black on black
Ahh...It feels good to be posting, again. A couple months ago I sold my Camaro for a Honda to make it through college with, but I have recently received word that I will be on full scholarship next semester, paid for by the US Air Force. So I'm in the market for another IROC.
I have been thinking about getting one that's black on black, but I have reservations. I enjoy the color scheme, but am leary of the heat trapped inside after a day of sitting in a paking lot, especially during the summer. Is there a proven way to keep the interior cool even while in the sun?
I know tint helps (duh...), but beyond that, I'm kinda lost. I want t-tops as well. There are shades for those, correct? Is there anything I can put in the doors to keep heat out?

Oh geez. Come on it's bearable. Crack the windows a bit, buy a window shade, tint the windows, and the interior should be bearable enough to get in. Then roll down the windows all the way til the A/C catches up (if equipped).
At least AZ has dry heat, not this 100% humidity/100+degree crap we have here.
Actually, I just have to say, don't be a baby.. Just take heed: don't get an aluminum shift **** unless you'd like a mirrored B&M tattoo on your palm.

I have a black on black IROC myself and too be honest with you it doesn't get hot at all really. It can be 80 outside and my car doesn't get that bad. Here is the secret I have t-tops and 5% tint all around with no tint on the windshield. The t-tops make a HUGE difference as the car has a real tough time holding heat with a glass roof.. The tint also makes it nice and dim in the car so the sun doesn't heat anything up. On top of that it looks pretty damn sweet!

I took the picture myself so the quality is horrible

When you get in your car, just pop the hatch for and open it up all the way for about 30 seconds, you can actually SEE the heat come out and feel it hit you. Then jump in your car and it will be the same temperature inside it as the air temperature is outside.

Alright. How about this? In the winter I'd like to trap as much heat in the car as possible for obvious reasons. Having t-tops and the like will only allow heat out like we've shown in the above replies.
Is there an insulation-type material I can out in my doors to keep heat out during the summer and heat in during the winter? We can do it with a home. Why not a Camaro?

Mine's black on black, and Chicago's got the worst combo of winters and summers. It's perfectly bearable in the summer, and holds heat great in the winter. If it's sunny out, even in my "at school -20 on the plains not counting wind chill driving" mode, I don't turn the heat on.

I AGREE WITH "RENO". I LIVE NEAR CHICAGO TOO AND WINTER/SUMMER ARE HARSH IN EACH DIRECTION. I ALSO HAVE LEATHER SEATS AND NO COMPLAINTS. I ONCE HAD A NEW YORKER WITH LEATHER, BLACK CAR WITH NO TINT AND EVERYONE COMPLAINED. GET THE LIMO BLACK FOR THE BACK AND THAT WILL HELP A LOT PLUS IT WILL PROVIDE VISUAL SECURITY OF A LOT OF THE INTERIOR. I ALSO HAVE A TINT THAT CAME WITH MY TEE TOPS SO IT IS HARD TO SEE IN MY CAR YET COOL/WARM DEPENDING ON THE SEASON. BESIDE ALL THAT PUT A TINTED BLACK CAR NEXT TO ONE THAT IS NOT AND THE DIFFERENCE IS OBVIOUS.

you can get the t-tops shades or whatever they are called. If you are worried about the cold put some insulation between the shade and them. Also they make an aluminum backed insulation. You may be able to put that inside the doors to help. It will keep the heat out or in which ever you want. I think mainly it is used on floors and firewalls but it should work.

You boys are funny, ya know that? "Chicago has the heat/cool extremes"???????
You don't know what heat is till you've lived through a Texas summer. It was 100+ for 21 straight days and we went with out rain for just shy of 3 months. no, it doesn't freeze too often, and I've seen it snow all of ten times in all my 21 years. But I know heat, and in a black on black car (which, i have) it's not all that bad. Like above, crack the windows (tinted) and have a windshield screen. You'll survive. my daily driver is also black/black.

I have a blue RS with black / grey interior... I'm glad I got the windows tinted (5% on the side windows, 15% on the back window) - it's helped a lot, but it's till hotter than hell in my car during the summer until the air catches up...
Hot heat still isn't fun - right now I live in Santa Clarita, CA and I lived in Las Vegas for a summer with this car - the heat was not fun....

Don't even think about buying a black car in Southern Arizona. Take a look around while you're driving around sometime. Notice the absence of black cars? There's a reason.
If you don't live in Phoenix or Tucson, you cannot comprehend how hot a car gets, exterior and interior. The exterior is so not you cannot touch it, while the interior temperature will reach 180+ degrees -- hot enough to where you cannot keep your hands on the steering wheel or shifter ****. It helps a little if you tint the windows and cover the windsheild, but it's still not enough.
I live in Tucson, where it's not quite as hot as Phoenix. I owned a black 1984 Camaro years ago. Believe me when I say the A/C will never get it cool enough after getting in a parked car, even with the blower at high speed. I sold the car after only one summer. Today, I own a white Camaro. The difference between a light and dark colored car is like day and night.
Do you recall in 1990 when the temp hit 122 in Phoenix? They had to close Sky Harbor because planes could not get enough lift due to the "thinned" air. And the argument that we have "dry" heat is not valid in this case -- 100 degrees and 70 percent humidity vs. 100 degrees and 7 percent humidity will yield the same results on a car. So unless you've lived in desert climates, it is hard to comprehend how hot the car really gets.
Just notice how many black cars you see in Tempe/Phoenix. Very rare. This is the reason.
