winter

I'm liking it man, but I probably would have taken the spoiler off if your going to paint it black when the rest of the car is orange. sorry I didn't read the thread but are the gfx gonna be black too? that'd look killer!

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

I did take the spoiler off to paint the car. Then I painted it black, and the ground effects are going to be black, also im painting the inside of the headlight housing black to ya know on the bumper. The front corners are going to be smoked corners, and i am trying to find a set of those black headlights, I know they suck at night but It will really set the car off i think.
black door handles and locks also and im not sure if im going to paint the mirrors black or orange.

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

Here are some more pictures. Got the passenger side door together I think it looks good with the black mirror and handle. Im still waiting on this bozo with a cowl hood to reply.
I still gotta get the ground effects painted black, but I put them in place so you can get an idea of what it will look like. Also the turn signals in the front bumper I am going to paint black except an outline of a bowtie symbol.

Things left to do.
Cowl hood
Paint ground effects
Drivers door
Two black racing stripes
Put the interior back together
Paint bumpers
Bowtie in ftont turn signals

Anyone have a good way to lay out to stripes straight?

Yea I did, I was going to do a better job with real paint, but I decided I was more into getting it going down the strip, not trying to make a show car.
I had 15 cans, I sprayed while my girl shook another can, and I just kept spraying can after can to keep it all wet. Once it was done I let it sit overnight, and to my surprise It came out pretty good. In person you really cant tell it was rattled except the lack of coverage on the back bumper but thats not done yet. I was thinking ok well it will show in the sun. I pulled it out and I tell you the sun reflects off this like you wouldnt belive it hurts ur eyes to look at it.
All in all im happy with it, and thats all that counts. I liked this approach also cause touchups will be simple.

I also liked how the roof looks without the drip rail. Much cleaner in my opinion

dont feel too bad for putting your girl to work. I had my fiance block sanding with me for 2-3 days about 10 days before or wedding! i hate block sanding, she really really hates block sanding.

Re: My teardown and paint thread... 56K No No

She really didnt like the car when I first got it because it was stick. But after I swapped the TH350 into it she wants to drive it all over, so she didnt mind helping to get some new color on it.

Update, I just got another door put on, gotta fix on small dent, and paint it. About another week I say.

I will post pics later

I didnt realize the camera was set on close up shot. I didnt feel like going out to take em over...

Yes i know the back bumper still needs more paint, so does the drivers side of the car, Im waiting untill I get the door ready, then Im gonna wet sand the whole car, and put another coat on it.

What do you all think so far. The hood wont be black, Im still trying to get a cowl hood for it, if i dont find one by the time I paint the door, Im going to paint it to match the car, and still gotta lay out the two black stripes.

Only thing I dont like is I got street slicks on it now, and they are sticky all the time so when Im driving I can hear gravel being thrown up on the rear quarters.
