spray painting my door jams. what primer??

My 89 is white (and looks terrible) I'm going to paint it GTO cosmo purple. I had a local paint shop load me up a spray can to do the jams. I pulled the door off and removed everything in the way. I scuffed the jams real good with scotchbright. Now here is the question. I'm half tempted to just lay the color down, but I feel I should prime it or seal it prior to color so it has a nice uniform layer to adhear to. I don't want to have to sand the entire jam again before paint so can I get some primer/sealer (spray can) and then shoot the color over that? I'm just trying to save time here. This isn't gonna be a show car but I want to do a good job.

On mine i sanded and primered it to black, then sprayed the original color, with a couple coats of clear, hell man, you could play around with different ways and see what you think looks best.

P.s. forums been kind of slow recently lol.

Re: spray painting my door jams. what primer??

i was mainly wondering if primer/sealer would stick to the old preped paint and be a good surface to lay my color? If I sprayed it with primer/sealer I could just let it flash dry and put my color down right? Or would it look like ****?

what did you sand the primer with before paint? How much time did you spend on sanding them

Re: spray painting my door jams. what primer??

probably spent an hour or two hand sanding the entire jambs on this particular car, after sanding, i just laid down primmer let the primmer dry for a few hours (colder weather) then i painted, laid 3 light coats with a 10 minute flash time in-between coats, then laid slightly heavy coats till i got the right build up.

Yeah i didn't sand the primmer just laid paint on top of it. You can use what ever, sealer is a safety if your worrid about **** showing up, but if you have a oem surface just a good primmer will work stick with the same brands... i would encourage you to sand rather then use a pad, iv seen and delt with a lot of **** poor jamb jobs because people are to lazy to spend the time to get all the edges, curves, corners etc. Its all ways the prep work that leads to a nice paint job.

This is very true, primer should be wet snaded when on the outter body, but for the jams on a non show car I say sand them down-not too far, prime 1-2 costs let dry for a few hours then lay the color, once the color has cured you could always wet sand and polish if you feel they are not to your liking. If your not going to wet sand the primer then make sure you lay it nice and even, a few thin coats even, but get good coverage. I would not lay the color over the original paint unless it was a flat or satin color and even then IDK about that.

Re: spray painting my door jams. what primer??

sounds good. I have some duplicolor high build I can shoot them with. I'll see how smooth it is when it dries then sand accordingly.

Yeah high build is just that-kinda like thin liquid bondo so unless you want to sand you might want to pick up more a sealer/primer.

Re: spray painting my door jams. what primer??

On one of my other thirdgens jambs, i spent a few days sanding and fixing the imperfections, i laid down etching primmer, sealer, high build and knocked down about 95% of the high build... Much more elaborate.

Re: spray painting my door jams. what primer??

Probably best off sanding/scuffing it down thoroughly. If you don't get it down to metal, I would apply a sealer that closely resembles your base color and roll with the color and then clear. Sealer is smart when you are changing colors, will use less base in the long run.
