Sub Box

Has any one used the sub box that fits in the rear tire well? I'm looking to put my two kicker 12's in my 1986 Z-28 and i want to know what people think of the box.

Re: Sub Box

Careful with the gains on the amp with the 12's. Last time I put two 12's in the trunk I blew the back window

thats the worst advice ive ever heard.. #1 you set your gains to get the kind of wattage you want sent to your subs.,. #2 you didnt blow your back window because of your subs.. maybe if it was already cracked you could have cracked it more, but that i even doubt

Re: Sub Box

you would need a lot more than 2 12" to do that. You would need.. well. prior damage

Re: Sub Box

exactly what i said.. you would need a crack. and even that, youd probably just make the crack bigger, not break the entire window

Re: Sub Box

I've had 12's in mine for years, and never experienced any type of damage to the rear glass or really anything on the car.

The glass most likely blew out because of prior damage, or some other event but not because of the 12's

Re: Sub Box

thank you.. your not breaking the hatch window with 12s im sorry to let you that.. unless you have a crack it will make the crack bigger, MAY break the back window which i highly highly doubt

I would get a box built to match the specs of your subs.

Also a lot of the times those prefab ones are made pretty crappy too, I've noticed a lot times they don't use 3/4 MDF.

Re: Sub Box

The premade box is pretty good except if you have t-tops and still want to store them.

The best advice on here is to get a box made to your setup. Enough space for the subs to breath and flex properly.

Re: Sub Box

If you have any skill, and time, make it yourself. I'm not that great and I managed one that is custom fit, built from quality parts, and properly wire for less than $50 in parts. Plus the knowledge that I did it myself is nice.
Also, you can use a spacer to still fit the T-Tops in (if you have them).

Re: Sub Box

I used a set of measurments from a PDF file found on this site I have it and can email it if you are interested in it. This is what mine turned out like and I have 2 12's in my hatch and always have and never had a problem with my windows. I made a thread dedicated to my sub box build or you can see all the pictures in my cardomain link in my signiture.

LOVE the black and red BTW (I also have red interior and covered my box in black) I also almost used vinyl like you did but covered it in felt instead...

I can email it to you if you'd like me too the file is too big to post but someone at one time did get it to post. I found it by searching these threads for hours it is barried in one of them. I will try to downsize it to get it to post but in the meantime just give me your email and ill send it right over.

I will say tho these plans are to make the sub well box! It makes a box to fit perfectly in the well, you will have to cut and measure your own top. I chose to make mine cover the whole area and not just the box to give it the custom look and design. If you have any questions please let me know I love car audio and love seeing things like this come together.

heres the thread that it is posted in I did find one that I was able to post it up.

Re: Sub Box

Yea its quite easy with basic knowledge and the right tools. My cost was right around $60 all you need is: 1 sheet of 3/4 MDF box of screws some liquid nail and a covering (I used felt) but vinyl and carpet would work too.

That PDF file was the set of plans that I used to follow to build my box, if you look at my cardomain you can see pictures of the whole build, but is there anything specific you are looking for?

Both the links DarrensCamaro gave have great pic on them and you can see it in and out of the car. This box is the simplest sub box and you can build it cheap for like $50. Just read the pdf and you'll see.

I have not tried to tackle the door speaker project yet. I do plan on doing either that or building kick panels havent decided yet. It took me a solid weekend to build that box. Started on a friday afternoon and sunday night it was in my hatch. A lot of the time was waiting for the liquid nails to dry and for the felt to dry on the top of the box. But like I said my total cost was under $60!
