Auto Meter guages into camaro?

Hi all,

I have a 1984 Z28 with the stupid 85 mph speedo and was wondering if it was possible to put the auto meter tach and speedo into the camaro. What size guages are they? They are offered in 3 3/4 and 5 inches i think.

Thanks for your help

You can put an autometer Speedo in there but I think you can only use the 3.25 inch one. I have the speedo, tach and 4 gauges in my 82 firebird. I had to make a gague panel out of plexi glass and I had to get a new speedometer cable because the stock one won't fit the fitting on the back of the Autometer. I cut the old panel to fit the new panel an d painted it black on the bakc side so it looks real sharp. ANy questions then email me.

Yes its possible to put Autometer gauges in your car. I have a 84 Camaro and I replaced all of the factroy gauges with Autometer Ultra-Lite gauges. The aftermarket gauges won't fit in the factory panel so you will have to fabricate a new panel and run some additional wires for the new gauges. If you have any questions send me an email at jbenge@hotmail.com

heres a picture of my gauges

I installed all Phantom Gauges into my 86 IROC. I had a hard time finding someone to sell me the ABS plastic to make a new dash plate and I also made an add on gauge panel for the remainder of the gauges I wanted to install. It gets expensive doing this, but I think it is well worth it.

For all you guys who installed autometer's in your car.... what did you do with all the electronic stuffs. Isn't there some kind of sensor that the cpu needs from that cluster?
I want to install Phantom's as well but was too confused about the electronics.

I just left the VSS out. I don't think it made any difference. I didn't get a Checkengine light because the computer isn't hooked up to the engine

My car doesn't have a computer anymore so I don't know if there is any issues about vehicle speed sensors. My car is an 84 so I don't think it had anything like that anyway but it may be different for those of you who have newer fuel injected thirdgens.

I also like the stock look but after seeing those setups I am a changed man. I wish I knew how to do that stuff. Mad props to you guys, great job! Now you've got me thinking about how much I want to spend on new gauges.

FBODY-ADDICT, The gauges in the pod are just regular autometer gauges, the pod doesn't require special gauges. I bought the pod from autometer and it comes with all the stuff to mount the guages on the pod.

hey valu8or, where did you find the ABS plastic? also is your car carbed or FI? Because i notice the air/fuel ratio gauge on your dash and I couldnt get mine to work e/ the carb. I just connected the gauge wire right to the O2 and it got no reading

I finally found a sales man at a local plastic company who wasn't an A$$. I bought a 4x8 sheet of .19 ABS for $25.00. I made about 10 different models (out of wood) for the dash using the old one as starting point. It only took two times to make the plastic one. I also fabricated a plastic portion for under the dash vents and above the radio for the rest of the gauges. I am still working on the final one for that though. I will attach the photo for that at the end of this message. As for the o2 sensor, I had to purchase the Autometer one. I took all of the computer crap off the motor when I built it and had the o2 bung welded to the header cross pipe. I do not know it the stock one would have worked because all of that stuff was thrown away when I tore it out. I also have a switch below the speedometer to turn off the o2 gauge if I do not want it to annoy me. The gauges in the aux panel are water temp, trans temp, oil temp, volts and oil pressure. It was the only way I could fit the gauges I wanted without using the pillar pod. I do have aa Autometer 2 gauge pillar pod which I did not use if anyone is interested in buying it. Let me know. Maybe after I get everything done perfectly I will post more photos and maybe write a tech article. It won't be for a while though, I am slammed with work right now.
