Power antenna.

All,

I have a 91 z28, that didnt come with a power antenna. I would like to add one, but after researching the factory ones going for 120.00+ i think i could spend my money better elsewhere.

My question is simply this, is there an aftermarket power antenna that is out there that is cheaper than the factory, say 35-45 bucks, that will work, without having to cut the subframe of the car under the fender and without any real modification?

The factory power antenna has a longer shaft than the standard one we get from advance, thus using the one from advance you have to cut a lot of the sub framing away from under the fender just to get it to work.. I want to not have to do that. In fact, I'd prefer to not cut anything, but i just cant bring myself to spend 120.00 + for.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks.
-Steve

Re: Power antenna.

not really. i work at a stereo shop, most of the ones that we sell we get for around 75-80 for the good ones. the cheaper ones wont last. sometimes you can find ones at a junkyard from a newer honda or something, and make it work.

Re: Power antenna.

I was afraid of that. Ive put one of those generic antennas in a GTA before, but i had to cut a crapload out from the inner fender subframe, and i really dont want to have to do that agian. I was hoping that there was a aftermarket antenna with a long shaft, for apps like this.. shame.

Re: Power antenna.

As Fast91RS stated those cheaper power antennas don't hold up well.My '83 Z28 came with a power antenna that wasn't working when I got her(missing extension shaft and the motor was shorted).I got lucky and another member(DavesIROC of ThirdGeneration USA)had a good used one in stock. But before I bought this one I had bought a couple different ones to try.The rear mount antenna from a '88-'91 Bonneville/88/Lesabre is very close. But in the long run it was better to find a good used F-Body antenna or the universal version you can buy from Modern Day(this is what's also available from GM).

Re: Power antenna.

Here is what I did to remedy the inner fender subframe problem. I took a piece of pvc tube and put it on the tip/top of the antenna. I only put enough to "make up the difference" of the tip and the hole in the fender. Once the antenna was bolted in, I made sure the pvc tube was bolted solid in place (so it wouldn't move around) and thats it. So when I set my headunit to radio, the antenna raises up perfectly every time. Honestly, the only reason I installed an antenna is to go to the Drive-In (Big Mo)
