Alpine amp question

Hi, I have a problem. I just got a used Alpine F352 amp. How big of a sub can I run off the 5th channel. Can I run 2 10"s? How about one 12"? Two 12"s? There are no ratings anywear on the amp, Anybody have a website or link where I can find some info? Thanks in advance for the help-Mike

A little google search revealeved this:
Alpine MRV-F352 5-Channel Amp 40x4 and 120x1

No claims to it's accuracy though, but it sounds reasonable.

depending on the which subs you pick you need to decide on how you are going to use the total rms it doesnt really come down to what you can push so much as it it comes down to using the avalable power to drive the motor of the subs alpine has the e s r and x type subs depending on the output of the 5th channel i can give you a rough estimate of what would hit or you using a ported or sealed enclosure that will have a major effect on what you want in the end

Well, I am leaning towards the Kenwoods as the price is right. (2 for the price of one) I really need to know if the amp will drive these. Or I could buy a better amp down the road. I have one of the old 10s hooked up to it now and it works alright. The amp only has one set of connections for the subs. Do I hook both 10s up to the one set of terminals? I shorted one of the tens and it took out my old amp, A JVC GT400. It was hooked up with the 10s being run off of channels 3 and 4 on the amp. The rear speakers were on channels 1 and 2, The front speakers were not amped. It had an old Pioneer head with a Jensen Graphic equalizer mounted to the side of the console. The car has four Rockford Fosgate speakers. I ditched the head for a RF 9220 (on sale for $209 installed). pulled the G.E. out and tossed it. All this stuff is ten or fifteen years old. I recently bought a 1988 convertable iroc and this was in there from the first owner. The car is sweet-70K miles and I want a nice system but not anything over the top. I am also trying to do this with a minimum of drilling and cutting (nothing too permanant) Set me straight here guys as I am not a stereo guy and I do have a budget.-Mike

Whew! Type E, Type R. What does that mean? I was going to grab a set of Rockford Punch subs-10" 800W w/ 8 ohms-Whatever that means? I stopped though because I thought I might be going wrong. I thought I would ask you guys somemore questions.

1. What is this type E-R stuff?

2. What is with that ohm crap?

3. Do subs blow? I took out my last amp when one of the power leads on my current subs broke free and was touching the chassis of the sub. This was due to the last owner breaking the mounting tab and fixing it with Permatex I did some two part epoxy and I was thinking it might still be good. No? They are Pioneer 10" 700w 2 ohm. They say "Pioneer" on the cone and then "JSP" or "IJP" or some crap in big blue letters. Worth saving or replacing?

4. The enclosure, there is one in the cargo compartment. I was going to rebuild it or make my own. I'm pretty handy like that

5. Thank you! especialy you LT. I know tons about motors and cams and that stuff but stereo? I am lost or I would be without you guys

Where in Jersey are you? I'll help set you up with your stereo if you want, ohms are the resistance values of the speakers.. 8 ohm speakers are commonly used in your home systems, 4 ohm used in the car but depending on how you wire them you can use 8 ohm in the car for 120 watts your best bet would be a single 12" speaker or 2 10's in a ported box, but a lot depends on the sound you're looking for. I run a single 10 and the sound is great, 2 10's wouldn't help much for the sound for the music I listen to.

Okay, It ohm 'd out good. I hooked it up and it works. I didn't put them both together (the 2 subs) The subs are Pioneer IIMP, they are rated at 4 ohms each and my new amp is rated for a max of 4 ohms. This according to the link that was posted. Should I hook it up and give it a try or I am asking for trouble?

LT, I was checking out your car, I hit the little garage icon at the bottom of the posting. Dude, you really went nuts with the Diamond Audio stuff! Everything you have is Alpine or Diamond. I will take your advice and start banging around on ebay. What kind of music is this suited for? Will it be compatable with my Death metal, Glam, Wanna-be-punk, White rap Degenerate Long-hair Dirtbag rock?

Okay, I went to my stereo shop and called Alpine's tech line. Here is where I'm at: I have my 2 10 inch pioneer subs hooked up to the amp, Wired in series as the max. load on the amp is 4 ohms and the subs are 4 ohms each.

Alpine told me for best sound to buy one large 4 ohms sub OR 2 10" or 12" 8 ohm subs and wire them in parellel. I am leaning toward 2 10" subs but it is difficult to find quality brands that make an 8 ohm sub. Any thoughts on this?-Mike

Hey, I'm back. I have my two 4 ohm subs wired in series, This has not worked well. It sounds like crap and when I turn it up high I was smelling a burning/smokey aroma. I rewired just the single sub and it sound O-K. I want to run two subs though. Can I wire two 8 ohm subs in parellel? Help me out here guys! this thread has 15 posts but 150 hits! jump in here so I know what to buy.-Mike

hey mike.. I'll be honest with you and say I've only read the first 10 or so posts..

if I were you I would buy two subs that are 2ohm dual voice coil, this way you can wire both subs together and end up with a 2ohm mono load for your mono block sub amp (5th channel). what that means is you will maximize the power output of your amp. (by having a final 2ohm mono load to your amp)

if your having problems or questions, feel free to pm me.

Re: Alpine amp question

I have this same amp and have been running two 10" MTX Subs for well over ten years and it has worked just fine. Only problem is that if you plan on running it at high volumes for a sustained period make sure it has ventilation to it. (When it gets hot, and very hot it will get! Try to touch it after hammering for a couple hrs!) It has a built in protection feature that shuts it down, but after a few minutes it will come back on.
