My body mod for my convertible *See post #54* (sexy spoiler inside)

First, this is why:

And this is what and how:

These spoilers are hollow fiberglass, and so when the ends were cut open I had to fill the void with expanding foam, and then fiberglass over it. I'm kind of skipping over most of the labor and will finish this post where I left off today.

The bondo step is about done, just needs a few scratches filled from the sand paper and the screw driver that the person I got it from apparently used on the top side of it.

Tomorrow I'm hoping to get it in primer and start filling holes on the trunk.

In your first pic "the why" - It's hardto see, but is that your original spoiler falling off?? How the heck did that happen?

Not that the spoiler your fabbing is bad (it's nice) - but you have a nice ride either way...just trying to figure out what you're up to......

It fell off at 120mph, not completely but enough to tear off one of the tabs holding it on. I had wanted to do this anyways so it was my cars way of talking to me.

I never would've though of the expansion foam... I had to fix a 91 TA spoiler and that probably would have kept it together.. Damn.

Re: My body mod for my convertible (sexy spoiler inside)

i would leave enough room on the ends to put some foam stripping under the spoiler at the quarter panel if you are not planning this already. the spoiler will flex over bumps and such and can chip the paint on the top of the quarter. Ask how i know

Nice! That will look good when done! Just one question.... Can you still open the hatch? It looks like the hatch will be in accesable.

It's only bolted to the trunk, it rests on the quarter panels but isnt bolted to them, so I can still use the trunk.

Re: My body mod for my convertible (sexy spoiler inside)

After using some high build primer, it looks good enough that after a very thin coat of filler and another coat of primer, it will be ready for some blue. There are just a few spots on the top that need to be filled still, but they are so minor it's not going to take much at all.

I think it will be finished next weekend, then I'll concentrate on the trunk lid.

I like that! One of my only issues with the verts is that GM never made an agressive rear spoiler for them! Looks like you have fixed that problem!

Re: My body mod for my convertible (sexy spoiler inside)

The paint code in the door jam is WA 9591.

It needs a very very small amount of bondo on the bottom edges of the center supports and then a few spots need to be dusted with primer then it's ready for paint. We also started on the trunk lid tonight too. We put fiberglass on the underside of the original holes and will be filling the rest of it tomorrow and sand it down and primer it. The whole thing is being repainted.

Looking great!

All that LSx hawspower tore your spoiler clean off!

Do you know if you're the first to put the high rise on a 'vert?

Keep it up!

No theres been quite a few that have done this, although ive only seem one that was like mine, molded to fit the quarter panels instead of trimming the quarter panels down to fit the spoiler.

Re: My body mod for my convertible (sexy spoiler inside)

BlueZee, I love the project! For non-vert Z28s, I go back and forth on if I like the high rise spoiler vs the 3 piece I have now. I have decided I will keep my 3 piece setup on mine. But that looks GREAT and even if other have done it, that is the first I've seen of one on a Vert!!

Re: My body mod for my convertible (sexy spoiler inside)

All of the extra holes in the trunk lid are filled with fiberglass, the tail light recessed area has been filled with expandable foam, fiberglass, and then bondo. It still needs a slim coat of bondo and it will be just right.

Unfortunately I ran out of time today, the plan is to get it in blue tomorrow though. Everything is ready to go just need to wet sand it real quick before it gets sprayed.

I want to see it painted too! Right now there's a gaping hole on the rear end of my car, I've NEVER had the trunk lid off my car before.

Finally some color! It's looking really good so far. There's a coat of clear on it now and tomorrow it'll get wet sanded and another one to two coats before it's sanded one last time, polished, and installed. The last coat(s) of clear will go on tomorrow and I plan to have it installed this coming weekend. The area where the tail light was you'd never know it was there

Semi-finished product. It wasn't bolted down here, we were just fitting the trunk lid back onto the car and wanted to set the spoiler on to see what we're working with. Should be done maybe this weekend. It's looking pretty good though!

Defiantly quality work, but its just not for me... just don't like how the high rise sits on top of the old spoiler, that added gap just kills the look for me... then again i realize you really dint have another choice.

would like to see it with the top down looking at it threw the windshield though, pretty sure that would look bad ***...

The alternative was trimming down the fins on the quarter panel caps which I wasn't going to do, plus I like how the way I did it gives it a deeper/taller look than if I had cut it down like others have done. To each his own, I'm thrilled with it

that's all that matter's... pretty amazing body work, and it probable looks better then the alternative... i do think it would look killer if there was away to attach the quarter panel caps to the new spoiler...

That would prevent me from being able to open the trunk. The quarter panel caps run all the way up to the back of the doors and are screwed/glued onto the quarters.

Re: My body mod for my convertible (sexy spoiler inside)

wish i had a vert to look at. never new those quarter panel caps ran all the way up to the back of the doors... this has me wondering what the rear end would look like with them taken off... would the back end look horrible with out them on? do they cover up a poor body line? lol this has me wondering what was the point of having them go all the way up to the door...

sorry if im getting this thread sidetrack, you dig an amazing job on the build!

They go all the way up to the doors because convertibles were originally ttop or hardtop cars and ASC cut off the roofs, so there's a gaping hole where the sail panel was. Honestly I think even if you were to remove the caps and fill/smooth over the holes where the roof was, it wouldn't look as good because the caps give the convertibles a crisp defined body line.

Here you can kinda see how they run all the way to the doors

Sorry to "renew" a somewhat old thread.... But I have to say, the finaly product and custom work looks OUTSTANDING! The way the quarter fins line up almost suggest GM had the idea in mind, but never did it.

Really cool!!

Thanks, it's still not completed though. I have to re-do the trunk lid because the fiberglass where the tail light was let go and cause the paint to lift up with it. I'm working on getting some metal welded in place to prevent this from happening again.

I promise good photos with my Canon Rebel after it's really completed.
