Help me design a high quality system
Ok guys, this is a system for my 2000 s-10. What I'm looking for is a very high sound quality setup, with a good full range of sound. The setup in the truck now is the stock speakers, 4x6 in the dash, 6.5 in the doors, and 4x10s in the rear pillars. The head unit is a sony cdx-mp30. The truck has the stock 100 amp alternator so I dont think that will be a problem.
I've got an aura MR-675H amp, which is a 6x50 rms amp with .08& THD at 1khz. I got a good deal on this amp a while back, is it at least decent in performance and quality? I dont plan on buying a new one now. I'm going to run the dash and door speaker on 4 of the channels and bridge the other two to drive a sub. I'm looking at a JL 10W0 for the sub. I'm not going to run the rear speakers.
I need reccomendations on what to do for the 4 front speakers. What I'm thinking is running single element mids in the doors and then a 4x6 plate in the dash. Not having a tweeter in the doors will help bring up the sound stage, and also my leg tends to block the highs from the drivers door. I need reccomendations on brands for these speakers.
I'd like to put some additional sound damping on the floors and up the firewall to make the ride quieter. Engine noise is more of a problem then road noise. I've heard you can use icegaurd for this but has anyone here actually done this? What the current prices for dynomat?

Forgot to mention, I've got an Infinity 6.5" component set that I've got in another car now, what do you think about using that for the doors and putting the tweeters in the dash? I think I'd get better sound using 6.5" mids in the doors and then a 4x6 plate in the dash.

You really want to keep you mids and tweets close to each other. I would recommend kick panels. And if you go that route, you dont want to run any speakers in the dash. I wouldn't really want to put good speakers in the doors either. Speakers in the door tend to get beat up from the door being slammed and water leaking in.

I should mention that I really want this to be stealth with the exception of the in dash. I go to school in the ghetto and i dont want all my stuff ripped off. I've got a mental design for a stealth sub box that will hide the amp as well.
So you think it would be better to go with 2-ways in the doors and plates in the dash then? I'm sure my brother wouldnt mind still having the component set in his car.

I would agree with the kicks. They are the best option....check out the Q-forms, they are a good affordable way to get much better imaging. Custom kicks can be made to where it is fairly spealth, as in they won't draw attention, but can be seen.

Raammat sticks better than Dynamat Xtreme and is A LOT cheaper. The only reason to use dynamat is if your sponsored by them, otherwise your blowing a lot of money.

Definitly no tweets on the dash, or even dash speakers, the kicks are the way to go. The reason is simply time alignment and path length. Think of it this way... When you listen to your home stereo, do you pull your listening chair closer to one speaker, or do you try to more or less center it between the speakers? As it is in the home for good sound, so it is in a car and that is why the dashboard is always a poor choice for speakers. In the dash, the left speaker is much closer to you than the right, and that causes poor imaging, and serious in your face trebel response, especially if you mount the tweeters from a component set there. I won't even get into the problems with phasing with this type of set up, and what that can do to image and sound quality.
By mounting the drivers low in the kick panels, or at least the doors, you are coming closer to an equal path length between the left and right speakers. This will result in much better sound, as well as better imaging. Having a driver (even a tweeter) partially blocked by your leg is not as big a deal for SQ as some would have you imagine. Mounting the tweeter in a spot that is for the most part not blocked, however, is better, as long as it's within about 6" or so of the mid bass speaker. Hope this helps.

Very good post coalyard. I agree completly with everything you said. Imaging is the key to a good sounding system. Kickpanel speakers is the way to go, since there is no way to have perfect imaging in a car, unless you had a middle seat, so by moving the speakers farther away from you it puts you more "in the middle."
