Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

I still have a few more things to fix on my car, but I am starting to think about the sound system.

It has the Bose system and I am not sure if I should try to fix it or just replace it. I am not sure how good it will even sound if I fix it.

If anyone that has a working Bose system from an 89 or older, could they let me know if they like it. I am not too concerned with re-sale value. I am sure if I pulled the Bose out, it could be put back in. I am thinking about putting 6X9 in the rear hatch so there would be a little bit of cutting.

If I replace the Bose, I would want to put 4X6 in the dash, 6X9 in the very rear and 8" shallow subs in the sails.

Here is what I was thinking about:

Pioneer DEHP77DHR
GM/Chrysler Fit CD Receiver with EEQT

Pioneer GM-5300T
760W 2-Channel Bridgeable Amplifier

Pioneer TS-D691R
6"x9" 2-Way 350W Car Speakers

Pioneer Premier TS-SW841D
8" 500W 4-Ohm Shallow Mount Subwoofer

Pioneer TSP462
4"x6" 2-Way 150W Car Speakers

I guess I am just looking for a push one way or the other. It is not like I am going out and doing this anytime soon. I have a few other things I want to take care of first.

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

why would you get a shallow mounting 8"? where exactly are you putting your box?

I like how you went with all one brand smart move

Don't look at the MAX power rating btw that is garbage
your amp is 250-380 watts
your subs are 120 watts
6x9 80 watts
4x6 50 watts

You might want to just get 10" subs and a Mono amp and if you wanna amp those speakers with that 2 ch amp that system would sound awesome. It would be a lot more work and a few more bucks but it would sound great. (also adding cost for Big 3, Big Alt, Big Battery)

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

I want to put the subs in the pillar behind the door, where non-bose has the 6X9's.

That is why I want to use the shallow subs and I would use some sort of sound mat behind it.

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

I have the bose system in my car it has much to be deired when comparing it to a well set up aftermarket system. I am currently researching what speakers im going to replace mine with. So i would definitly recommend ditching the bose.

ahh ok that makes sense then. Are you going to mount the 6x9 for kick panels or where are you going to put your rear speakers? In the front would be overkill and probably sound terrible.

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

One thing I would recomment to you is make custom kick panels for the front and add a 6 and 1/2 component speakers. I have polk and I love it. I would definately recomment going bigger than 8 inch subs. The sound frequency that comes from those is pretty weak. If you are looking for the thump, maybe even one 12. That is the beauty of a hatch back, it will sound good with almost anything you go with. I'm not a fan of pioneer amps! I installed them for years and had issues with being reliable.

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

In my old bose equipped car I ripped out the bose head unit and put in a later model chevy ac delco unit. It was a little big, but I liked the look of it in there.

Then I replaced the bose kick-panels and speakers with a 6.5" component set in q-logic enclosures, stuffed a set of 6x9's in the sail panels, mounted on a piece of plywood, and put two kicker 6.5" subs in the rear bose speaker compartment(I had to remove the plastic surrounding the woofers, but after that they dropped right in). Had a 4channel kicker amp driving the components/6x9's and and a mono alpine amp driving the two subs(4 ohm subs wired in parallel for a 2-ohm load) again mounted on plywood, in the sparetire well.

I'm no audiophile but I must say that the car sounded pretty damn good, and that was with the newer, but still OEM headunit. Also you'd be surprised how deep and loud those 6.5" subs were in that bose enclosure.

Just wanted to share a perspective of what I did with mine. I liked it because there wasn't any real difference appearance wise except for the deck and still sounded great, plus I't ended up being really cheap - I think I spent about $500 in total for the 6 speakers, but I had the amps from a previous system

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

I have bose in my car. I'm keeping it in so my car stays original. I have put in a sub amp and sub with a line level converter and also installed a fm mod 6 disc cd changer so I can listen to my cds. Not the best sound but the sub makes it better. Doesnt compare to an aftermarket system.

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

If your putting subs in don't bother with 6 by 9's buy a good 6.5" component set You'll need more mids

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

The more I read about this, the more I can see why it would be best to put subs in the rear and then something in the pillars. I am 100% sure I do not want 6X9's in there, but trying to put subs there might be a joke.

I think a couple of good subs in the very back, some sort of component set up in the pillars and high quality 4X6's up front. I have thought about kick panels speakers and door speakers, but think I can get what I want without them.

I am still a little away before even starting this, I have to repair the butcher job that was done in the back area.

Until then I will just keep reading and listening to my broken bose system.

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

Ditch the Bose, never heard a good sounding Bose system. Go with a good sub in the back. then good door or kick panel speakers.

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

I don't know what the camaros come with, but I do recommend not going with bose. Bose is a good seller for when buying a car from the dealer but it doesn't really compare to much aftermarket stereos out there. I wouldn't go with 6x9s simply because oval cones mishape and distort vs. a round speaker. go round speakers all the way. Try plate speakers - 4'' speaker with separate tweeter instead of 4x6's or just go with 5.25''s for the fronts if they fit. If you are running off a headunit and no amp look into polk db, alpine type s, eclipse. There are other brand out there but those are few of the speakers that sound good with little power (most sensitive and good sounding). Also don't get 3 or 4 way speakers, they will sound too unatural. hope this helps

Re: Fix Bose Stereo or Replace Everything

I saw this topic, and couldn't resist. I see that everyone who has responded basically reiterates my 2 cents however. I have often wondered WHY GM decided to use BOSE in ANYTHING. THey sound good for the first couple years, but after that, it needs replacing.

Amplifiers at every speaker in Cadillacs? Why? It generally wasnt any louder, and I can't say that I noticed any more definition than a standard DELCO system. In my few years (yeah right) as a car audio guru, I have always looked at BOSE as a backing out point when considering a car. Same goes for Infinity, but Infinity didnt use as many incompatible enclosures as Delco/Bose.

Youre doing the right thing by replacing all of it. You don't have to stick with ONE name brand though. I always liked Memphis M-class components, and think their new S-Class is something awesome! Check them out here: http://memphiscaraudio.com/subs.html#sclass_subs

My old co-worker was installing a set of TENS in ford ranger truck boxes built for EIGHTS!!! Had to gently notch the back panel for magnet clearance, but that was because the box was built for EIGHTS, and was EXTREMELY SHALLOW!

The amplification is alright, but I would recommend something with four channels, and possibly a sub output. Shop around. You can possibly SAVE money by buying items that are not all of the same brand. That is what the competition game is all about. Selling YOUR product at a lower price then the other guy. I built an all kicker system in a CRX once and this made me realize that staying all same brand can be costly!!!

I just wanted to offer insight, without trying to disagree with anyone else. Hope this is helpful.
