What 4x6's fit?
Getting ready to buy a system for my 1984 trans am and I was wondering what 4x6's will fit in the dash with no mods...I have read other thread where people said some speakers will not clear the gauge cluster pod so before I make the mistake of buying something that wont fit I am doing my homework.
Ps: Something I am realy wanting to put in there are the polk/momo MMC 4x6 plate speakers...does anyone know if they fit?

i only know camaro's had probs i have no idea for firebirds , would check out crutchfield.com's site and use them to find if the firebirds and camaro
's mounting depth is the same , and as for playe speakers i am running infinity 4x6 plates in my camaro and i did nothing to them and its an 89 i heard it was i think 92-92 camaro's that had the mounting probs

If they will fit in the camaro I see no reason why they would not fit in a firebird? I would be interested in the infinity's as well they would do just fine...do you have a model number? I checked out crutchfield and they said some pioneer and a kenwood would fit but I think many other speakers would fit as well.

The driver side has issues with the depth and size of the magnet on the firebird also. As stated above go to cruchfield and see what they offer. You also have the option of round speakers with adapter plates which they provide if you buy from them.

Re: What 4x6's fit?
I have a pair of the pioneer 4x6's in my car now. The drivers side didn't quite fit, I just took a little box cutter to shave off a little bit of plastic, so the magnet would clear. The speakers I took out were kenwoods, they were in there with no modifications, but they must've been in the car for at least 18 years, so I can't say anything about new ones. BTW these speakers were in my 87, it's possible the dash is different because of the electric gauges and whatnot, i don't know.
I've heard people say on here that you can get a 5.25 inch speaker to fit in there. You could probably find it with a search (if it's working that is). I don't know why you don't want to do modifications, but it would probably be well worth it to have 5.25 inch speaker in there over a 4x6.
If the infinities are the ones I remember that have the woofer and tweeter separate, I can't say for sure, but I would think you would have to cut quite a bit off because the magnet isn't centered.

Re: What 4x6's fit?
If I can buy some adapter plates to fit 5.25" speakers that would be great then I would run component speakers and mount my tweeters in the windshield pillars...I am just not to keen on the idea of cutting up my car and I dont want to mount pods in the kick panel.

Re: What 4x6's fit?
You might want to take the dash pad off and see what kind of room is under there for a 5.25 inch speaker. I did a search and didn't find anything specific, only that it's been done. I'd imagine the passenger side wouldn't give you any problems. I didn't take that close of a look at it when I installed my pioneers (they're only temporary, I don't even have a CD player in it yet, lol), but it think the only problem on the drivers side is a skinny flap of plastic that gets in the way. I would think you could cut it away, sand off the edges a little bit and not even be able to tell anything has been done to it.
As far as mounting them, it's possible that people use them because they are the same length as the 4x6's because they would probably be pretty close. If they don't, a small piece of steel or whatever to get it to the mounting point would probably be all you need.
I hope that helps some, I'm just trying to give you some more options because as far as I remember there really isn't anything to cutting away the plastic, it's nothing important or noticeable at all.

Re: What 4x6's fit?
You might wanna try running a cross over on thos.. they can handle the power, just not the bass- i blew countless speakers bfor i figured that out.. Back to topic; With my firebird anything will fit on the passenger side up front, but nothing will fit on the drivers side, i mean nothing unless its close to stock. id like to find the engineer that had the vent ducting moulded around the speaker magnet just to pat him/her on the back for a job well done i am not one for hacking at all but since i bought a set of boston 746 4x6 plates i stared at the hole where the speaker was n jus deduced that nothing aftermarket will fit in there ne how n hacked it up with a heat gun n box cutter. I am not happy with myself but i had no choice...
